To knock on neighbours door and ask for dinner?

(Light hearted!)

I'm so hungry, really tired, kids and dp are out, no idea what I'm eating and whatever it is they are cooking smells absolutely blooming fantastic. The smell is wafting through all the windows... It's tangy and savoury and has some kind of wonderful spice hanging around the edges.

AIBU if I pop round with a plate and ask them to fill it with whatever they're having...or should I settle for a fish finger sandwich?

Our local post office has closed now but i went in one day to send a parcel and commented how amazing the cooking smell was and joked it was making me hungry
"Just a minute" she said and reappeared with containers of food for me
After that, every time I went in she would send me away with a bit of whatever food there was

All joking aside they are a very traditional hard working Pakistani family. The recipe has probably been passed down generations and possobly never written down! If I went round they'd insist on me joining them, be offend if I didn't and feed me even if they had to have less themselves

I once went round to borrow an ax and they happened to be eating lunch.. an amazing byrani. They're brilliant neighbours but sadly tonight at least I reckon I will have to settle for the glorious wafts of cooking through my window

Omg I was about to say I often have this thought about our Pakistani neighbors, the smells coming from their house, delish!

The lady of the house actually did this for our whole street over Eid I think, I was soooo happy

Go round in search of a 'missing parcel' and then make the comment to see if it works.!

😂

I'm so jealous of all you lucky people getting all that delicious food. 😐

When I worked in A&E as a newly graduated nurse, the Mom of one of our doctors used bring in a few trays of freshly cooked onion bhajis and samosas at midnight. I asked her for the recipe and she invited me to dinner on my day off. Her son and I are now happily married with 2 teenagers😀

Oh that’s such a lovely story!

This is such a lovely thread. These are the stories the papers should be printing rather than going on about the bloody culture wars.

@ScottBakula just ignore they're trying to get a rise. Weird.

@IncognitoMam I'm not trying to get a rise. I'm just wondering what cooking smells you find so remarkable from next door that you would comment on them for good or ill?

It's not like anyone ever says: "I love the smell of boiling cabbage wafting in. It's great when the lady next door gives me a portion of soggy grey leaves in the manner of her Irish heritage" - that would be my mum, by the way.

Or perhaps you yearn for that? I do, and spuds and carrots. But I wouldn't force it on my neighbours.

People cook what they cook. They are just normal food smells, aren't they? Normally it's between 5pm and 8pm. No need to wet yourself over it. That would be weird, wouldn't it? Like you were othering or exoticising people for their perfectly normal diet - boiled cabbage or whatever - which was completely normal for them.

I'm sure you'd never do that.

OMG... they must have read this thread. Doorbell went about 15 minutes ago and their oldest son was there with a couple of plastic containers saying they'd got lots of curry and roti over tonight and would I like some.. and his mum was just on the way with rice and halwa (an amazing carrot based pudding for those that have never had it)

It's amazing, I'm so happy.. and it tastes even better than it smells..

Fish fingers back in freezer Grin

I had Carrot Halwa made for me over 30 years ago, it's the best dessert I've ever had in my life. I've tried multiple times to recreate it but always failed miserably, you are soooo lucky, I am quite jealous .. I hope you enjoy it

What a lovely thread!

In our house we always cook enough, in case someone passes by (they very rarely do, but🤷🏾‍♂️), so this makes me smile 😊

It could be arranged...but I'm vegetarian...

limitedperiodonly · 09/06/2023 00:30

I loved my mum's boiled bacon, carrots and potatoes. The salty gravy was almost transparent with shimmering golden rings of fat on it. Perfection I can never replicate.

CJsGoldfish · 09/06/2023 00:31

Love this ❤️

Anyone else furiously googling carrot halwa recipes? No, just me 🤣

Hadn't heard of it before but I desperately want some. Anyone with a tried and true recipe?

Ha! Had I seen your post when you started it, I would have been in the middle of eating my fish finger sandwiches and they were epic, highly recommended! Lots of butter, salt and pepper.

Ha, this thread brings back loads of memories, however my Pakistani family were on the other side of this and always send round plates of food to our Scottish / Turkish/ Jamaican etc neighbours.

my mum is always offering to cook for my friends (and work!) it used to embarrass me (as everything does when your a teenager) but as an adult I realise now just how much (most) people like to be fed.

i have moved out but my mum’s neighbours are are Turkish and mum will always cook for the youngest son when his mum is away for a few weeks. She once told us that her older son had eaten the plate of Biryani mum
had sent and the youngest had gotten so mad and ended up having an argument.

food has such a great way of bringing people together

Plenty of vegetarian options so pop round 😊

Daffodilsandtuplips · 09/06/2023 08:11

My husbands aunt lives next door to an Asian family, she’s a widow and her only child died four years ago, they took plates of food to her and at the house before funeral they offered free taxi rides to any mourners without transport to the cemetery and to the venue afterwards. They still keep an eye on her.

@limitedperiodonly

what the actual hell are you on about??

my neighbour who is as white British as I am, was born or acquired cooking skills/enthusiasm & energy for it, that I simply didn't.

There are always Devine smells wafting into my house. She was doing something with a lot of garlic the other night, no idea what as I couldn't identify the other smells/ingredients, but mmmmmmmm. She cooks Chinese & Indian food as well as Italian & traditional British food.

unfortunately (for me) I'm vegetarian & they're heavy meat eaters. I'd probably be on their doorstep with my bowl every night if not!!

sometimes, when she's in the mood for making something like mango chutney she'll mention it & I'll buy mangos & I'm always keeping my jars for her & she'll give me a couple if hard in return.

i find your post really really odd.
