To knock on neighbours door and ask for dinner?

(Light hearted!)

I'm so hungry, really tired, kids and dp are out, no idea what I'm eating and whatever it is they are cooking smells absolutely blooming fantastic. The smell is wafting through all the windows... It's tangy and savoury and has some kind of wonderful spice hanging around the edges.

AIBU if I pop round with a plate and ask them to fill it with whatever they're having...or should I settle for a fish finger sandwich?

Go and knock! I often get asked what I’m cooking, and I always always have enough to give and am so happy to put it into some cute tupperware. Good cooks love that! Let us know how it goes x

This thread is very sweet! Don’t let anybody tell you multiculturalism isn’t a wonderful thing 💕🌎

Absolutely.

Humans are just humans and can live alongside each other harmoniously

If you knock on your neighbour's door and they don't answer it then you'll know that they are Mumsnetters.

You must have read that thread about the mnetter who was pissed off her mil came unannounced with gifts for the kids from her holidays!

Mammamia2023 · 08/06/2023 20:42

@listsandbudgets if your planning to move anytime soon give me a shout. What a lovely thing for them to do, so kind and glad to hear there are good people around. I hope you enjoyed it!

Something in my eye. What a lovely story.

@JenniferBarkley I think it's all the onions that are been cut up , it's getting me to

limitedperiodonly · 08/06/2023 20:45

People wanging on about people bringing "exotic" food into hospitals disgusts me.

You can do whatever you like, but the basic food should be there and is a major part of your treatment. If the food is not adequate, then you or your loved ones should complain

They should not have to bring it in, but if they want to, that is up to them.

I was in the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, East London for six weeks. The food was great. Because many of the people are Muslim and some of them are Jewish, the food was halal or kosher - it's kind of the same. There were also vegetarian and vegan options.

There was a Caribbean option.

Do any of you know that?

londonrach · 08/06/2023 20:49

I have a similar problem..next door but one...the cooking smells...I'm sooo hungry smelling the food...spicy and onions....my next door neighbour and I stand outside with noses like the bistro kids ...I think they shy as we said how amazing the smells are.....if you going to cook something that smells that amazing you need to share it with neighbours ..it should be law!!!

limitedperiodonly · 08/06/2023 20:51

I don't like cooking smells.

limitedperiodonly · 08/06/2023 20:54

Boozysoozy1 · 08/06/2023 20:55

Batalax · 08/06/2023 20:59

They must have recognised the axe part of the story.

FreyaBentos · 08/06/2023 21:02

What a joyful happy thread, no sniping or sly comments, and so many lovely comments about the different cultures mixing together! 🌼

IncognitoMam · 08/06/2023 21:07

I used to visit a Pakistani family with work (social care) and always got fed. Food was amazing. DM had very little English but we always managed to chat. Other staff who visited refused their food and weren't very nice about them tbh. I don't have anything to do with those ex staff, the stuck up twunts.

Love this thread 😍

PrancerandDancer · 08/06/2023 21:07

I walk past student accommodation with a high proportion of Chinese students on my way home from work and the smells 🤯🤯🤯

Never in the mood for my boring dish I'd planned when I take that route 😂

My MIL said the other day that she went to an event at a local tourist attraction and stopped for a cup of tea next to a large Asian family who were having a picnic for someone's birthday... Before she knew it she was part of the picnic too and reports the food was delicious...she only thing she could offer in return was a slightly bashed banana 🤦

ScottBakula · 08/06/2023 21:10

@limitedperiodonly

Why would your neighbours not be just your neighbours? What is remarkable about having a barbecue at the weekend?

It's about as wanky as people saying: "It's Eid and my neighbour's food smells amazing."

Everybody on here is talking about food they have been given or given to people from different backgrounds/ cultures there is nothing wanky about it

IncognitoMam · 08/06/2023 21:12

@ScottBakula just ignore they're trying to get a rise. Weird.

When I worked in A&E as a newly graduated nurse, the Mom of one of our doctors used bring in a few trays of freshly cooked onion bhajis and samosas at midnight. I asked her for the recipe and she invited me to dinner on my day off. Her son and I are now happily married with 2 teenagers😀

This is the loveliest thing I've read on here!

Ladysaurus · 08/06/2023 21:13

You should definitely ask for the recipe.

Where I used to have a lovely Pakistani family, moved in 2 doors down. Just before a big religious celebration. But they were their first generation so didn't know anyone yet so they invited us. Left with enough delicious food to feed us for the week (they wouldn't accept no or a contribution towards it) and some brilliant new friends.

OfficerPastiche · 08/06/2023 18:34

Go for it!
I'm of South Asian descent and often cook delicious food. I'd be chuffed if someone asked. Beats them complaining that it stinks.

can i live with you.i'll pay

porridgeisbae · 08/06/2023 21:14

lol. You could ask them what it is so you can make it sometime.

There was a Mumsnetter who did this and it turned out that her neighbour was actually boiling her husband's overalls.

This is one of the best things I have ever read on here.

RicherThanYews · 08/06/2023 21:32

Can believe I'm admitting this but ... Good friends with our fabulous NDN and we were chatting in the garden about what's for dinner, I said "Yours smells gourmet, what IS that" and she said oh its just a BBC Good Food korma recipe, hold on a sec..." and she returned with a bowl full. Which I ran into my kitchen to inhale and may have mopped the sauce with white bread 🙈 if no bread was available I would have licked the bloody bowl. If your neighbours are awesome with an appreciation for weirdos you should ask for some 😁

exLtEveDallas · 08/06/2023 21:35

Years ago, when I was still in the Army, I was living in a partly bombed out hotel in Bosnia. All the females lived together in a couple of rooms at the end of a corridor that was designated for international officers. We couldn’t really speak to them (due to rank and language difficulties) but managed to get on pretty well.

It didn’t take long to realise that most of them were (illegally) cooking in their rooms because the smells were amazing! At least once a week we’d get a knock at the door and there would be a bloke with a pot of something that we’d all dig in to. I remember Malaysian, Ghurka, Turkish and Pakistani, and there was probably more. The Dutch, Americans and Germans used to use the cookhouse with us, but I also remember one Spanish bloke with a massive paella pan in the middle of the carpark!

Honestly, considering we were ‘at war’ it was more like an international Masterchef back in camp.
