To knock on neighbours door and ask for dinner?

(Light hearted!)

I'm so hungry, really tired, kids and dp are out, no idea what I'm eating and whatever it is they are cooking smells absolutely blooming fantastic. The smell is wafting through all the windows... It's tangy and savoury and has some kind of wonderful spice hanging around the edges.

AIBU if I pop round with a plate and ask them to fill it with whatever they're having...or should I settle for a fish finger sandwich?

When I worked in A&E as a newly graduated nurse, the Mom of one of our doctors used bring in a few trays of freshly cooked onion bhajis and samosas at midnight. I asked her for the recipe and she invited me to dinner on my day off. Her son and I are now happily married with 2 teenagers😀

Omg I love this even more!! The power of good food x

What a lovely thread. I remember reading an interview with Ainsley Harriott, asked about his interest in food from a young age, he replied, 'we lived in Brixton and our neighbours came from everywhere and so did their food'. I thought that was a proper London childhood. Recalling mine, our neighbours were Greek Cypriot, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Irish, Welsh, Caribbean, Indian, Spanish and many refugees from Hitler's Germany. All with a diverse range of foods to try.

We have Asian neighbours directly behind us and there’s many weekend days where DH and I are drooling over the smells wafting over the fence. Not long after our Pakistani neighbours at the front moved in they had a big family celebration and dropped big platters of leftovers with us and a couple of other neighbours. It’s been 10 years and we still talk about the gorgeous food!

I think this is one of the nicest threads I’ve read for a long time 😊

Couldn’t agree more. Like chicken soup for my soul 😊💫

It's about as wanky as people saying: "It's Eid and my neighbour's food smells amazing."

LadyKenya · 08/06/2023 20:09

Years ago we lived next door to a Turkish family. They were really nice neighbours, and would regularly have a barbecue at the weekend. They would always hand a plate over the fence, or send one round. The food that they gave us was absolutely lovely.

Omg when I was on the postnatal ward there was a woman opposite me whose entire family turned up with several bags of bento boxes full of hot steaming delicious smelling food. I got out of bed, pulled my curtains closed and had a quiet cry

The woman in the bed opposite me with dc1 had family who did similar. Only her mum went around every bed asking if anyone wanted any. It was absolutely delicious. The day she was discharged, dc1 was in Nicu and I ended up missing meals. I came back to bed to find they'd left a note and food wrapped up in foil on my night stand because it was so important that new mums kept their strength up. Their kindness made such an impact on what was an awful time in my life.

Omg I’m crying now. Had anyone shouted “CLASSICS”????

This is such a lovely, wholesome thread. Exactly what I needed to read after the news today. OP, I've already had my dinner, but you're making me hungry

OMG... they must have read this thread. Doorbell went about 15 minutes ago and their oldest son was there with a couple of plastic containers saying they'd got lots of curry and roti over tonight and would I like some.. and his mum was just on the way with rice and halwa (an amazing carrot based pudding for those that have never had it)

It's amazing, I'm so happy.. and it tastes even better than it smells..

Yaaay! What lovely neighbours, enjoy your meal

Thegoodbadandugly · 08/06/2023 20:15

When my children were at primary school we went on a picnic with class and this lady made the nicest spicy rice dish Id ever tasted. She gave me the recipe but I never ended up making it.

Awww, what a lovely story! Goes a long way to restoring my faith in human kindness AND romance.
I hope you remain happy together for many years to come ❤

Why would your neighbours not be just your neighbours? What is remarkable about having a barbecue at the weekend?

listsandbudgets · 08/06/2023 20:20

@limitedperiodonly It will likely be the spices they use to flavour the meat - I very much doubt it was your average sausage and burger they were cooking but more likely home made kebabs

I pitied anyone who ever lived near my ils. All they would have ever smelled was mil's burnt offerings. Fil was so often ill with food poisoning! Unless she was trying to kill him off!

They were lovely people. hth. Not sure of the point you are trying to make tbh.

Iheartmysmart · 08/06/2023 20:20

I lived in Cyprus for a while as a child and still remember our landlady cooking a huge feast every Sunday and inviting us and her other tenants to join them. Kleftiko, stifado, Greek salad and fabulous roast potatoes! It was fab.

More recently DS was friends with a lovely Muslim boy at primary school. Poor lad had an accident and couldn’t go to school for a few weeks. DS took him round some homework and also some little gifts to cheer him up. A couple of days later the mum came round with a huge container of the most amazing food. We’re still friends now despite the boys losing touch when they went off to different secondary schools.

HomeB · 08/06/2023 20:22

Asking your neighbour for food and being offered it is lovely. Taking hot food that smells of anything into hospital is not.

My SIL was desperate to leave her maternity ward because of it, it really upset her to be forced into someone else's meal. I'm the same, so sensitive to strong smells.

If someone started a thread saying a person on my train is eating an egg mayo or tuna sandwich or garlic bread or very ripe banana, there would be outrage. By all means, ask your neighbours but please don't take it into a hospital

caringcarer · 08/06/2023 20:23

I tutored a boy from a Pakistan family and his Mum was always offering me food to take home. I don't like spicy food but DH used to love it.

One of my son's best friends has a fiance who is Thai. She is an amazing cook and I think my son finds reasons to call by, when he knows she is cooking a new recipe. His friend text him to tell him. 😂

Can a thread restore your faith in humanity? Yes, yes it can 😁

Totally agree.

It's so heartwarming to see that sense of community does still exist whoever you are and wherever you are despite what you read and hear daily. 🥰

When I was single my DS asked our neighbour from Bangladesh if he fancied marrying his mum because his house smelt "well better than ours", it was all the wonderful cooking smells from his mum. He didn't want to marry me (the cheek!) but he was very kind to me, and I had years of his little mum being my friend. She barely spoke English but we'd always manage to have a lovely chat and brew.
I missed her loads when I moved!
