(Light hearted!)

I'm so hungry, really tired, kids and dp are out, no idea what I'm eating and whatever it is they are cooking smells absolutely blooming fantastic. The smell is wafting through all the windows... It's tangy and savoury and has some kind of wonderful spice hanging around the edges.

AIBU if I pop round with a plate and ask them to fill it with whatever they're having...or should I settle for a fish finger sandwich?

RicherThanYews, the OP's neighbours have already given her food, if you read her latest post.

a1poshpaws · 08/06/2023 21:35

@caun that's one of the happiest posts I've ever read on Mumsnet!

LadyJ2023 · 08/06/2023 21:40

Oh man I hate that.the other morning went to hang washing out and all I could smell was a lush cooked breakfast drifting from next door I felt exactly the same 🤣

Love this thread. Not quite the same as its drink rather than food, but it is reminding me of a fond memory from my youth, of being on a train in Italy, in a small carriage, those ones that just sat 6 or so people.

The carriage filled up with several Italian women, who I don't think knew each other initially. As the train set off, one woman produced a flask of espresso and lots of tiny plastic cups, which she proceeded to share with everyone in our carriage, including me. I spoke very little Italian, none of them spoke much English, and we had the BEST journey, drinking several espressos and getting to know each through hand signals, broken Italian and English.

I'm Turkish and every time we do a bbq we send out a plate to our neighbours and we have a great relationship. There's a saying in Turkish where "those that can smell should join". I love this thread and it makes me so happy to be living in a multicultural country and one thing that brings everyone together is of course delicious food 😋

I think this is one of the nicest threads I’ve read for a long time 😊

I'm sure someone will be along soon to spoil that pleasant feeling!

Heartsnrainbows · 08/06/2023 21:57

My partner lives next door to a Pakistani lady in a HMO and quite often comes home to find a bag with a tupperware of food hanging on his door handle after he complimented the smell of her cooking one night. He's no idea what half of it is she speaks very little English but it's always scrumptious.

She feeds half the house I think, that woman is one hell of a cook. They're all forever putting fivers under her door towards ingredients. 😆

This is such a lovely thread. These are the stories the papers should be printing rather than going on about the bloody culture wars.

Sadly they work on the principle 'Good news is no news'.

You are right shared food really does bring people together, and this is a lovely thread shows the best in people which we don't promote enough.

SheilaWilde · 08/06/2023 22:04

What a lovely thread. My beans on toast will feel sadly lacking.

OMG... they must have read this thread. Doorbell went about 15 minutes ago and their oldest son was there with a couple of plastic containers saying they'd got lots of curry and roti over tonight and would I like some.. and his mum was just on the way with rice and halwa (an amazing carrot based pudding for those that have never had it)

It's amazing, I'm so happy.. and it tastes even better than it smells..

Fish fingers back in freezer Grin

They haven't read the thread. They are Pakistani!

My husband is Pakistani. They tend to be very hospitable and love to share food with their neighbours.

If you happen to be in East London, drop me a message and I'll send you some curry or halwa next time you crave it!!

All joking aside they are a very traditional hard working Pakistani family. The recipe has probably been passed down generations and possobly never written down! If I went round they'd insist on me joining them, be offend if I didn't and feed me even if they had to have less themselves

I once went round to borrow an ax and they happened to be eating lunch.. an amazing byrani. They're brilliant neighbours but sadly tonight at least I reckon I will have to settle for the glorious wafts of cooking through my window

My parents live in a predominantly Pakistani area, if this family are anything like their neighbours they'd feed you in a heartbeat and not consider it unusual.

Perhaps you could pop round under the guise of giving them a plant cutting or a book you thought they'd like...they'd perhaps offer you a plate in return 😆

DrHousecuredme · 08/06/2023 22:10

Doh late to the party and just read your update, I love it!!
Enjoy your food.

Our neighbour asked us not to use the extractor fan when cooking bacon, she was trying to wean her husband of it!

One day there will be an app like Shazam only that you hold your phone up to catch the smell and then it will give you the recipe or better still a plate of it.

They should have that for perfume too.

When I worked in A&E as a newly graduated nurse, the Mom of one of our doctors used bring in a few trays of freshly cooked onion bhajis and samosas at midnight. I asked her for the recipe and she invited me to dinner on my day off. Her son and I are now happily married with 2 teenagers😀

What a lovely story!!! 😍😍

I agree!

Magnoliainbloom · 08/06/2023 22:27

This has warmed my heart. It reminds me of the feeling I had reading the Little Korean Lady classic thread. I have the most wonderful a Pakistani colleague. He and his wife wake at 4 am every few week to cook the team lunch. He’s one of the kindest and most generous people. Reading this thread has made realise how isolated I am despite living in C London.

Wishing you and your neighbours many years of happy times and good food.

Sunny388 · 08/06/2023 22:29

I am a British Pakistani and reading this thread has made me happy. 😀

THIS is why Mumsnet is brilliant ❤️ What truly heart wracking stories.

Dying laughing at boiling overalls!! 😂

I once lived in a flat next to an Indian family and the smell of curry every night used to make me SO hungry. It wasn’t the horrible chip shop smell either it was always aromatic and fresh smelling.
