To knock on neighbours door and ask for dinner?

(Light hearted!)

I'm so hungry, really tired, kids and dp are out, no idea what I'm eating and whatever it is they are cooking smells absolutely blooming fantastic. The smell is wafting through all the windows... It's tangy and savoury and has some kind of wonderful spice hanging around the edges.

AIBU if I pop round with a plate and ask them to fill it with whatever they're having...or should I settle for a fish finger sandwich?

My mum feeds our next door neighbour all the time. She always cooks loads. It's always nice when someone compliments your cooking and I'll happily drop off samosas for next door but I wouldn't have extra curry to give out unless it was a party or eid where I'd have made loads.

What a lovely thread!

In our house we always cook enough, in case someone passes by (they very rarely do, but🤷🏾‍♂️), so this makes me smile 😊

I'm more interested in why you needed to borrow an axe!

ArseMenagerie · 08/06/2023 19:15

I live next door to a Gurkha family and OMG their dinner smells incred every night

JaninaDuszejko · 08/06/2023 19:16

I am now planning to comment loudly next time I can smell my neighbour's cooking in the hope I get offered some 😁.

DisforDarkChocolate · 08/06/2023 19:16

My hubby is cooking curry downstairs for our son, it smells bloody amazing and I want a plate too. I have had my tea but I'm hoping for leftovers for lunch tomorrow toast in a flatbread.

FredaFox · 08/06/2023 19:17

Years ago my dads neighbours had a bbq and it smelt lovely
My dad put a slice of bread on the end of his fishing Rod and sent it over to them

They sent burgers back over the fence 😂

MudandParsnips · 08/06/2023 19:17

Such a lovely thread! I'm now also SO hungry, and crying with laughter at the boiling overalls 🤣

Our new neighbours are Asian and they pass pakoras over the fence to us sometimes when we’re working on our house. We had friends round for my birthday a while ago and they passed over a plate, I said thank you - it’s my birthday so if we’re loud and annoying just say…they came back with a second plate of pakoras and a box of roses for me! They also gave us lovely gifts when we moved in, I don’t know how to repay their generosity and kindness but it’s meant loads to me as we’ve been having a pretty tough time recently.

Sugarcube84 · 08/06/2023 19:18

I’ve sent round a Sunday dinner for my neighbours who either live alone or on one occasion whose wife was too hot too cook 🤣

I always cook too much and it’s nice to help out and get some compliments

Omg when I was on the postnatal ward there was a woman opposite me whose entire family turned up with several bags of bento boxes full of hot steaming delicious smelling food. I got out of bed, pulled my curtains closed and had a quiet cry 😂 I did have food but was waiting for dh to arrive to bring me home - he walked in, opened the curtains and exclaimed ‘Cor, did you smell that? Smells amazing!’ 🤣
go and knock!! They’ll invite you in or at least offer you a plate - our neighbour recently called over the fence that our dinner smelled good (bbq stuff) and we sent him over a plate of food.

Along with a famous mn chicken boiled overalls would feed a family of 5 for a week....

Ginandrosemary · 08/06/2023 19:21

Lovely thread.

CurlewKate · 08/06/2023 19:21

I'm half Irish half Italian and I'd feed you!

It's probably a Madhur Jaffery recipe...

Glittertwins · 08/06/2023 19:22

We had a coffee morning at primary school and someone brought in the most amazing pakora and bhaji. I said how good they were, no idea who'd made them but the following week I found out as I was given a box of them 🙂

MissAmbrosia · 08/06/2023 19:22

We lived next door to a Hungarian family for a couple of years. They had friends round and were cooking goulash in the garden over an open fire. Not sure if they heard us talking about the delicious smells or felt guilty about the smoke but they sent round a big bowl later that evening. It was gorgeous. I sent them a bread and butter pudding as way as a thank you. They were polite about it. 😁

When I worked in A&E as a newly graduated nurse, the Mom of one of our doctors used bring in a few trays of freshly cooked onion bhajis and samosas at midnight. I asked her for the recipe and she invited me to dinner on my day off. Her son and I are now happily married with 2 teenagers😀

Oh my god what an amazing story <3

mommatoone · 08/06/2023 19:23

My neighbour has a thai girlfriend who visits a few times a year. And my goodness, the smell from her cooking is amazing!!. Im going round next time she visits, doing my neighbourly duties in the hope she offers some of her lovely food!!

ElizabethBest · 08/06/2023 19:24

Our neighbour does this anytime I make an curry and I always dish him up a plate. He always takes in parcels for us, and waters our plants so it’s a fair deal!

Therealjudgejudy · 08/06/2023 19:24

What a great thread!

ElizabethBest · 08/06/2023 19:25

@caun I wonder if I work with your husband?! We have a consultant whose mum often sends in samosas and they’re AMAZING. She also sends them to my 6 year old as they’re his favourite thing.

Awwww😊

What a lovely cheery thread!!
Tell her the food smells amazing!

I've just popped my lovely retired late 60s neighbour the last 2 editions on my table of Woman &Home as hate throwing magazines away if someone else would enjoy them.

I've had houses where neighbours weren't remotely neighbourly so it's a pleasure to have one who is.

My df's neighbour was from Syria and used to send him a plate every other day as she knew he was elderly and lived alone. My God, it was the best food I've ever tasted. When he passed away I gave her all his garden furniture and a greenhouse as she loved her garden but didn't have the money for furniture. She invited me and the kids for dinner and we left with a bag full of leftovers, sweets, tea, herbs, and a copper mug. She was awesome 😊

That is such a lovely story. Flowers

My paternal grandparents were Jamaican. Their direct neighbours were English on one side and Irish on another. I remember that we would get a knock on the door, someone would complement the cooking, and they'd usually get some food. Usually the stews, like brown chicken, curry goat or my grandad's spare ribs. They loved the compliments and usually cooked larger batches anyway our family was plenty enough to finish it. Maybe you should start hinting OP, you'd make someone feel good and might get some one day. From experience, people love to share.

I remember a Somali neighbour sharing some of her lamb with me for Eid, omg it was so good!
