To think latent Islamaphobia is as prevalent as ever

Lesschubtolove · 06/06/2023 12:33

This is based from several posts I’ve now seen in MN, about burquinis, wearing the hijab, in fact anything vaguely Muslim related on MN and in print media as well as the real world.

Most comments from posters on MN are fairly neutral but there are a fair number that then state some pretty (pulls yikes face) comments, especially about women’s clothing or integration. There also seem to be a lot of misconceptions about what Muslims actually believe.

It seems to me as though yes most people won’t come out and say that they dislike Muslims or think they are stupid, backwards, oppressed (insert adjective here) but the disdain comes out in more subtle ways.

im genuinely quite surprised at the misconceptions I read on MN, but I guess they must apply to real life too, but just that people don’t wish to voice them.

ps I am a Muslim myself. I did an ama a while back

You said in a previous post that men are the head of the household.

And yeah the gender pay gap mean that women earn less generally. But according to you women shouldn't be expected to contribute to household finances even if they earn more than their male partner. And if the gender pay gap is a justification, then why do daughers inherit half as much as sons even if they have no intention of ever marrying a man? Surely they should inherit more, if the whole point is to address the gender pay gap.

Also, you said it's this way because men and women are different. The pay gap is not a way that they are inherently different, just a way in which they are treated diffrently.

I feel now as if you’re almost on purpose misconstruing what I’ve said.

I’ve said islamically speaking due the historical context we’ve discussed a lot, a Muslim man can marry a Jewish and Christian woman (it is disliked but they can) and that is because at revelation society had it that the man was the head of the household so the children would follow the father’s faith. I also said that there are contemporary scholars who now argue that those verses mean the children follow the religion of the dominant partner (which can be either a man or woman). You asked for the Islamic basis for men marrying outside the faith. I have given it.

i haven’t said the shares of inheritance are to mitigate the modern gender pay gap, rather that is a reason why men may support their partner financially.

ive also explained why those rules came about and how it was relevant in the historical context, and how it would’ve been practically unheard of for a woman to remain unmarried. I’ve also said how this to me and to more contemporary scholars is an example of something that is contextually bound, ie not relevant in the present day.

What’s your point? That sometimes Muslims do terrible things?

another few white terror attacks too, june 5th, June 6th along with a whole host of others

You need to grovel to @botanicalart for forgiveness and march the streets of London to denounce this sort of thing.

Complaining about some latent Islamaphobia while followers of Islam kill kids is ridiculous

Hopefully they will get better at weeding these psychopaths out. I think Islam is just an excuse sometimes for violent men to wield out punishments and their frustrations female extremists are much rarer. Then the concept of martyrdom helps them in their delusions , it's never radical preachers who kill though just the underlings.

I'm not minsconstruing anything, if anything you are.

You said that the reason women inherit less that men is because they rely on men, and that they rely on men because of the gender pay gap. But if the aim is to negate the gender paygap, why do women inherit less than men? What's the point in giving women more money than men by allowing them no not have to contribute to the hosuehold, but then effectively taking money from them by halfing their inheritance?

There is no reason whatsoever why in modern day Britain men and women should be treated financially differently.

Women inheriting less than men is sexist. Men being automaticlaly the head of the hosuehold is sexist. Unmarried women needing a male guardian is sexist. Men having a duty to contribute to the household when women don't is sexist. Men having more rights in who they marry than women is sexist. You're deluded if you think otherwise.

That makes no sense.

islamaphobia can’t exist because some Muslims are violent criminals?

can racism exist because some people of Colour are violent criminals?

both things can be true at the same time it doesn’t justify prejudice against that group

No you are.

I never said the aim of a 1400 year old edict is to negate the present day pay gap! You asked if there are any circumstances in the Present day UK where a man should provide for his partner. I gave you some.

you are purposely ignoring what I’ve said too… I said that in the 21st century, especially in the west those edicts don’t apply and should be viewed in the context of their milieu aka NOT TODAY

So you're saying that according to Islam sons and daughters should now inherent equally and have equal expectations to contribute to the household?

Really? Because I cannot see anywhere you have answered that question. You only seem to talk abot what was the case 1000 years ago, or what other religions say, or maybe how some obscure scholar might interpret it. You seem unable to give a straight answer.

Define a lot? There are over a billion Muslims world wide.

a lot of white people commit murder too, same with a lot of people of colour. A lot of white men are paedophiles.

let’s change the scenario. There are some black people in gangs and who therefore commit crimes, sometimes violent ones? Does that mean it’s ok have a fear of all black people? Or harbour prejudice to them?

of course it doesn’t. The actions of the few aren’t the responsibility of the masses.

A lot of white people are mass shooting terrorists so if people are wary of all white people its not an irrational fear.
It is a very real and rational fear and yes it is for all white people as no one can tell which one is going to shoot you and when

What the actual fuck - reported for Islamophobia

Scirocco · 08/06/2023 14:39

@botanicalart what's happened in France is horrific. We need to let the authorities investigate and find out what's gone on and why, so that the victims can have justice. Speculating about motives at this point is premature. Let's all just hope and pray that the victims survive and can recover.

AnorLondo · 08/06/2023 14:44

if you have time or the inclination, youtube Shabir ally and homosexuality, he is very nuanced and explains the Islamic stance far better than I can

You mean the video where he says gay people should "refrain from any sexual immorality"? Or the one where he says that allowing same-sex marriage leads to a slippery slope?

Right, so according to Islam these rules no longer apply, even though a lot of Muslims still follow them.
