Am I a Mooncup minger?

MooncupMinger · 03/06/2023 19:48

I use a Mooncup (actually a Boots copy one, but that’s beside the point). When I empty it, I pour the contents into the loo, then wash it out in the bathroom sink next to the toilet. Whenever I wash it out I think to myself that DP would probably find it gross that I’m washing it out where he washes his face/brushes his teeth etc. He could also walk in at any second, as we never lock the bathroom door, so there’s always the fear that I’m going to be outed as a Mooncup minger. Tbh he might think it’s a non-event.

I COULD turn the other way and wash it out in the bath, but that seems a bit overkill. Also… what do people do in their downstairs loos (which I don’t have)?!

So…

YABU - you’re a minger and should wash it out in the bath.

YANBU - it’s a normal bodily function (/fluid 😂) and it’s fine to wash it out in the sink.

I tend to hold mine in the loo and flush and wash it that way.
Sounds even worse than using sink now I think about it.

@Barleymilk

i understand your thinking, but I'd stop that if I was you, I wouldn't be reinserting that!

wipe with toilet paper if you're out, but rinse in the sink at home.

SumAndSubstance · 03/06/2023 22:02

I may have done the same, but I am definitely not admitting to it 😂

This is what puts me off using one. How do you wash it out when at work? Use the sinks and then have to go back into a stall?

I found I very rarely had to change it at work. And if i did there was a cubicle that had a sink in it or just wiped it out with loo paper. It’s brilliant for travelling. Best thing I started using really.

Considering DP shares bodily fluids with me on a semi regular basis, I don't think any epidemiologist is going to have concerns about him washing his face in the sink that's been cleaned as part of dealing with the menstrual cup, somehow.

My comment obviously wasn't about you and your partner's sexual practices specifically?! 😮‍💨🤯

This is literally a thread asking people's opinions on this matter and I think it's wise to be cautious when dealing with blood. Many people have viruses they don't know about and I said I'd need to do more research but this is what I'd do.

VaccineSticker · 03/06/2023 22:03

Depends if your family uses the sink as a little bowl to wash face with. If not it’s ok, if you do use the sink as a bowl then you know what you need to do from now on right?!

CovertImage · 03/06/2023 22:05

I bought the cheapest of cheap saucepans from the supermarket (£2.50 I think, although about 15 years ago). I painted women symbols on the outside with nailvarnish so it wouldn't get used for anything else, and keep it in a different place from my other saucepans.

This is insane. It's only blood and you're boiling the mooncup anyway!

YungDumbThrills · 03/06/2023 22:08

Sink! Easy while your still sat on the loo! Happy to be a mooncup minger 😂

Cherrysoup · 03/06/2023 22:09

It's fine to use the sink, all I would say is run lots of water after emptying it. I have a click clack plug with a plastic seal layer in the bathroom and my OH never thinks to lift it out to rinse after brushing his teeth so when I clean the sink, there's an icky residue of his spit between the plug and the plastic seal. 🤮

I use the single occupant unisex loos. The sinks are in the room with the loo.

pattyparsnip · 03/06/2023 20:20

Just pop it in the dishwasher

It’s not very practical to do this every time you empty your cup! On my heaviest days I empty it 2-3 times. Am I supposed to run the dishwasher each time? The quickest cycle is 30 mins. Do I just free bleed while I’m waiting? I don’t think you’ve thought this through…

Omfg. Why is the lid even up when you are flushing it @Barleymilk

And you're leaning into the pooticles and inhaling them. Jesus wept

Pooticles! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I live overseas and wash mine in the bidet - it's nice to have a use for it as I don't use it for anything else 🤣

@Tickstickseverywhere not even sandy feet? I grew up thinking that's what they were for!

Builtme · 03/06/2023 22:15

I accidentally left my tampon wrapped in toilet paper on the shelf directly in front of the toilet on Friday after I got into the bath with our 15 month old with croup at 10pm. DP put it in the toilet but left me to find on my morning wee with said LO at 5am on Saturday morning, couldn't fish it out, so bugger the pipes eh!? I've had 11 excruciating painful periods this year after not being allowed to go back into the contraception I used to use because of the weight I put on while pregnant. I'm not bitter at all, can you tell?! I think you're OK!

BadNomad · 03/06/2023 21:35

Of course! Dettol ocean fresh. After I give it a scrub with the toilet brush.

(Kidding! Tesco Luxury Soft flushable wipes. Only the very best for my mooncup.)

You may know this already but “flushable” wipes aren’t actually flushable…

Never cleaned my cup with a wet wipe. I don’t use them as they are horrible for the environment and it was concern for the environment and the wish to avoid disposable products that lead me to try a mooncup in the first place.

SlippySarah · 03/06/2023 22:17

I have one or two days a month when my mooncup needs emptying hourly. If I can't come up with an excuse to WFH I use the disabled toilet at work so I can deal with the constant rinsing and re-inserting. I know I don't have a disability but I don't feel anyone in my office would begrudge me that small bit of convenience.

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 03/06/2023 22:19

YouJustDoYou · 03/06/2023 21:10

That's why I could never get on with it, they chnaged our work toilets to unisex as well so it wasn't fun having to go to the sink with bloody hands etc.

If you are in the UK, that is illegal in most workplaces. Workplace toilets must be single-sex or single-occupant.

Mine got stuck and I had to ask DH to help me get it out 😣

So yeah, I never used it again.

That's what puts me off trying one

ladymaiasura · 03/06/2023 22:20

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 03/06/2023 20:18

How do people get them out without the blood spilling everywhere? Anyway, if you'd wash a cut finger in the sink, this is no different.

Just keep it upright. Takes a bit of practice to get the hang of insertion and removal but isn’t that hard. I remove mine while sitting on the toilet though so it doesn’t matter if it spills.

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 03/06/2023 22:24

LOL at all the women boiling their mooncups. Tampons aren't sterile. Your vibrator's not sterile. Your fingers aren't sterile. You DH's dick and DW or DH's fingers and mouth aren't sterile. Why does your mooncup need to be sterile? I wash mine with soap and water at the end of each cycle and (most importantly) use a pin to make sure that the holes are clear.

Yeah, I'm fine with my impact on the environment. I chose to try a mooncup because I have PCOS and endo and it lets me get through the night without having to wash my bedding every morning. Which I imagine is also bad for the environment.

Because all those other things get washed regularly, whereas your mooncup is going to sit and grow whatever for a month until you need it again.

I hope you don’t really wash your mooncup in the toilet? Did I misunderstand?

Climber567 · 03/06/2023 22:39

I think the sink is fine, that's what I do too. It gets cleaned regularly, and I'm sure there are grosser things going down there.

I'm on the brink of giving up on my Mooncup though, after about a year of trying with it. It just leaks constantly, especially at the start of my period when it's heaviest. It leaks well before it fills up to the holes, sometimes I literally feel it flooding when I shift position. I've tried all the folding, clenching, twisting, squeezing tips and nothing seems to work. I have both sizes after getting in touch with Mooncup and they sent me the other size to try (their customer service is great to be fair).

Any ideas anyone? I'm wondering if it's just too long for me and I'd be better off trying one of the shorter brands, but I'm loathe to spend more money if it's going to be the same!

Ugzbugz · 03/06/2023 22:45

The fact various people in a house spit in a sinkmto brush their teeth and people then fill it to wash is repulsive anyway.

HaveSomeIntrospect · 03/06/2023 22:45

mine came with a bag to dissinfect o. The microwave, so I do that at the end of my cycle before I store it and at the beginning of my cycle before I use it.
during my cycle I empty into the loo before rinsing I’m the sink before I pop it it in. No problems or mess. I use the disabled loo if I am out and have to empty it because it guarantees a sink to rinse it out.
Using it has meant I have realised I am losing a lot more blood during my cycle than is normal, I am now under the gynaecologist to investigate
