Am I a Mooncup minger?

MooncupMinger · 03/06/2023 19:48

I use a Mooncup (actually a Boots copy one, but that’s beside the point). When I empty it, I pour the contents into the loo, then wash it out in the bathroom sink next to the toilet. Whenever I wash it out I think to myself that DP would probably find it gross that I’m washing it out where he washes his face/brushes his teeth etc. He could also walk in at any second, as we never lock the bathroom door, so there’s always the fear that I’m going to be outed as a Mooncup minger. Tbh he might think it’s a non-event.

I COULD turn the other way and wash it out in the bath, but that seems a bit overkill. Also… what do people do in their downstairs loos (which I don’t have)?!

So…

YABU - you’re a minger and should wash it out in the bath.

YANBU - it’s a normal bodily function (/fluid 😂) and it’s fine to wash it out in the sink.

When I was at uni I found my housemate boiling hers in our saucepan. No idea why we weren't over the moon about it when it transpired she'd been doing it for months to sterilise it.
I think the sink is fine, I'd probably give the sink a quick spray and wipe after, but probably not necessary.

How do people get them out without the blood spilling everywhere? Anyway, if you'd wash a cut finger in the sink, this is no different.

You empty it before it's full. Anyway it can't ever fill right up. Mind has holes near the rim so it leaks before it's up to the rim.

red78hot · 03/06/2023 20:34

If you got blood on your hands whilst removing it or whilst inserting a tampon would you wash your hands in the bath? Probably not! So yanbu, I'd empty it in the sink 🤷‍♀️.
I've rinsed out a pee into cup thingy in the sink 😅

I am definitely not coordinated enough to hold a full cup of blood in one hand, try to get out a bottle in another, in a tiny cubicle without ending up looking like I've stayed a night at the hotel in The Shining. And I flood so I'd need to do it every half an hour/hour on my heavy days at work. I love the reusable idea of cups and have tried 4 brands now but just cannot get on with them at all.

But you wouldn’t hold a full cup of blood in one hand, you’d remove the mooncup, empty it in the toilet bowl and then rinse it with a bottle of water if you wanted, then reinsert. If you wanted you could then use the water in your bottle to rinse your hands before washing them properly in the sink.

I clean mine by boiling it in a saucepan. I also cook food in said saucepain. Obviously I wash it in-between uses.

Extra iron

Barleymilk · 03/06/2023 20:06

I tend to hold mine in the loo and flush and wash it that way.
Sounds even worse than using sink now I think about it.

Oh, Barleymilk 🤣🤣

I audibly gasped and nearly woke up DS.

But it's still dripping everywhere. I do find them very messy, fine if WFH (if I could get any brand to fit and yes I've done all the quizzes and watched all the videos about folds and tried for months on end but my body just refuses to go with it) but out at work in busy loos with my colleagues in the next stall I just couldn't do it. I'd need to take a change of clothes because I'd be bound to smear blood all over everything.

Just pop it in the dishwasher

It'll fit quite nicely with the dogs bowl & loo brush...

OldTinHat · 03/06/2023 20:43

The dishwasher is where it should be cleaned! *jokes!

From a medical perspective blood can contain virusus such as HIV and hepatitis. Without doing research into this I don't know the liklihood of catching it in different scrnarios or your medical history but mooncups have always made me question how this isn't thought about.

I would try to avoid pouring blood in a shared basin especially if someone might fill it to wash their face or shave there where you can get razor cuts.

I don't really get grossed out by periods in general but if someone I knew was doing that in a basin I used and didn't disinfect it in any way I'd feel like it was a bit anti social as it seems uneccessary and it's basically rinsing the lining of your womb off of equipment right where I'd be washing my face.

When people brush their teeth or wash their hands or face they usually have soap or toothpaste mixing with the dirt and it's not a lot of liquid.

I'd pour blood in the loo and wash it in a sink cleaning the actual thing so it doesn't harbour germs itself and disinfect everywhere with bleach if I had one.

Same and OH couldn't care less.

Runnersandtoms · 03/06/2023 20:47

Washing in sink is fine as is sterilising it in a saucepan you wash and then use for cooking.
Because they hold more than tampons I rarely have to change it when out. But if I did I wouldn't rinse. Just empty it and put back in.

I just think mooncups are grim in general 🤮

Mooncups aren't grim, they are a brilliant invention. Used them for 10 years at least, saves the environment from all the single use tampons and saves a fortune too. Also if you have heavy periods they hold a lot more than a pad or tampon.

Considering DP shares bodily fluids with me on a semi regular basis, I don't think any epidemiologist is going to have concerns about him washing his face in the sink that's been cleaned as part of dealing with the menstrual cup, somehow.

That’s just wow no words

Bemyclementine · 03/06/2023 20:59

Not nearly as minging as someone I read recently, who washes it under the flush of the toilet. In public loos. She disclosed this in response to a question from someone about hiw do you manage in public loos, where the toilet is in the cubicle and the sink is not.

Beldam · 03/06/2023 21:00

Years ago on here ( I’ve had a mooncup for almost 20 years ) women were suggesting a plant in the bathroom to dispose of the blood. Extra source of iron I suppose…

RightWhereYouLeftMe · 03/06/2023 20:12

I consider myself pretty lax on some hygiene things, but ewwwww!

I’d say it’s more hygienic then using a pot that you also use for cooking lolx

SockQueen · 03/06/2023 21:04

I use the sink at home. Rinse out my period pants/reusable pads there too.

I occasionally think if I get murdered then forensics will get very confused by all the blood traces they might find around the sinks in my house.

Fizbosshoes · 03/06/2023 21:05

Why are mooncups more grim than any other sort of period protection?

Tickstickseverywhere · 03/06/2023 21:07

I live overseas and wash mine in the bidet - it's nice to have a use for it as I don't use it for anything else 🤣

Simianwalk · 03/06/2023 21:08

Hairbrushhandle · 03/06/2023 19:58

This is what puts me off using one. How do you wash it out when at work? Use the sinks and then have to go back into a stall?

I just wipe mine with loo roll at work.

penni00 · 03/06/2023 21:09

The wash basin needs to be washed out after! Especially if people are using the plug and filling the basin up to wash their faces.

That's why I could never get on with it, they chnaged our work toilets to unisex as well so it wasn't fun having to go to the sink with bloody hands etc.

They aren't gross just fiddly and I just cant be arsed putting them up my vagina. I buy biodegradable applicator tampons , I also buy soap and shampoo bars so I'm trying but I cannot use a moon cup. It's too messy for me and I find it uncomfortable especially at work.
