Am I a Mooncup minger?

MooncupMinger · 03/06/2023 19:48

I use a Mooncup (actually a Boots copy one, but that’s beside the point). When I empty it, I pour the contents into the loo, then wash it out in the bathroom sink next to the toilet. Whenever I wash it out I think to myself that DP would probably find it gross that I’m washing it out where he washes his face/brushes his teeth etc. He could also walk in at any second, as we never lock the bathroom door, so there’s always the fear that I’m going to be outed as a Mooncup minger. Tbh he might think it’s a non-event.

I COULD turn the other way and wash it out in the bath, but that seems a bit overkill. Also… what do people do in their downstairs loos (which I don’t have)?!

So…

YABU - you’re a minger and should wash it out in the bath.

YANBU - it’s a normal bodily function (/fluid 😂) and it’s fine to wash it out in the sink.

Doesn’t sound too bad 😊 but maybe rinse it out first in a flushing toilet? I assume you spray disinfectant/Milton on the sink when you’ve finished?

You clearly haven’t read the full thread… rinsing something in a toilet and then inserting it inside yourself was not a popular option (rightly so)! 🤢🤢🤮

WoosMama13 · 04/06/2023 18:56

I don't have one (considering one), but I wouldn't think about washing it elsewhere if the sink is there. Not like you wouldn't rinse the sink and leave tidy is it? Not a minger at all!!
Babies post nappy explosion have been washed in kitchen sinks for much longer than reusable period products have been around. We wash food there, but don't bat an eyelid.
If he says anything, make sure to pass him sanitiser gel or send him to wash his hands every time you catch him with his hands scratching below the waist!! 🙄🤣

Lol. I meant rinse it in the loo first before cleaning it properly in the sink 😊. I’m not of the Mooncup generation so maybe I need more explanation 😍

KateKateLee · 04/06/2023 19:01

If you had blood on your hands you'd wash them in the sink wouldn't you? I don't see that this is much different. You said you poured the contents down the loo first.

ewright86 · 04/06/2023 19:09

I do this everytime I change my mooncup. I have also thought this myself though and decided my DH could sod off if he thought it was gross 😂

AlmostAJillSandwich · 04/06/2023 19:14

Cups intrigue me, but i'd be so terrified of it getting stuck, i've never even been able to use a tampon, tried twice in my first year of periods, never got it even half way in, and didnt feel comfortableto ever try again.
I love my implant, i spot once, maybe twice a year, otherwise no period at all, changed my life.

ewright86 · 04/06/2023 19:18

Hairbrushhandle · 03/06/2023 19:58

This is what puts me off using one. How do you wash it out when at work? Use the sinks and then have to go back into a stall?

I don’t think many people have to change them during the day. They hold more liquid than a tampon and don’t take in/absorb naturally body fluid (like a tampon)

PlantingMarigolds · 04/06/2023 19:30

DinoDaddy · 03/06/2023 20:02

I clean mine by boiling it in a saucepan. I also cook food in said saucepain. Obviously I wash it in-between uses.

🤣🙌

PlantingMarigolds · 04/06/2023 19:30

Barleymilk · 03/06/2023 20:06

I tend to hold mine in the loo and flush and wash it that way.
Sounds even worse than using sink now I think about it.

And then put it back up you?! 🙈😳

PlantingMarigolds · 04/06/2023 19:32

Barleymilk · 03/06/2023 20:09

Urr yes, then give a good shake.
I wouldn't dry it with loo paper as bits may stick to it and stay inside you?
Surely flush water is just tap water? 😃

But it's in the loo. Where people shit. And there's toilet cleaner in there too. Nooo! Stop!

NotmyRLname · 04/06/2023 20:40

Use the sink. One weird thing that I think about when I wash mine out is that if anything happened to me and police forensics got involved they can find blood even when it’s visually cleaned and they would think my boyfriend killed me and washed some of the blood down the sink 😂

Sorry, do you mean actually rinsing it out in the toilet. Because that’s really grim and I can’t believe there are still people coming in this thread to suggest this. Do people honestly use the loo to wash stuff?

caringcarer · 04/06/2023 22:44

As long as you rinse out the sink after it's fine. If you think he'll make a fuss just lock the door.

Ineedcoffee2021 · 05/06/2023 01:50

Thankyou everyone for cementing the fact i will never use a moon cup lol

Boil in saucepans used for food 😮
Getting stuck.....
Sounds way too messy
way to much stuff around for my liking

Never had huge mess issues with tampons, dont need to carry a bottle of water to the toilet for rinsing, no worry about making a crime scene

Just wash the sink out after you have ashes your moon cup in it.
It is just blood & tissue after all.
Think about it this way…if you have a nose bleed you’d hold your head over the sink & not blink an eyelid about it!

On days 1 and 2 I would need to change probably twice at work. I would wash hands first, empty cup, wipe with tissue and reinsert. Then wash hands. And wash out properly in the sink when I get home.
I'm not sure why emptying a mooncup (or other brand) is worse or more gross than anything else related to periods? All toilet and period activity is private and would be unpleasant with an audience, so I lock the bathroom door 🤷‍♀️

HeirToTheIronThrone · 05/06/2023 10:36

Sink here, or sometimes in the shower whilst I'm in there. I have a microwave steriliser thingy. I am close to evangelical about cups, they're so great. Although my brain worm every time I rinse it out is if I went missing would the forensics people find traces of my blood in the sink and think DH had done away with me somehow... Too many true crime podcasts I think!

When I tried a mooncup, they were full to overflowing in less than 20 minutes. I don’t think they’re any good for a heavy/clotty flow.

Thankfully, I now have a Mirena.

YourWinter · 05/06/2023 11:39

Presumably you wash the sink?

I would think wiping with a tissue increases the risk of introducing problems (little bits of tissue), rather than just re-inserting it not quite clear of blood.

pollymere · 05/06/2023 12:56

My bathroom is off my kitchen. The sink is used for all pounding of personal stains and deep-soaking of soiled laundry before it goes in the washing machine... Which includes rinsing out of menstrual blood from regular underwear and from those special period pants. Mine doesn't even get to go down the toilet...

I've never boiled mine in a saucepan.
Mine has never got stuck.
I've never carried a bottle of water around.
It is a little messier than a tampon, but it's not enough of a bother to outweigh the advantages for me.

The big advantage is that I can use it when I'm not sure when my period is going to start. Also, I use it when doing sport to help with pelvic floor issues.

I just think mooncups are grim in general 🤮

me too I could never use one 🤮. no idea why modern sanitary towels have to contain plastic so bad for the environment I don't remember them being like that 30 odd years ago.

Why the puke emoji. Surely you can acknowledge that while it might not be something you'd choose, plenty of women are happy using them.

Personally I prefer my blood being collected within rather than on a towel outside my body and I definitely find a cup more comfortable and practical for all the sports I do.

LoopyLoo1991 · 05/06/2023 16:19

If your husband shaves and cuts himself & gets blood in the sink, isn't that the same thing? Agree with an earlier poster that your overthinkng it. Clean any bloods stains off the sink and sure it all be fine.
