Another person killed by one of these dogs

When will people stop getting these dogs?

There have been so many stories of it going horribly wrong. I don’t know what people are thinking! Especially with vulnerable people in the property like kids and elderly people.

There are hundreds of dogs out there! Why choose to get these dogs that have a history of being unstable.

Its awful!

My face was bitten by a Doberman. I was literally just standing by my door and he lunged at me. Blood everywhere and kids freaking out. I can't imagine how these people feel.

Thick people gonna thick.

Uh…get dog. Big dog he look hard. Get big hard dog. Dog maul toddler face. Only bein friendly like.

Cane corso’s are next in line for being the big hard scary dog of choice. Ready in waiting for when the XL-bullies inevitably end up on the banned dog list.

I agree with the pp upthread about never owning a dog I couldn’t overpower if I needed to.

Filamumof9 · 03/06/2023 23:57

@UsTwoAndThreeDogs we have had a pitbull mix previously. Was part Dobermann and part pitbull. Sweet little guy it was, but fierce when it came to protection. Liked cuddling and tried to sit on my lap 😆

Had to put him to sleep as he started lashing out to our pups and started to growl at my son from a distance. Vet checked and discovered a brain tumor. Though choice but as his owner I could not take the risk that he would seriously injure someone nor did I want to lock him up of people were in the yard. That is no life after having gotten all the freedom and love that we could give. After discussing it with the vet, it was the kindest option to pts. Still miss him, they can be so lovely, are fearless.

People caught breeding them should be put in prison

magneticmoon · 04/06/2023 00:06

We're often on the beach where people bring their dog (s) in the morning and evening. My daughter (under 10) will be playing on the sand and several times in a day will have a dog off the lead run at her. There's no way to tell its intentions at that point, I find it terrifying but want her to be able to play. You just never know what a dog is going to do. And a lot of owners will laugh off that run at my daughter and say oh, he/she's harmless.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 04/06/2023 00:07

I was in A and E Monday night with DH, about three hours and whilst we were there, there were three people who came in after dog attacks. Two were possibly together - young guy with a dropped shoulder that a nurse said was probably going to prove to be a broken collarbone, a young woman with bites all up her lower legs and finally a young woman who had both hands wrapped in blood soaked towels, she looked like she was in shock too. I’m willing to bet none were the victims of Yorkshire Terriers.

As a toddler my daughter was at the beach with her dad and a dog ran over, cocked his leg and pissed on her.

It is for the best I wasn’t there at the time.

@Schooldinners1

Many years ago now, a 3-yr-old in Merced, California wandered out into their grandparent’s back yard and was mauled to death by their pit bull. I remember reading about it. Horrifying.
I’ll never understand the appeal. Or the excuses of people saying “it’s the owner not the breed.”
It’s the damn breed.

Wegelia · 04/06/2023 00:18

Glad you started this thread OP. The more people that are discussing this problem, the better.

Two things..

  1. Does anyone know anyone that owns one of these things that hasn't got it simply to impress their mates/status symbol/drug payment /money earner? Or generally isn't a complete waster??

And 2) These XL bullies are pit bull types /crosses. XL Bullies ARE banned under the DDA and should be muzzled in public, chipped and neutered as they are Pitbull types. The 'breeders' of these things are quite proud of the Pitbull background so it's no secret.

What the F is going on with all these people piss arsing around breaking the law parading illegal dogs around unmuzzled/unneutered and unchallenged by the authorities???

Maybe we should all be writing to our MPs to get the law enforced.

These dogs (and yep, then Cane Corsos) need getting rid of and the public kept safe and there is already a law there to get the ball rolling.

If people are single celled enough to want one in their homes to maul their kids and grannies that's up to them. But Pitbull types should be muzzled in public.

stbrandonsboat · 04/06/2023 00:21

When I was a teenager, I used to walk to the bus stop each day with a nearby Yorkshire terrier attached to my trousers by its jaws. Damn thing used to wait for me 🙄 it never did me any bodily harm though because it was too small and incapable. It was just an annoying bundle of fury.

Felicia00 · 04/06/2023 00:26

You can already see on here why there's an issue with some dogs. Poor owners who blame everyone else , lack of training , leaving dogs intact. Neutering even later can help with aggression.

Felicia00 · 04/06/2023 00:28

My grandma had a Staffordshire bull terrier before . It was lovely natured , neutered and well cared for. I think it's also yobs buying dogs who cause the issues.

DreamTheMoors · 04/06/2023 00:28

@MandyMotherOfBrian

Hahaha good one. Yorkies are adorable.
I have a small dog, half rat-terrier & half chihuahua. She weighs about 10lbs. She hates everybody but me. I think it’s the chihuahua in her - they’re known for their crankiness & bad attitudes.
I get Amazon & other deliveries and when I open the door, she’s insanely barking this roaring bark, always hiding behind me.
I tell the delivery people she’s harmless, but when an unfamiliar unleashed dog is going insane at you, I don’t think that’s very comforting - even if they are little.
There’s something primeval about the fear of a strange dog having it in for you - big or small.

FreyafromLondon · 04/06/2023 00:29

I wish these XL bullies would be banned.

Shhhquirrel · 04/06/2023 00:31

Horrified to read this in the Mail yesterday.
Man attacked by 5 Bull Mastiffs

Henry Sherridan, 23, was having a cigarette on his friend's patio in Preston, Lancashire, on April 26 surrounded by the large Bullmastiffs when they became aggressive.
The canines sank their teeth into him 50 times in a frenzied 45-second attack, ripping off both of his ears and tearing his hand open before their owner climbed on top of Mr Sherridan to protect him.
Mr Sherridan needed two skin grafts on his leg and spent two weeks in hospital, but believes that he is lucky to be alive and doesn't want to see his friend's dogs put down.
Lancashire Police said the vicious attack was 'thoroughly investigated' and was being treated as a civil matter and the dogs will not be destroyed, although they must now wear muzzles if they are outside.
A 'community protection notice' has been imposed, which also bans the dogs from being around children.

stbrandonsboat · 04/06/2023 00:34

They won't be banned until they attack a politician or a member of said politician's family. Or perhaps a wealthy person. Whilst they're only attacking ordinary people, why should the authorities care?

Wegelia · 04/06/2023 00:40

FreyafromLondon · 04/06/2023 00:29

I wish these XL bullies would be banned.

They are banned under the DDA.

The twats that breed them came up with with the stupid name to get round the Pit Bull ban. XL Bullies aren't a proper breed and have no recognition by any sort of accredited body.

Their detailed history goes something like this... One day some twat in baseball cap thought 'I know, I'm just gonna start calling my Pitties - XL Bullies - to get round the law and the law said' oh okay then, carry on'. 🙄 The End.

XL Bullies are Pitbull descendants aka Pitbull types.

I. E. Banned under the DDA.

The authorities just don't seem to have woken up yet to all this blatant law breaking.

Wtf the dogs should be pts as they hunted in a pack and ripped his ears off!! A child would be killed, its a civil matter???! I'm afraid an attack of that level should be mandatory PTS even if the victim doesn't press charges. They are risks to others. I think the UK is going a bit too dog rights mad.

Bobshhh · 04/06/2023 00:41

Having a banned breed, or a dog that is bred for fighting or guarding with big jaw power (xl bullies / cane corso / and even akitas) is basically wearing a massive sign around your neck saying ‘ I’m a massive thicko and I guarantee I will not train this dog properly’.

DreamTheMoors · 04/06/2023 00:50

I’m not quite sure what this is, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t named “Fluffy,” the family pet.

Pastreturns77 · 04/06/2023 00:52

I live fairly nearby to where this tragic incident occurred, the poor lady and her family. There seem to be many of these dogs around and some are huge and utterly terrifying. I'm always paranoid when I walk my little Shih Tzu X around the block as a neighbour of mine has a couple of bull type breeds and he's not the most cautious or considerate individual. They've been known to escape from his back garden a couple of times and waltz off down the street and he's quite laid back about it. He claims they are Staffies but they are flipping big ones if ever they were were 🙄

NOTANUM · 04/06/2023 01:03

I am not sure what the answer is. There are many families with beloved big dogs - including rescues - but on the whole, the risk is too great that some of those may snap and do awful damage.

Perhaps mandatory dog training for owners of breeds over 30kg as part of a licensing scheme? Who would enforce it though?

it’s a tough problem to solve.

cannaecanecorso · 04/06/2023 01:04

I have a thread about a situation I'm in.
My downstairs neighbours bought a cane croso on a whim with no planning, research or experience. They plan on it being loose in a communal garden meant to be for 6 families, with semi open plan to another 4 gardens with 24 families.
Recipe for disaster.

I cannot get my head round people doing something like this and somehow believing it will be fine. Also, in this situation, what is the appeal for the owner.

Sarahtm35 · 04/06/2023 01:13

This is why I adopted a little white dog with literally only 1 tooth!
before I had my children I had a labrador, he was strong on the lead, well trained and soft as anything and when my baby came along he would tiptoe gentle around her and snuggle up to me whilst I was breastfeeding, but I never left them alone together just in case he trod on her or something. Never in a million years would I get one of ‘those’ dogs.
‘those dogs are meant for strong, childless, dedicated and responsible owners who have land and exercise their dogs for atleast 2 hours a day off lead in outdoor spaces like the mountains or woods. Sadly most people who own them can barely look after themselves and walk them at best round the block. And this is why they end up mauling people to death out of sheer frustration from their miserable lives.
all dogs no matter what their breed need off lead exercise in nature. And if you can’t provide that then you shouldn’t keep a dog end of. Even my teeny tiny dogs get 1 hour off lead exercise a day and they’re old.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 04/06/2023 01:24

Remember when Alsatians were the demon breed? Or Rottweilers, or Dobermanns, or Staffies......it's almost as if the commom denominator is shitty owners rather than breed of dog.

And for those moaning about lack of policing, well you can write to your local MP to complain about the tories underfunding the police if you're that bothered. Otherwise, shut the fuck up and accept the situation.
