to wonder why nobody ever mentions how long it takes to hang up washing when they tell you not to use your tumble dryer?

I've just hung up a full (9kg) load of washing. It took me half an hour.

I may be unreasonably slow (but kids/ babies= a lot of very small items in a load) and I totally agree with the environmental arguments - but why, when people say 'oh, you can save loads of money by hanging your washing up' do they never talk about how long it takes?

(I don't think it costs as much as £2 to run a full load through our tumble dryer. Even if it did, that's £2 to buy back half an hour. My hourly rate is well above £4...)

You definitely need to work on your technique.

Nordicrain · 03/06/2023 14:46

Half an hour to hang up a wash is ridiculous. We have a 9 kg machine too. So for that reason YABU.

Bumble84 · 03/06/2023 14:47

Half an hour seems like a crazy amount of time. Are you trying to get everything on perfectly?? Just peg it up any old way, it’ll still dry!

Tittyfilarious81 · 03/06/2023 14:47

I've always line dried and it's honestly never took half an hour to hang out the washing even with lots of tiny things . Why does it take you do long ?

KateyCuckoo · 03/06/2023 14:47

Gosh no you're just really slow!

Felici · 03/06/2023 14:47

Get those octopus arm things for small items socks etc

ComtesseDeSpair · 03/06/2023 14:48

I just did mine and it took less than 15 minutes. Plus I did it in the garden, in the sun, listening to a podcast and drinking a G&T. It barely felt like a chore.

Tumble driers when the sun is out are utter blasphemy! And they ruin your clothes. Keep practicing the hanging.

greenspaces4peace · 03/06/2023 14:48

Yes hanging it up takes longer BUT it takes less time to fold and you may not need to iron pieces.

febrezeme · 03/06/2023 14:48

It's hot and sunny just peg it on anywhich way it will dry fine - 5-10 mins job tops

Thatbloomindog · 03/06/2023 14:49

Yep we have a 9k washing machine load and 5 - 10 minutes max to hang out. For me it’s the ironing that’s the killer. I don’t iron with a tumble dryer but line dried needs a press.
I do always use the line though. Whenever I can.

Testina · 03/06/2023 14:49

Show me anyone who hangs their washing up for 30 mins instead of engaging in paid work.

nebulae · 03/06/2023 14:49

I have a 10kg machine and I can hang a full load in less than 10 mins. And I'm quite pernickety re how I hang things. What on earth are you doing for half an hour?

fyn · 03/06/2023 14:50

My husband takes half an hour and I genuinely don’t understand how it takes so long. It takes five minutes maximum to hang up a 9kg load of baby clothes.

snoozingbaby1476 · 03/06/2023 14:50

@Felici I was about to say the same. I have 2. Game changers. Tea towels & my youngest leggings & pjs also go on them.

Hugasauras · 03/06/2023 14:51

It definitely is more of a time investment. I don't think it would take me half an hour but it depends how many little people things there are as they take disproportionately longer to peg up due to the quantity. I do always think 'How lovely, I can hang the washing out' and then get fed up a third of the way through though so I do empathise!

And we do use our tumble dryer more than we should in this weather but it's just so easy, it's right next to the washing machine so it takes seconds. I'm trying to be better but sometimes I just want to use that time to do something else!

Theredjellybean · 03/06/2023 14:52

OP..i am with you..the faff and time spent hanging stuff on the dryer or on the line is painful..i am trying hard to it but look lovingly at my tumble dryer....

SparklyBlackKitten · 03/06/2023 14:52

Are you by any chance hanging the laundry up blindfolded??
Or with one hand??
Or do you let your baby hang the laundry up?

Why on earth would it take you that long 🤣

BungleandGeorge · 03/06/2023 14:52

greenspaces4peace · 03/06/2023 14:48

Yes hanging it up takes longer BUT it takes less time to fold and you may not need to iron pieces.

I’d say the opposite, much easier to fold and often doesn’t need ironing out of the dryer. It definitely takes longer to hang it out. I’ll line dry until winter but the reason certainly isn’t that it’s easier!

you can’t get a 9kg load in a dryer OP? The capacity is at least half that

Testina · 03/06/2023 14:52

I didn’t even hang mine out today… it’s a glorious sunny day, and it’s bedding. So, I just dumped it on the decking in a loosely spread out jumble. Next time I walk past it, I’ll pick it up and dump it in a different jumble so bits that were underneath get dried.
I am really lazy.
Or efficient 🤷🏻‍♀️

However, the time saved is for sitting in the sun with a book and my phone - not for pulling in some paid hours.

Tinybrother · 03/06/2023 14:52

It did take me that long if I was doing it with baby and toddler “helping”

I also sort socks as I go and hang each person’s things together so I’m doing some of the sorting at the same time instead of at the other wnd

but people who hang washing instead of tumble drying do factor in the time taken to hang out

Iwantmyoldnameback · 03/06/2023 14:53

When the weather is good turn down the spin speed then shake before hanging. Most things won't need ironing.

Hoffi · 03/06/2023 14:53

Are you doing some complicated technique there? It takes me 10 mins tops to peg out a line - if I'm in a rush I'll just peg knickers by one side, instead of two, but as long as they're out, in the sun, in the breeze, it's all good. It's not an art installation.

Hugasauras · 03/06/2023 14:53

And the environmental thing is the only reason I feel guilty about using the tumble dryer on sunny days. I'd happily pay the extra money for the convenience, I don't care about saving money when it comes to laundry, I am all about the convenience and it's far more convenient.

Greenbrush · 03/06/2023 14:54

I don’t peg more than half my washing. I just place it over the line in half. Takes me 5 minutes to do a 9kilo load. I’ve got an airer for underwear.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 03/06/2023 14:54

Why is it taking you half an hour?!
