to wonder why nobody ever mentions how long it takes to hang up washing when they tell you not to use your tumble dryer?

I've just hung up a full (9kg) load of washing. It took me half an hour.

I may be unreasonably slow (but kids/ babies= a lot of very small items in a load) and I totally agree with the environmental arguments - but why, when people say 'oh, you can save loads of money by hanging your washing up' do they never talk about how long it takes?

(I don't think it costs as much as £2 to run a full load through our tumble dryer. Even if it did, that's £2 to buy back half an hour. My hourly rate is well above £4...)

I love hanging out the washing. It's sunny, the birds are singing and nothing fills me with more joy than seeing my clean washing hanging on the line. It never takes me half an hour but I wish it would. It's the nicest "chore"

@Felici I was about to say the same. I have 2. Game changers. Tea towels & my youngest leggings & pjs also go on them.

Can you recommend a particular octopus, please?

GellerYeller · 03/06/2023 15:17

Multiple socktopuses here-one pair of socks per peg- recommend those for bibs/muslins/undies too. I hang bras on them by the strap, no need to peg.
All t shirts/tops/blouses go on a hanger straight from the washer to the line.
Trousers go on those hangers with clips on and those are hung straight on the line.
Unless it’s really breezy then they might blow off the line. Most don’t need ironing so straight into the wardrobe.

tigger1001 · 03/06/2023 15:18

Takes me about 5-10 minutes. I love line drying though and line dry all year round when possible. But I'm not fussy about matching pegs etc.

Sheets feel fresher when line dried to me.

HappyAsASandboy · 03/06/2023 15:19

I have a 10kg machine and it takes me a good 15-20 mins to hang out a load of baby/kids small stuff.

You can save time by hanging school uniform (and other things!) on hangers and then peg the hanger to the line. Easy to put away then, assuming you're not too precious about ironing alight crinkles!

GellerYeller · 03/06/2023 15:19

IKEA actually have eyes printed on their Octopi 😂. You can probably get them in Wilco, Home Bargains etc.

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 03/06/2023 15:20

I bet the first things you hung out were nearly dry by the time you finished.

When the children were very small with lots of little things like socks I would thread a lot onto a nappy pin, much quicker but not sure what the modern equivalent is.
Even without that I can't see how hanging a 9 kg load takes half an hour.

roses2 · 03/06/2023 15:20

Takes me 15-20 min to hang up a load from my 9kg machine. Not sure how others do it so fast!

Divorcedalongtime · 03/06/2023 15:20

It takes me a few minutes… I still tumble dry socks and underwear

Using clothes pegs takes time. I don't use them.

Underwear goes hung over an A frame.
Shirts & trousers go on hangers and hang off the arm of my whirly gig

It would be a lot faster if I could train DD to put her clothes in the laundry basket the right way round rather than inside out.

I’m guessing not much wind in your garden?

Beezknees · 03/06/2023 15:21

Half an hour? Really? 🤨

stayathomer · 03/06/2023 15:23

If it’s all tinies I kind of understand the half hour thing, think how many bibs, muslins etc it is!! We have the world’s worst tumble drier anyway so I love getting stuff out as we have to hang on clothes horses in the winter and it’s hell (we have a condenser drier in case anyone even thinks of getting one!)

itsgettingweird · 03/06/2023 15:23

I hung out 4 loads yesterday and in total the 4 trips didn't take me more than 20 minutes and I have to walk up and down stairs as first floor!

It really shouldn't take that long even with small baby's clothes.

TheSnowyOwl · 03/06/2023 15:24

I have a 10kg washing machine and three little children, but it still doesn’t take me that long to hang out a load.

Is there something in particular slowing you down eg stiff pegs or not having the laundry at your feet with the pegs as you hang it out? If you don’t usually hang out laundry, it might just be it will take you a few cycles to get up to speed but it really should be more like five mins than 30!

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/06/2023 15:24

It's much quicker to use an airer (I've got a minky three tier one that folds down) because you don't need pegs. So I still use my airer on a sunny spot on the patio in the summer and only hang big items like sheets, towels, trousers etc on the washing line.

BungleandGeorge · 03/06/2023 15:21

Same amount as in anyone else's I'd imagine.
A frame tends to be in a sheltered area but facing the sun.
Things do blow off occasionally but not enough to worry about.
If it is very windy I will secure some things with pegs, but nowhere near everything.

FerretFarm · 03/06/2023 15:26

It takes me a long time to OP. I'm not sure how long but half an hour doesn't sound unreasonable to me! It really depends on the items too though. A 9kg load of baby / toddler clothes and underwear or other small items takes longer to hang up than a load where the items are bulkier and there are fewer such as jeans.

GymBergerac · 03/06/2023 15:26

5 minutes, tops! Just whack it up, it'll be fine! Doesn't need to be a work of art 😊

Sandylanes69 · 03/06/2023 15:26

Oh my god, get over yourself - it takes a few minutes to hang up washing.

I like this as metal - same as metal pegs can be left out.

You peg small items on this and quick to bring in if it rains - and can peg small items round other tasks - if kids are very young and interrupting all the time.

I don't get why it was 30 mines for 9kg load though - seems excessive even with little clothes.

Dry them inside out and let her sort them before she can wear them! Eons ago when we were first married my late OH would roll his underpants down his legs and collect his socks, the little parcel went into the basket. I put the parcel into the washing machine like that and hung it out, he soon learned when he had damp socks not to do it.

Oldraver · 03/06/2023 15:27

You may have little ones washing so I get they are smaller...

But for adults I put everything straight on coat hangers...

I agree it is the nicest chore I just find after the chaos I like to take quiet time in the nice garden , the birds singing, the dogs watching .Sorry I like it.

Show me anyone who hangs their washing up for 30 mins instead of engaging in paid work.

I'd imagine there's a fair few of us since WFH became a thing!😂
