to wonder why nobody ever mentions how long it takes to hang up washing when they tell you not to use your tumble dryer?

I've just hung up a full (9kg) load of washing. It took me half an hour.

I may be unreasonably slow (but kids/ babies= a lot of very small items in a load) and I totally agree with the environmental arguments - but why, when people say 'oh, you can save loads of money by hanging your washing up' do they never talk about how long it takes?

(I don't think it costs as much as £2 to run a full load through our tumble dryer. Even if it did, that's £2 to buy back half an hour. My hourly rate is well above £4...)

I like hanging the washing out before bed but it's a MN no-no due to spiders willies.

Spider’s willies?? What??

JenJuni · 05/06/2023 18:33

Anyone else reading this who hasn’t ironed since about 2015/last job interview?!😂

LindorDoubleChoc · 05/06/2023 19:18

I have a neighbour who literally flings all their washing at their sadly wonky and leaning whirly washing line. It lands in clumps and presumably gets dry so maybe they are in the 5 minutes posters on this thread 🤣. I shake everything out because I don't iron and try and space it out to get maximum drying efficiency and it takes me 20+ minutes. But no matching pegs obsession here.

Hang your socks like this, OP.

Two socks, one peg. Takes a second to hang, they also dry quicker when the air flows through the middle.

That's genius. I use an octopus but will try this in future.

tuvamoodyson · 05/06/2023 19:53

Are you standing on your hands and hanging it up with your feet?? I’m very particular about I hang out my washing, but I can fly through it! 🤷‍♀️

Vitriolinsanity · 05/06/2023 20:01

I am the shittest of shit re laundry, but even with a hangover yesterday I threw up a load in under 5 minutes. Baby clothes are just grab a bunch and use one peg aren't they?

Vitriolinsanity · 05/06/2023 20:04

I also iron. For that I spend 1 hour tops on a Sunday morning (in the garden wearing a bikini top in the sun when possible). The DC time me. Probably because the sight of my nekkid body is too much for their sensitive little eyes.

I'm a convert to hanging it on the rotary. But it shouldn't take that long! Ive got into the habit of hanging up the washing so each person has one quadrant of the washing line. (There are 4 of us). So when I unpeg it I can fold straight away into the correct piles. And if I do several loads I just add to each quadrant. Sad but it works and makes life way easier. I clearly need to get a life.

I do the same. Much quicker.

I do try and hang each person's washing in one area but I don't actually divide into quadrants. Also socks often just slot in where they can ( in pairs).

purplehair1 · 05/06/2023 22:16

I have a handy thingy with pegs on I hang inside for socks and pants - it’s great as if there’s a sudden shower at least the pants and socks are dry!

ComtesseDeSpair · 03/06/2023 14:48

I just did mine and it took less than 15 minutes. Plus I did it in the garden, in the sun, listening to a podcast and drinking a G&T. It barely felt like a chore.

Tumble driers when the sun is out are utter blasphemy! And they ruin your clothes. Keep practicing the hanging.

I dunno, handling a G&T whilst under the influence of clothes pegs has gotta be wrong on a lot of levels.

Tiredmama53 · 06/06/2023 08:51

I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old and even when they were newborns and we were using cloth nappies and had loads of inserts its never taken me half an hour to hang out the washing. You are abnormally slow I'd say

Whattheflipflap · 06/06/2023 08:56

We have a washer dryer, so we are only 7.5 kilos load but I’ve timed myself. It took 4m 12s
lots of kidddie socks, baby vests etc.
do you have good pegs?

1mabon · 07/06/2023 12:15

What the dickens is the matter with this woman? I'd rather save £2.00, she ceary must not need to think twice about using the drier, lucky old her.

Caiti19 · 07/06/2023 12:22

I have wondered the same thing, OP. Nobody talks about the time it takes! But, I now don't hang up socks, I scatter them on an outside table if it's very sunny - or any surface where I know the air will still get at them. Thank you to the person who suggested hanging in "quadrants" above - if you can get them off the line and folded before the next wash needs to be put out, I can see where that could be a game changer. I love clothes hung out - they feel so much fresher than from the dryer - especially sheets!

Haveyouthought · 07/06/2023 14:00

I’m with you there. Doesn’t take me quite that long but they always dry hard and take forever to iron, which surely uses more electricity than an efficient dryer.

Theyrealltaken · 07/06/2023 17:01

You need more practice, takes me 10 mins max to hang out a full load, including undies and socks etc

I never iron, just give everything a good shake before hanging to dry and it's fine. Can't think of a worse job than ironing!

Redhenwattle701 · 07/06/2023 17:19

Heaven knows why but I find rotary lines faddly, especially when the tension in the line goes slack.

My dream is to have a long traditional outdoor washing line, properly sunk at both ends, held up with a pole in the middle positioned across a field adjacent to a veg patch and a scarecrow.

Catvieira · 07/06/2023 18:19

It takes forever OP! I agree! Especially if you’re like me and refuse to iron anything 🤣 stay strong, we hardly get any good weather for it haha

Figmentofmyimagination · 07/06/2023 18:31

I put shirts etc on the line hanging from coat hangers, killing 2 birds with one stone as they then need little or no ironing.

I put little things - socks, pants etc - on an indoor clothes horse straight from the machine as this saves the faff of pegging them out, especially if the weather looks a bit iffy.
