to wonder why nobody ever mentions how long it takes to hang up washing when they tell you not to use your tumble dryer?

I've just hung up a full (9kg) load of washing. It took me half an hour.

I may be unreasonably slow (but kids/ babies= a lot of very small items in a load) and I totally agree with the environmental arguments - but why, when people say 'oh, you can save loads of money by hanging your washing up' do they never talk about how long it takes?

(I don't think it costs as much as £2 to run a full load through our tumble dryer. Even if it did, that's £2 to buy back half an hour. My hourly rate is well above £4...)

It takes me so long to hang out washing and then when it comes out of the tumble dryer it at least is dehaired (we have pets) and it doesn’t need ironing.
otmight be better for the environment but I don’t have the time.

I have spent nearly 2 years not using my tumble dryer and it has ended up costing me money in lost time and work. Plus it takes ages to dry especially in winter.

Actually I'm surprised so many people are so confident how long it takes them. I've never timed it and I couldn't guess. Maybe 5 minutes. Maybe 20...

If you listen to podcasts etc then it’s easier to tell

Using clothes pegs takes time. I don't use them.

Underwear goes hung over an A frame.
Shirts & trousers go on hangers and hang off the arm of my whirly gig

It would be a lot faster if I could train DD to put her clothes in the laundry basket the right way round rather than inside out.

You know, it’s actually better for clothes to be washed ( and dried) inside it 😜 Helps stop piling, fading etc

Don't tell me that!
I'd rather turn everything the right way round for drying than do it at ironing time. And yes most stuff does get ironed.

ASmallFurryCreatureFromAlphaCentauri · 03/06/2023 16:16

I stick everything that can be put on a hanger, onto a hanger. Put the hanger on the line wait for it to dry and put it away on the same hanger. (Pretty much nothing I own needs ironing). It saves so much time and effort! I use a socktopus for socks/bras etc so they can't escape, but that goes on the line too.

Lazy Line Dry

Lazy Line Dry: Clothes dryers are among the biggest energy hogs in a typical home*. Line-drying clothes cuts the energy use down to zero, but who has time for that? Here's how you can line-dry clothes without extra work. The key is to handle each item...

I suppose if you have loads of tiny bits like baby vests and tops it takes longer especially if you're not used to it and you have little ones wanting to help.

whataboutism · 03/06/2023 16:17

DO you have back pain ? Have you recovered ? Were you trying to do it with the baby ? DO it first thing in the morning with a timer. DO it when they are asleep. DO it when you have energy. Change your pegs, get quality pegs. have a peg hanger. 10mn tops for a full load. Imagine that you paid someone to do it. 30mn is just not acceptable.

BadNomad · 03/06/2023 16:18

I don't even peg...

I just flop long things over two of the ropes(?) and socks n undies over one.

Tinybrother · 03/06/2023 16:19

Hanging washing on a sunny day is one of life’s simple pleasures. I listen to a podcast and dither by the line for as long as I can. I have a long, five line washing line and a socktopus. I hang things carefully, in an incredibly anal order.

Still doesn’t take half an hour.

What a great idea!!

ladymaiasura · 03/06/2023 16:19

No one mentions it because it doesn’t take that long. Half an hour?! Bonkers. Our tumble drier broke at the start of lockdown. I got used to not having it, never got round to getting it fixed, and don’t miss it now. I think it would be useful for towels but that’s about it.

wyntersuhn · 03/06/2023 16:19

We have an 8kg dryer and I sort the washed clothes as I hang them out. Even with my fullest of full loads, it only takes me max 10 mins to get it all hung out. Half and hour is unreasonably!

maiafawnly · 03/06/2023 16:21

It doesnt take me quite that long, but its a job i hate. I hate the bending and picking them up. I hate the feel of wet fabric. I actually hate line dried clothes, and towels and bedding especially, they feel crunchy and i prefer the smell of them dried in tumble dryer. Then taking it all in again i spend 20 minutes shaking everything to make sure theres no bugs hidden in places.

So i just chuck them in the dryer all year round and suck up the costs. Im far too busy to waste time on a job i hate for results i dislike.

TooJoy · 03/06/2023 16:23

I don’t have a tumble dryer so I’m biased but the best thing about these sunny days is being able to wash and dry so much more washing.

I’ve done dressing gowns, towels, sheets, sofa covers etc and the regular washing all over a couple of days and there’s no way I’d put all of that in a tumble dryer even if I owned one because it’s a waste of money and nature can do it for you for free.

Another good thing about hanging the washing up is that it blows all of the dust and things off of it.

It usually takes me about 10mins max to hang the washing out as it’s a few seconds for each garment.
Are you including washing time in that half an hour?

MissClimpsonsTypingBureau · 03/06/2023 16:23

Wow ok, IABVU to be so slow - I don't know how the rest of you manage in 5 min but I believe you that it's my own stupid fault!

masterbakeoff · 03/06/2023 16:23

You need one of these. No bending, push it along the line as you peg. Although mine was about £15 from the midl at Lidl

georgarina · 03/06/2023 16:25

How many in your house?? I have 4 of us and I do a load 4-5x a week and don't have a dryer. Annoying sometimes but takes 5-10 min and no ironing needed

willWillSmithsmith · 03/06/2023 16:25

I always use my dryer no matter the weather because I get seagulls in my garden and I was sick of my clothes getting covered in bird poop. Now I only have to rant about my windows! I swear they deliberately aim and shoot (it should that be shit!)

StrawberryWater · 03/06/2023 16:28

Takes 5-10 minutes tops.

Taptap2 · 03/06/2023 16:28

I’ve been told not to peg out clothes for the hay fever sufferers which is 3 out of 4 of us and we all seem to be allergic to different pollen so far this means I haven’t been able to peg out clothes this summer and my husband hasn’t started sniffing yet.

Poppins2016 · 03/06/2023 16:29

I'll echo the "socktopus" recommendations. I could do with another...

polkadottysilly · 03/06/2023 16:30

We wash all adult clothes apart from underwear and hang to dry. Same with towels. All year round!

We wash all kids clothes and everyone's undies and it's tumble dried once a week for 50p.

We have a prepayment meter and I'm happy to spend 50p once a week because I HATE pegging out socks and small items.

I live in a windy place and stuff would get blown away unless pegged. (Sometimes with extra pegs!)

timegoingtooquickly · 03/06/2023 16:30

@snoozingbaby1476 you'll find two isn't enough. We have 4 which if we have two loads out are all gainfully employed! Useful to bring in little things quickly if there's a shower too 🤣

£60?!

My drier costs a max £1.50 a load., usually a £1, I only use the machine 5 times a week max, 3 of us the house, so like £7 ob a bad week or so. Thats like 2 months of the cost of drying laundry when you can dry outside a maximum of that a year. And my luck means im on a 12 hour day shift every time the weather is decent too.
