to wonder why nobody ever mentions how long it takes to hang up washing when they tell you not to use your tumble dryer?

I've just hung up a full (9kg) load of washing. It took me half an hour.

I may be unreasonably slow (but kids/ babies= a lot of very small items in a load) and I totally agree with the environmental arguments - but why, when people say 'oh, you can save loads of money by hanging your washing up' do they never talk about how long it takes?

(I don't think it costs as much as £2 to run a full load through our tumble dryer. Even if it did, that's £2 to buy back half an hour. My hourly rate is well above £4...)

It takes me 10 minutes tops. And I have OCD so pegs must be matching, all types of clothing together, each family member separated. I line dry everything, I’m obsessed and have become really efficient.

That's my way too except for I'm more bothered about colours that whose clothes they are

Moolimooli · 03/06/2023 15:48

(before anyone asks, she loves doing it and loves being useful, I had to sit on my hands to not go and take over!)

ImAGoodPerson · 03/06/2023 15:48

DH hung the washing out the other day and pegged all the tshirts about 2 -3 inches from the bottom so they all had peg stretches in them, I wish he'd bloody taken half hr to do it properly as they whole lot needed washing again. He also pegged some cardis up by the shoulders so they also dried funny 🤬

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 03/06/2023 15:49

I have a 9kg machine . I put a left over peice of fish in the airfryer for 6 minutes and went and hung out the washing . As I was walking back in the airfyer was just going off
6 minutes. Why is it taking you half hour !

FatCatBum · 03/06/2023 15:50

Unless it was 9kg of socks, that seems a ridiculously long amount of time. I can't say it's ever taken more than 5-10 minutes to hang mine out (usually closer to 5)

HideTheCroissants · 03/06/2023 15:50

I put two full loads on the line this morning and it took 10 minutes. One load which was all the “smalls” so all the “fiddly” things like socks and pants and one load of all adult DSs dark things from the week t-shirts, trousers, hoodies, PJs etc. That time included getting the line out of shed and putting it up. I do put the basket on a table beside me as I peg out so no bending and I do have a couple of socktopuses (or is it socktopusi?). I’ll take it soon and most of it will just be folded and put away, just a couple of things may need to go in the ironing basket….

I refuse to use a drier for environmental reasons.

Manifest828 · 03/06/2023 15:50

Thursday-Friday I have done 10 loads of washing in a 9kg washing machine and have managed to hang them up and dry. This is in between taking kids to school/nursery ,wfh & getting other household jobs done. I did start my first load at 7am. I think each load took me roughly 10 minutes max to unload and hang

Hesma · 03/06/2023 15:53

For most people it takes nowhere near that long and laundry is so much fresher when you peg it out

DeliciouslyDecadent · 03/06/2023 15:54

You need to speed up @MissClimpsonsTypingBureau
It takes me no more than 10 minutes.

Meeting · 03/06/2023 15:55

OP are you running backwards and forwards with handfuls of washing? That's the only way I can think it would take so long. My advice is to empty your machine into a basket and bring the basket along the line with you, pegging as you go.

Natsku · 03/06/2023 15:56

I have a 7kg machine, takes me 10 minutes tops to hang up the washing. You must be doing it weirdly.

AppleWax · 03/06/2023 15:56

We never line dry because all the birds crap on everything as they fly over the garden! We use a folding dryer in the conservatory instead if it’s really sunny/warm.

AppleWax · 03/06/2023 15:57

And it takes me about 5 mins if that to fill two folding dryers.

Bridgingthefeckingmassivegap · 03/06/2023 15:57

You need a socktopus or two from Ikea to save doing all the individual tiny socks etc.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/06/2023 15:57

Felici · 03/06/2023 14:47

Get those octopus arm things for small items socks etc

A socktopus. Game changer.

MrsMiddleMother · 03/06/2023 15:59

Yanbu! I don't tumble dry clothes because they also shrink but as a family of 5 it seems to take so much time to hang up washing, we've 3 clothes horses in the house just for it all

Tinkerbyebye · 03/06/2023 16:00

You need to practise more, 5 mins max

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/06/2023 16:01

Half an hour,how?!

PupInAPram · 03/06/2023 16:01

Takes me 5 minutes max. And I'm old and slow.

Funkyblues101 · 03/06/2023 16:02

Less important with young children's clothes, as they grow out of them before they wear them out, but tumble drying absolutely knackers clothes, even more so than machine washing. If you like replacing clothes often then go for it, but we prefer to buy nice clothes and make them last for years/decades. So they need to be hung to dry.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 03/06/2023 16:03

BriarHare · 03/06/2023 15:36

Yeah, sod that.

I can’t be arsed to peg out washing. Also the only washing line we have is retractable and that’s a faff. Plus, I HATE looking at washing if I’m in the garden.

Out of the washing machine, into the dryer, 60 mins later it’s all done. Doesn’t need ironing. I just can’t be doing with an alternative.

We have a holiday house in a hot US state. We are actually not allowed to dry washing outside there.

What's their reasoning for that bizarre rule? You're allowed guns but don't attack people's sensibilities with a few t shirts on the line...?!

I'm with those who say it's a lovely way to spend time. I also spent a couple of hours this week weeding the path. It's satisfying light manual work.

I'd resent it if I had a partner who didn't pull his weight, or if my life was very busy trying to make enough money to get by. So I realise I'm lucky. But I'm with Gandhi who worked at his loom for an hour a day to keep himself grounded.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 03/06/2023 16:04

Half an hour seems excessive…

Line-dried clothes need minimal ironing, so you get time back on that

BarbaraofSeville · 03/06/2023 16:07

I'm another one who would never tumble dry except in winter as it ruins clothes, is bad for environment and a waste of money.

But anyone who claims they're 'not allowed' to should challenge it.

It doesn't affect anyone and would never stand up in court as it comes under your right to quiet enjoyment of your property. Plus it's better than alternatives due to risk of damp as well as other reasons above.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 03/06/2023 16:07

Actually I'm surprised so many people are so confident how long it takes them. I've never timed it and I couldn't guess. Maybe 5 minutes. Maybe 20...

DeliciouslyDecadent · 03/06/2023 16:09

I don't bother to hand out socks- they go on the clothes rack in the utility room.

Since reading your post, I've hung out 3 towels and a bath mat. I reckoned that from picking up the towel, picking up 2 pegs and hanging it up, each towel took 5 seconds.
