to wonder why nobody ever mentions how long it takes to hang up washing when they tell you not to use your tumble dryer?

I've just hung up a full (9kg) load of washing. It took me half an hour.

I may be unreasonably slow (but kids/ babies= a lot of very small items in a load) and I totally agree with the environmental arguments - but why, when people say 'oh, you can save loads of money by hanging your washing up' do they never talk about how long it takes?

(I don't think it costs as much as £2 to run a full load through our tumble dryer. Even if it did, that's £2 to buy back half an hour. My hourly rate is well above £4...)

Get those octopus arm things for small items socks etc

We call it a socktopus. 🤓

Same amount as in anyone else's I'd imagine.
A frame tends to be in a sheltered area but facing the sun.
Things do blow off occasionally but not enough to worry about.
If it is very windy I will secure some things with pegs, but nowhere near everything.

I suspect you don’t live in Shetland though 😂😂

I agree! Takes me an hour sometimes to hang washing up - small kids needing me every 2 minutes and what feels like a million tiny pieces of clothing! When I’m against it time wise I put stuff in the dryer. I’ve got a 10kg washer and need two lines to dry it all and it takes forever to hang up then take down and fold then put away. If the kids are happy doing something I don’t mind doing it but when they’re nagging at me it drives me potty.

TripleDaisySummer · 03/06/2023 15:30

I have my eyes on these as well

As have a rail with coat hangers to hang up to dry in kitchen already - and they can in winter go straight into budi drier we have - so could maybe do similar in summer grab them from rail and stick on line if not dry or other way at end of day.

@MissClimpsonsTypingBureau I'm with you, it takes me 30 minutes to hang out a full 9kg load. I do like to shake out and shape everything so no ironing is needed, but it feels like a lot of time when I can put it up indoors in 15 minutes! (No tumble dryer here)

gemloving · 03/06/2023 15:31

I have two kids and we don't have a tumble dryer. Kids are playing or helping whilst I hang it up.

gemloving · 03/06/2023 15:32

P.s. they're 4 &2 and we use reusable nappies.

ShandaLear · 03/06/2023 15:33

Did you stop for a cup of tea and a Hob Nob in the middle? That makes no sense.

SunnySaturdayMorning · 03/06/2023 15:33

Why would you listen to anyone telling you not to use your dryer?

Just shove everything in there that can be shoved in.

Isithalfterm · 03/06/2023 15:34

I’m with you OP. Those who say it’s only a few minutes might have fewer washes or more time as with approx 6-8 loads of washing a week in our house, pegging out and unpegging is a massive time burden that isn’t something I can accommodate, even if the weather is favourable.

I will line dry bedding in high summer if I’m on holiday and pottering around the house as sheets are lovely when dried outside but mostly it’s not a sensible use of time when I could bung it in the tumble drier 🤷🏼‍♀️

Unpaid women’s work that our grandmothers were so delighted to get rid of.

BriarHare · 03/06/2023 15:36

Yeah, sod that.

I can’t be arsed to peg out washing. Also the only washing line we have is retractable and that’s a faff. Plus, I HATE looking at washing if I’m in the garden.

Out of the washing machine, into the dryer, 60 mins later it’s all done. Doesn’t need ironing. I just can’t be doing with an alternative.

We have a holiday house in a hot US state. We are actually not allowed to dry washing outside there.

Namechangeed · 03/06/2023 15:37

Hang your socks like this, OP.

Two socks, one peg. Takes a second to hang, they also dry quicker when the air flows through the middle.

Show me anyone who hangs their washing up for 30 mins instead of engaging in paid work.

Bizarre comment. Anyone who is freelance and wfh? That said 30 minutes is excessive, I agree.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 03/06/2023 15:39

I have to say that is a long time even if you need to colour match the pegs
I have a disability which means I can only use my right hand and it takes me less that that!

RightWhereYouLeftMe · 03/06/2023 15:40

America is so weird. Why would anyone feel so strongly about other people's washing being in their garden that they actually forbid it 😂

Starlightstarbright1 · 03/06/2023 15:40

I don’t have a tumble drier so not an option.
it is quicker to peg out than put it on heated airer

Kimchikeffir · 03/06/2023 15:41

Because the work that women do in the home is not valued

JulieHoney · 03/06/2023 15:43

An airer for the tiny bits will fix that - pegging a zillion little socks and bits is a pain. Or a socktopus as others have suggested.

However, once you get the hang of it it's a 5-10 minute job, everything smells nicer and stains come out better in sunshine.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 03/06/2023 15:43

30 mins to hang a load! You'd absolutely have to be going at snail pace plus some to achieve that.

9kg load would take less than 10 for me to hang. Including loads of socks and pants (inside out so having to turn back - thanks teens) so I have no idea wtf you're doing.

Hanging out the washing on a nice day is one of life’s pleasures. I enjoy it.

Moolimooli · 03/06/2023 15:45

I didn't think it was possible to take half an hour to hang out washing until I saw my mum do it recently. 😂

Moolimooli · 03/06/2023 15:46

Posted too soon, sorry. Anyway she is 82 so that is her excuse. Anyone else, I'm still a bit mystified!

TakeMe2Insanity · 03/06/2023 15:47

We always line hang ours in the dry summer, the problem is the rest of the time when it is wet or damp.

Fleebags · 03/06/2023 15:47

Are you a sloth by any chance?
