Is this really unprofessional (music tutor)

DS had an online music lesson booked yesterday at 4:30. We transfer the money during the lesson. Tutor didn’t ‘show up’. Then got a text at 5:10 ‘really sorry I got home from work and fell asleep 😁🙈 - can you do 5.30?’

DH and DS find this funny but I find it totally unprofessional! AIBU?

You know you hired a human and not a robot, right?

You know you hired a human and not a robot, right?

But surely if you have work booked in and are likely to fall asleep you set an alarm?

It’s happened once, if it happens again then you deal with it.
Did you never make a mistake OP?

roses2 · 27/05/2023 11:26

Of course it’s very unprofessional. You have need to be punctual for appointments! Is this the first time you have used this person?

Paq · 27/05/2023 11:26

One off, forgive-able. He could be ill or something. If it's a regular occurrence then no, end the arrangement.

Appletreess · 27/05/2023 11:28

We’ve been using this tutor for several months, she has come highly recommended and overall we are happy, just find this response out of order.

I would have laughed too. Not something that would worry me at all.

Spidertights · 27/05/2023 11:29

Worthy of an eye roll, but nothing more unless it happens again or you have other concerns.

What makes you think she might think it’s likely she falls asleep?

YABU.

Why? Did you want the response to be more grovelling?

Did you want her to Not offer an alternative time?

How should she have responded?

Chickenkeev · 27/05/2023 11:31

Shit happens, wouldn't get too worked over it tbh

Haywirecity · 27/05/2023 11:31

At least they were honest. If I'd fallen asleep, I'd have lied and said I'd locked myself out of the car with the phone inside. Ultimately, it's the same outcome that the lesson has been missed.
Your son doesn't seem bothered so I just couldn't get too worked up about this. An eyeroll at most.

Appletreess · 27/05/2023 11:32

Maybe it would have been better to apologise and say she was caught in traffic or something?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 27/05/2023 11:32

At least they were honest. Would you have preferred them to make up some lie about being sick , or worse, someone in their family being sick , emergency , blah blah.

if they do it again, they are unreliable. If it’s just this once, you have found someone with integrity ( and low energy levels).

So you’d rather someone you’ve hired for your son was a liar?

You think it is more professional for her to be a liar than be honest?

You think a liar is a good role model for your son?

And how exactly would that make the outcome any different???

Chickenkeev · 27/05/2023 11:33

So you're saying you'd be happier if she was dishonest? Pretty ridiculous.

Spiderboy · 27/05/2023 11:36

If you are otherwise really happy I would laugh it off as long as it was a one off. She was honest

RegainingTheWill2023 · 27/05/2023 11:38

It's a human error. Not life threatening just unfortunate. And as you don't pay until the lesson is underway you are not out if picket. If it happened regularly I'd be pissed off and think it "really unprofessional".
I don't get why you are so outraged nor why you'd prefer a lie.

Appletreess · 27/05/2023 11:39

I doubt it. I'd guess the tutor had a rough day and was tired but didn't expect to fall asleep.
It's happened to me and I've awoken at 7 all confused not knowing if it's morning or evening

Appletreess · 27/05/2023 11:40

I feel that she thinks her time is more valuable than ours. She’s always got ‘such a busy schedule’ with rehearsals, gigs and school teaching it’s like we don’t matter

Oh dear these things happen.
I might have been cross for 5 minutes but then had a laugh like your DH and S.

Why would you think that when this has never happened before? Confused

Stop trying to find problems where there aren’t any.
