Is this really unprofessional (music tutor)

DS had an online music lesson booked yesterday at 4:30. We transfer the money during the lesson. Tutor didn’t ‘show up’. Then got a text at 5:10 ‘really sorry I got home from work and fell asleep 😁🙈 - can you do 5.30?’

DH and DS find this funny but I find it totally unprofessional! AIBU?

Why can’t you son replace strings and tune his instrument? That’s ridiculous.

It depends how old he is and what grade. It isn't as easy as you make out in your other post, irrespective of how good the teacher is.
I had a vague memory of ABRSM exam rules saying a pupil had to tune their own violin from grade 4 so I checked out the current regulations.

"Tuning: At Grades Initial–5, the teacher or accompanist may tune the candidate’s instrument (or advise on tuning) before the exam begins. At Grades 6–8, candidates must tune their instruments themselves. Examiners are unable to help with tuning"

Personally I think a child should be able to tune their violin long before grade 6, but those are the exam regulations so it's clear that an exam board also doesn't think it's ridiculous that a child at grade 3 standard can't tune their own violin.

For my younger pupils I teach the parents how to tune the violin so that they are practising on a tuned instrument during the week and then gradually I teach the child as they develop.

Changing a string is even more difficult - it requires a lot of dexterity and carefulness which many children don't develop until they are a lot older. It's tricky.

Urgh - sorry OP but you sound super irritating. The mere fact that you would have preferred her to lie tells me you’re unreasonable- I pity anyone working for you. You seemed determined to dislike her and you’ve now got the perfect reason to sack her. Ridiculous.

You have never sat down after work and dozed off?

Hankunamatata · 28/05/2023 18:26

I actually like their honesty

Sigmama · 28/05/2023 18:26

Hank - no, I've never fallen asleep in front of the TV neither

With regards to tuning I’m not sure using the word ‘ridiculous’ for not being able to tune is either helpful or accurate. She has shown us what to do and also sent us a YouTube link and app, but the pegs on his instrument are very stiff and if it’s really out of tune the adjusters are futile. Both myself and his Dad have tried and ended up snapping strings on both occasions.

maybe we are ridiculous or maybe you’re just incredibly rude and naive
