This is really piss poor of Netflix and pure price gouging in action imo.

Am going to cancel and sign up to Disney plus instead.

What about signing in when your in hotels etc? I travel a lot for work and most hotels these days have the option to use streaming services, but you have to use your own account. How will that work?

A hotel will be pretty easy to spot in tech terms — one IP, specific geographical location, multiple people signing in and out daily.

That said, I’ve noticed recently more hotels are now doing the connected screen thing, where you can ‘sling’ the streaming from your own phone/tablet to the hotel room TV. It means you don’t have to sign in on the hotel TV.

GuitarsUnderTheStars · 27/05/2023 07:25

I can’t believe they allowed this to go on for so long. We have a lot of tv subscriptions, Netflix is the one we can’t see ourselves getting rid of, it’s the one we watch most and the others don’t really compare.

CornishGem1975 · 27/05/2023 07:26

Yeah but is it "allowed" under the new rules?

JandalsAlways · 27/05/2023 07:26

Cancelled ages ago, the only reason to keep staying was because I shared it. With Amazon Prime now, costs about a third less and much better quality shows.

PinkButtercups · 27/05/2023 07:33

Piss poor to clamp down on the people
who aren't paying for their service? Eh, okay 🤣

amylou8 · 27/05/2023 07:49

Well they charge more for more screens so if you're sharing it surely your only getting what you pay for? We use it for 4 people, 4 screens and 3 different addresses and will be cancelling.

I think Netflix is fine for a family but it's taking the piss when you've got more than one household on it.

Personally I cancelled for apple TV earlier this year. There's nothing worth watching and it wasn't worth it anymore.

My parents and sibling are my family. It's not pisstaking if you pay extra for extra screens 🤷🏻
What eill happen is most people will drop to more basic one, pay 1 extra screen making metflix whole like £1 extra if that. Actually more will leave.

Are you just deliberately missing the point that people are paying for more than one screen and should be able to use the service?

DH & I both regularly travel to Asia, Europe & US with work.

Under this ridiculous money grabbing system, if my DH is traveling and wanted to watch his paid for the Netflix in say the US, while the kids and I (all part of one household) want to watch our other paid for screens, they would expect us to pay more?

We can't exactly just bring our TV to random hotels to associate the device with it!

Pemba · 27/05/2023 08:18

We have the Premium package for 4 screens and we've been continously subscribed for about 12 years now.

DD and her partner do actually live at the same address as us so should count as household members you would think? But they're currently travelling abroad and will be for over a year. The new rules are saying that logging in at a different address will be OK, but you have to log in at your home address once a month. Obviously they can't do that. This also seems to mean they wouldn't even be able to get themselves their own account over there, since they are constantly on the move. Seems Netflix don't want travelling customers!

As a Premium customer I also allowed my elderly parents at a different address to log in and watch The Crown etc. But, similar to pps, I think my parents are unlikely to get their own account.

I was quite OK with paying £15.99 a month, even though it's pricey, but with these stupid new rules I feel a cancellation coming on. They'll have lost a steady customer. I think a lot of people will do the same, they're already expensive compared to other streaming services and they might have shot themselves in the foot here.

Stopthatknocking · 27/05/2023 08:32

I ve only heard about this in the media, I've had no notification from Netflix.
So when does this start and how do we officially get told about it?

I'm not paying extra on the say so of an article by Martin Lewis.

And what about my student dd? She is still part of my household but away for longer than 1 month at a time, so can't get back to log on at home.
She can't afford her own subscription, and has no TV or TV licence, so this and disney are her only TV sources.

gogohmm · 27/05/2023 08:33

Seems entirely reasonable. We don't share the log in, its programmed into the tv

I have had an email and a pop up on Netflix over the last 24 hours. You might be fine saying she's in your household or she may need to look to whether she can afford £6.99 a month if she really wants it.

Willmafrockfit · 27/05/2023 08:35

you can pay £4.99 extra for another person nominated

NerrSnerr · 27/05/2023 08:40

If they are expecting members of the 'household' to log in once a month at home students may have to decide whether they get a shared account with housemates for the year (like we used to do with cable back in the day) or have their own account they just keep forever.

I don't blame Netflix for this, I know we've allowed different families to use our account over the years and that has saved them money but obviously it would have been income for Netflix if they'd subscribed.

Nothingisblackandwhite · 27/05/2023 08:41

I share profiles with my sister and dad , I pay the £1599 account . I will just move to a basic one of £4.99 . I doubt anyone else is shilling to pay if they do will be the basic so I can’t really see how this is making Netflix money . It currently the most expensive supplier I pay and the only benefit was sharing .

Pemba · 27/05/2023 08:45

But would they have subscribed, that's the question? Often the extra people are student children or elderly parents who can't afford their own account or lack the IT skills to set up their own account.

They are throwing away a lot of goodwill here.

Deathbyfluffy · 26/05/2023 16:47

IP addresses. They uniquely identify your router’s traffic, so if the logic is used at another IP they’ll know.

So if I watch it at my house and at work then I'd be breaking their new rules? (Work is pet sitting, I'm not slacking!! 😂😂)

FixTheBone · 27/05/2023 08:49

Soubriquet · 26/05/2023 16:48

But again that won’t work. What about when you’re travelling?

or say you have children that move between parents on a weekly basis.

They also know what device it is. You can see this on your account settings...

It'll say something like samsung TV - Bradford, they'll also know if it's on a mobile or fixed broadband connection

In reality it's pretty easy. If there's an account or profile, being frequently used on the same smart TV or xbox at an address that never visits the home address, that's pretty easy to spot. Same with mobiles.

I have the opposite problem with Disney+, when I'm on call overnight at work I've put it on, in a building with 30,000 employess and thousands of PCs, it detects this as dodgy use and locks the account.

I certainly won't be. I watch it so rarely that using the 2nd profile was a good alternative. I only watch the odd series (Ozark and that's finished). I watch Prime more now.

Doooop · 26/05/2023 18:33

They should do this with amazon prime too. Only the account holder can order to their house. If regular deliveries to the same address are being made then it should be flagged

I regularly send orders from Amazon to my DD's address. Why should I not be able to do that?

Qilin · 27/05/2023 09:03

StrugglingWeight · 27/05/2023 01:29

Presumably with uni students they will just pay you the 4.99?

Most won't - it's a lot of month for students on a loan.
So people are just likely to reduce their subscriptions down to Netflix if they can't get what they are paying for. We pay for 4 screens - but won't bother doing so if dd can't access it whilst away at university. No point - we may as well save ourselves some money and drop to 1 or 2 screens instead.
So Netflix won't benefit from us. Infact they will lose money 🤷‍♀️

I think it's reasonable to expect a uni student to pay for their own netflix.

I'm anti this policy, and will probably cancel because its not worth it for 10.99. But I don't get all the posters up in arms about what their uni student will do, everyone paid for their own netflix in my day

Qilin · 27/05/2023 09:34

Netflix didn't exist in my day.
We never bothered with tv licences in my day, so can't imagine most would bother with paying a ton in various subscriptions.

Won't most revert back to illegal downloads, etc and cycling free/reduced trials as in the past? So can't see Netflix benefitting either way.

PuttingDownRoots · 27/05/2023 09:38

Compared with the cost of a few beers (or even 1 beer in some parts of the country!) £4.99 is a bargain for a student. Depends how they want to prioritise their spending which is their prerogative)
