Time to cancel that Netflix sub

This is really piss poor of Netflix and pure price gouging in action imo.

Am going to cancel and sign up to Disney plus instead.

Snap-we have the full package so my
uni kids can watch as well.

If we can’t share, then I’ll cancel it and neither of my teen/young twenties kids will watch anything Netflix make as they can’t afford to pay for their own subscriptions. Is that what Netflix want-nobody in their twenties watching their stuff?

It explains how to deal with this situation in the article.

QueefQueen80s · 26/05/2023 18:31

I don't get it either, it says it will be fine to use at hotels and staying at someones house etc but how can they differentiate between that and another household..

Newrumpus · 26/05/2023 18:31

mellongoose · 26/05/2023 16:50

I work away so use mine at two different addresses? How will that work?

Have you read the article?

Doooop · 26/05/2023 18:33

They should do this with amazon prime too. Only the account holder can order to their house. If regular deliveries to the same address are being made then it should be flagged

It explains how to deal with this situation in the article.

The article says you have to pay an extra £4.99 per additional person, so I’d be paying my subscription plus £9.98 a month.

carpool · 26/05/2023 18:40

My son has Netflix and uses it at his flat and at ours when he visits. We almost never watch it so wouldn't be worth paying for it ourselves therefore the service he pays for he won't have access to at ours (or not on the big screen anyway)?

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 26/05/2023 17:05

I wonder how much this will affect their streaming and revenue figures.

I know a lot more people who share their accounts than don't. Many of them pay for the maximum slots so their parents or other close family/friends can use them. These aren't people who will pay for netflix independently because access was a bonus rather than a need.

The reasoning behind why Netflix are doing this is sound but I do wonder if it'll backfire. I also wonder if Amazon (who own Netflix) are using this as a test arena for Prime access.

@littlelegskeepgoing
Amazon doesn't own netflix

"Frequently log in to Netflix in the same location when you're away from your home? You need to create a 'link' between this location and your main residence. Do you have a second home or a holiday home, for example, or do you regularly travel to the same location for work?

Here, you need to make sure you connect to the internet and open the Netflix app on your mobile devices (laptop, phone or tablet) at least once a month when at your main place of residence, and then do this again at your second location whenever you arrive. This will create a link between your home and that location, allowing you to keep using your account in both places."

ErinAoife · 26/05/2023 18:59

My kids' father has installed Netflix on the kids tablet for them to watch it. If Netflix don't allow it, they will lose it on their tablet.

aloris · 26/05/2023 18:59

We have the grandparents on our account, only because they aren't tech-savvy enough to manage their own. We already went from the basic to premium plan years ago so we'd have sufficient "screens" allowances from Netflix so we could cover the grandparents. I'll have to figure out how to set it up so that we can pay for their account going forward, because they definitely won't be able to figure it out themselves. I don't have a problem with it. However, I read that college students will also be expected to have their own accounts and I think that's a bit silly. I mean, obviously you don't want your college student sharing your password around the dorm, but often college students are still financially dependent on their parents and may not earn anything at all, so it's not another income to be tapped for subscriptions.

I think all these tech companies need to make a category of "granny accounts" so we can help our elderly parents get things done even though they can't figure out where is the power button.

mrsbyers · 26/05/2023 19:00

Sky / BT now include Netflix as part of their package so we do that and add a couple of quid extra for HD and two accounts

Yetisrus · 26/05/2023 19:01

I'm confused by all this, I share an account with my ex (have done since we were together) and he pays for the privilege of having more than one profile on the account so we aren't sharing the one profile and doing everything properly.

Does it mean we can't do that anymore and I have to get my own account?

Beneficialchampion2 · 26/05/2023 19:01

You're a parasite OP.

Password sharing is as good as piracy.

We currently have a £10.99 plan for two devices, and it's logged in on our TV, and my Mum's TV. Not used anywhere else or by anyone else.

If they object to that then we'll downgrade to a £6.99 plan and my Mum just won't bother anymore, so their loss ultimately 🤷🏻‍♀️.

I imagine lots of people will do the same, downgrade to a single device and those that didn't want to pay in the first place still won't.

This is exactly my problem. I pay for 2 users at £10.99, I use one and the other is logged in at my (very elderly) parents house basically so mum can watch the Crown.

My parents are not internet savvy enough to be able to set it up themselves and I thought I was playing fair with Netflix with paying for two screens but I now find out I can't drop to one and add a sharer I still have to pay for two at my house and add a further sharer on at £4.99, so in effect I would be paying for 3 screens when no-one else in my house watches it.

I use it so rarely myself I think I'm going to drop down to 1 screen and just log it in at my parents and not use it at home at all.

Loss of revenue for Netflix but I can't justify £15.98 a month for one series of The Crown and maybe 3 or 4 films a year.

bookworm44 · 26/05/2023 19:02

Has anyone had an email from Netflix explaining all this and when does the change come in?

Greyingmumto3 · 26/05/2023 19:04

I pay for 4 screens too . I thought my soon to be going to uni child would be able to use it too but reading this they won’t ?
3 kids each have a screen each and we don’t really bother with it . It will either go or get downgraded if this is the case

No, no

You just need to get back together

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 26/05/2023 19:08

We pay for ours. PILS, BIL, SIL, friend all piggy backed off ours. No more 😆They'll have to pay it themselves now.

I don’t have a problem with this. If you use the service you should pay for the service. The content isn’t free to produce, buy in or broadcast and neither is the software/app development. If you can’t afford it or don’t want to pay for it you don’t watch it. It’s not compulsory.

It sounds like Netflix has factored in a largish number of cancellations as part of this activity so they’re expecting to drop subscribers and revenue, at least temporarily.

As I understand it, they also have some fairly sophisticated modelling which will help spot people using their own phones or iPads to log in at hotels. So they’ll be able to differentiate between people taking their iPad on holiday or a work trip vs password sharing.

AmazonAmazine · 26/05/2023 19:16

I travel a lot, house sit and travel for work or holidays. Will I be able to do this? It’s one location at a time, but I’m very mobile

pointythings · 26/05/2023 19:24

I pay for the premium option so my kids at uni can watch. We're planning to discuss our options because I barely watch it at home and it's not worth the money to me if my kids can't watch. I also now have a really new smart TV which gives me ITV and channel 4 and 5 online, with their back catalogue, so I won't miss Netflix. They'll end up going from getting £15.99 from me to getting £0.

Sissynova · 26/05/2023 19:27

I love some of these comments. Basically a whole load of ‘is that what they want???’ yes, I think it’s safe to assume netflix don’t want people watching when they aren’t paying. Hardly a groundbreaking concept.

How will this work when the 2nd device is a TV?
I spend 3 nights per week at my Grandmother's house. I'm logged into my Netflix there, she doesn't use it though. Its genuinely only me.
