I’m just wondering who on earth cares? Can’t understand why this is such big news.

Because she is the Home Secretary and as such she such not try to get around the law.
No one cares that she was speeding it's the trying to cover it up.
She asked Civil servants to try and book her onto an individual course or online so that her speeding wouldn't get into the press. . That is asking them to break the Civil Service Code. Civil Servants must not get involved in a Ministers private life and Ministers must not ask them to she knows that.
Also there are reports that she asked one of her Special Advisors to tell the press that she didn't get a speeding ticket.
She has shown time and again that she is a terrible Minister. This is just one extra example of that.

A: because she’s the Home Secretary so the hypocrisy is sickening.
B: She’s a nasty piece of work.

Yes. Its definitely both factors for me.

stbrandonsboat · 22/05/2023 17:54

Because she's a corrupt slippery slimy little weasel who shouldn't be in the job.

Hippyhippybake · 22/05/2023 17:54

But if she wanted to avoid it getting into the press why not just pay the fine in the first place?

Rhondaa · 22/05/2023 17:56

'No one cares that she was speeding it's the trying to cover it up'

By seeing if she could do a 1 to 1 course? That isn't 'covering up'. Surely she'd know many civil servants seem a back stabbing bunch so I highly doubt she'd ask one of them to cover anything up.

GOW56 · 22/05/2023 17:57

She asked if she could attend the speed awareness course privately for security reasons. She was told no and therefore decided to take the penalty points instead.
The point is she asked her Civil Servants to organise a private course for her. Thus breaking the Civil Service Code and asking them to .
It is a huge thing if you are a Civil Servant and she would /should know that

RightWhereYouLeftMe · 22/05/2023 17:57

Disclaimer: don't know anything about her politics

She's the Home Secretary..

IamAlso4eels · 22/05/2023 17:57

The klaxon at Tory-bot HQ must be going crackers tonight, they'll be shelling some hellacious overtime out come payday.

Moonmelodies · 22/05/2023 17:50

It's mostly because she's not white.

Rubbish.

RitaCrudgington · 22/05/2023 17:57

It's a big deal because
a) when first told "no" she tried to get her civil servants to get round it
b) She made a complete hash about covering it up rather than coming straight out with a brazen "yes I tried to get a private course "because security" I was told that wasn't possible so took the points instead". It would have been bolllocks of course - a zoom call isn't a security risk, but she would have got away with it.
c) everyone she works with from the teaboy to the PM hates her and is delighted to leak anything unflattering about her

BeforetheFlood · 22/05/2023 17:58

One of the reasons high profile people can request a one on one awareness course is so their participation in a group session isn't a distraction to the other participants, who are there to focus on improving their own driving. I think it was a reasonable and sensible request and if she went about making it in the wrong way I'm not sure it warrants this level of outrage.

(Not making any comment on her politics, policies or personal values, all of which may be up for scrutiny in and of themselves.)

Jagley · 22/05/2023 17:58

Abuse of power
Breaking ministerial code 3 times
Tried to get members of the civil service to get her out of her own mess.

A lot more than a storm in a teacup.

Upholding standards and remaining impartial doesn't make them backstabbers. The government only refers to them as such because the civil service refuses to get embroiled in their dirty work.

PoePoePoePoePoe · 22/05/2023 17:08

She broke the ministerial code. Twice. She was sacked for breaking the ministerial code last year too.

So she’s now broken it three times.

Thats a pretty big fucking deal.

This!

If you don’t understand how big this please begin to educate yourself.

LadyWithLapdog · 22/05/2023 17:59

You get the points off anyway.

The course is instead of a fine. She should’ve paid the fine if she’s too busy or too grand for the course.

The sooner she’s gone, the better.

I really dislike her and her morals but in thie particular case it is a storm in a teacup. She asked if she could attend the speed awareness course privately for security reasons. She was told no and therefore decided to take the penalty points instead.

Asking if she could attend a course privately doesn't seem unreasonable for someone who is the Home Secretary.

We should all have equal treatment when it comes to the law. If she can have a private speed awareness course why can't everybody? It wouldn't work would it, not enough courses, the cost would rocket and maybe sitting down listening to other people's stories is part of the course. I don't know as I've never had to do a speed awareness course but I assume there must be some interaction.

I'm not sure what the security issue is, I've heard the courses are for between 10 and 20 people, I'm sure she is in bigger crowds than that at times and her security seems to cope. I think it would probably be embarrassing for her but that's part of the punishment isn't it.

RightWhereYouLeftMe · 22/05/2023 18:01

she asked her civil servants to intervene to make it happen - she didn’t sort it herself! These are public servants. I’m a civil servant - I’m not employed to dig my boss out of shit she got into in her private life FFS

Exactly! This is not their job at all. She's using civil servants to sort her own life out. That's not what they're there for

Oh bless her, she was doing it for the benefit of other offenders. I wonder why her security is being brought into it?

Rhondaa · 22/05/2023 18:02

'everyone she works with from the teaboy to the PM hates her and is delighted to leak anything unflattering about her'

Exactly. Though I doubt the PM 'hates her' rather the weasley civil servants will indeed be delighted to leak. She should've known better than ask 'is there a private course I could attend?'. How very dare she 🙄.

HarrietPierce · 22/05/2023 18:03

"How on earth could she have taken a speeding awareness course with members of the public."

My husband did his online. Since the pandemic many providers are offering this.

Motnight · 22/05/2023 18:04

Because it is yet another dirty little secret that the government tried to keep from us.

She was also Attorney General at the time.

It’s not a good look for someone who is supposed to be responsible for upholding the law.

That explains why Matt Hancock and Dominic Raab had to go.

Maybe she didn't want to after she asked if they could be put on expenses and was told no.

YANBU. It is a complete non-story and I can't believe that anybody cares in the slightest.
