Is this incredibly racist or am I being sensitive

Have had to nc as incredibly outing.

I enquired about a blossom tree installation in my restaurant, someone got back to me with a quote and I said great what’s his timescales. He let me know a date and I told him it would be suitable but nothing yet agreed.
Next thing I know he says he requires a 50% deposit because he’s ordered the blossom for the tree.
I never asked him to order the blossom, never agreed that the work would actually be done and certainly didn’t agree to give him 50% upfront.

I’ve had to block him as he is continuously ringing and messaging me and is just being plain nasty, to both my husband and I.

I think he’s gone a step too far with this Facebook post though, the reference to scrubbing korma pans and polishing shoes just gets to me, I feel he’s being racist, we have an Indian restaurant but I don’t actually go/work there so he’s obviously made that up to be spiteful.

@slore Are you skidmark?

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 22/05/2023 23:34

OP get the police involved now. This needs to stop. He is busy recruiting others here to defend him
No sane person will look at his comments and say he isnt racist

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 22/05/2023 23:35

@Restaurantlover Hope you are ok

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 22/05/2023 23:36

I think the poster is actually the racist here. If you did agree a sale then this is in you. Be careful this doesn't turn on you. He could do you for defamation of character more than you could do him for racism. Not right. But fact

Agreeing to a sale does not make OP a racist ffs. Skidmark, you have lost it. Give uo FFSS

Hey Skid, Lucy or whatever alias you're using now. This thread has inevitably made it to Tattle (Off Topic) including screenshots of all your deleted posts. The first of which you write your own company name and then proceed to use a string of wonderfully racist usernames. Even if MN deletes this entire thread, Tattle won't do shit. They've seen far worse on their site and you've been immortalised there. Congrats!

@User1432423532 Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke!

Zonder · 23/05/2023 07:45

I've looked at his FB page now. He has no reviews, no likes or comments. Has a little t been deleted?

Anyway he shouldn't have started the order without getting the deposit. That's the point of the deposit.

I wouldn't order something from a FB page with no reviews or comments and the equivalent of a poste restante address.

WisherWood · 23/05/2023 09:02

A lot of his stuff seems to have disappeared now. Tough lesson to learn. It sounds like the OP's communication during this process wasn't brilliant and she wasn't exactly number 1 client. But you don't start work without a deposit - as per PP, that is what the deposit is for.

And then you don't go off on a racist rant on a well-used chat site. Having to deal with slightly awkward customers is unfortunately just part of business. And dealing with the situation politely, without escalating it, is a key business skill. Gobbing off like an EDL poster boy is not going to win you business. Well, not much business anyway. Unless they suddenly start commissioning far right artificial trees.

I’ve dealt with many ‘legit and honest sole traders’. Not one has asked me to pay 50% up front.

And I didn't say anyone should pay 50% upfront.

How much is paid in advance and in arrears is very industry/trade specific in practice. If a customer isn't comfortable with the deposit it is their choice to either negotiate or not proceed, the business in this case shouldn't have started significant work without agreeing terms and receiving the agreed deposit.

GOW56 · 23/05/2023 10:13

wouldn’t find it racist if there was no reference to korma, but it’s that he’s trying to get across a specific message, which is what I find racist.

I agree. It is clearly racist. He is trying to say something about you by alluding to your ethnicity. I don't understand why others have said it is not racist

Not at all. I’ve previously had gardening, electrical and other work done by recommended sole traders. As if happens I have generally been happy with their work. But I wouldn’t have forked out 50% deposit up front, even though they were recommended by trusted friends and they never asked.

I have just paid a £5000 deposit for my new kitchen, an amount that is nowhere near 50%. That company is VAT registered and I looked up their accounts on Companies House (as well as them being highly recommended). Surely it’s common sense not to fork out sums of money in advance without doing a spot of due diligence?

And you'll have lost the 5k if this ltd company decide to go into liquidation. At least with a sole trader you have a chance of getting it back through the courts

Really?! I genuinely thought it was illegal for a dissolved company to keep trading.

They rise from the ashes like a Phoenix.
It's surprising how many company directors have multiple dissolved companies on their record. They also use family members and virtual addresses thinking that they can hide.

Agree.

Regardless of the ins & outs on whether or not OP had 'a contract', if nothing else, this thread is a masterclass on the mental gymnastics some MN'ers absolutely strain themselves on to deny very obvious racist remarks. The All Lives Matter brigade might reveal themselves in subtle ways, but they're generally as thick as two short planks so it's as clear as day who they are.

Hear hear. Absolutely gobsmacked at the deliberate ignorance of some people. Do yourselves a favour at least read all the OP’s posts before commenting.

My point is that £5k is a very small proportion of the overall cost of the job. If I lose it it’s hardly worth bothering. £4k of a £8k job is very different.
