Yes, this is pathetic.

If you had sausages in front of you like this and someone asked you to cut them horizontally would you choose the red line or the green line?

If the sausage was horizontal then the green line!

I sometimes cut them the green way if I am using leftover ones in a baguette!

Green but it is confusing. Maybe just specify cut in half longways?
