Mistake by Tesco - do I tell them

Kedece2410 · 16/05/2023 21:38

So the other day Tesco notified me the van with my order had broken down & my order would probably need rescheduled

2 hours later - it arrived. Replacement driver, very apologetic. All good.

Next morning I receive an email telling me due to an unexpected error my order has been cancelled & they're very sorry & have issued a refund

Today, the full amount has been refunded - £120

My sister is horrified I'm not phoning them to let them know. Everyone else says I'd be mad to

Thoughts??

YABU - Course you should let them know
YANBU - The profits Tesco make, they can afford £120

@Tiddlypomtiddlypom I don't give two shits about how wealthy the 'victim' is, it is fundamentally wrong to keep something that you should have paid for.

I also don't need you to do the maths for me, thanks. I couldn't care less about that percentage.

OP is obviously questioning it themselves, otherwise they wouldn't have posted about it.

😆 I apologise m’lady.

However, the world is a plethora of grey. If you continue to see it quite so black and white, you’ll be shafted right up the self-service check out.

How old are you? Just tell them and pay for your shopping. Deary me.

'Deary me'....how old are YOU?

NikiBear76 · 17/05/2023 14:48

Being honest here, It's their mistake. Why should you take the time out of your day to phone in and resolve this. Quite frankly its like taking a pebble from a beach in the grand scheme of things.

That’s not true. They literally just recharge.

TheBerry · 17/05/2023 15:54

Is it “wrong” to keep the money? Yes.

Do I blame you in the absolute slightest for doing so? Not at all.

I’d do the same tbh.

Haha, ok the m'lady gave me a giggle (which is rare on here!).

I know, seeing things black and white is definitely my worst flaw. I have always been like that and I agree with you about the world being a plethora of grey.

I would call them though (if it were me in OP's situation) because I know that I would feel guilty.

It's not about thinking it's OK to do because Tescos makes such a huge profit, it's about your own personal integrity.
You devalue yourself as a member of society to be deliberately dishonest in matters like this, it's not virtue signalling either to say you would try to fix the mistake.
I don't know exactly why there are so many people with such poor attitudes but it gets worse as time goes on, it's depressing and spreads mistrust.

BooneyBeautiful · 17/05/2023 16:16

LeoDiCapricorn · 16/05/2023 21:56

A few years ago a Tesco van reversed into my mum's garden wall and knocked it over. The disaster of getting it sorted was terrible, they really were horrible.

So keep that money they don't deserve it for how awful they were to my poor mum. Yeah I know it doesn't really work that way. But feck em

I had the opposite experience. A Tesco delivery van hit one of my fence posts and broke it. I rang them, submitted a quotation for the work and they sent me a cheque for the money. No problem at all.

Tesco don't give two shits, they don't know oP. OP can see this as an opportunity to give back though.

WiddlinDiddlin · 17/05/2023 16:27

Mmmm in this instance I'd do nowt and wait for them to take it back.

Only because I think theres a bloody good chance if you try to tell them about it, they'll fuck it up again and take it back twice.

If its not gone after a month then I would ring and say 'er done my accounts and this seems to be from you and isn't right please take it back'.

I've had too many instances of crossed wires and people doing things twice, or one person actioning something then a second person also actioning the same thing, doing stuff before the other thing has finalised etc etc (two lots of frozen dog food last month, then refunds and payments pinging everywhere, total chaos!).

I'd not move it to another account though, that just gets you in more bother when they do try to take it and there aren't the funds for it.

Summerlovin24 · 17/05/2023 16:52

The reason I wouldn't is because their admin is obviously shite. Why would I spend an hour of my time on the phone to some equally useless person to correct THEIR mistake. Jog on
Computer says Noooooo

Why would you spend an hour on the phone to them? Just WhatsApp them and let them sort it.

RobertNotBob · 17/05/2023 18:23

Some interesting moral values on display here. We don't like big supermarkets so it's OK to steal from them? Of course you should tell them. Do you have DCs? What message is this giving them?

Florenz · 17/05/2023 18:30

Supermarkets are shit. They have cost many people their jobs as they moved into selling more and more items that were previously sold in specialist shops. They're ripping people off left right and centre at the moment in the name of "increased cost of living". I don't agree with shoplifting but not pointing out their mistake in your favour is not morally wrong. It's like if you buy a multi-pack of crisps that is advertised as containing 6 bags but actually contains 7. There is no need for people to take the extra bag of crisps back to the store. Because they didn't steal it.

Typicalof · 17/05/2023 18:36

I would send them a written statement via social media private text. Or another way if you can.

I personally hate having money in my account that doesn't belong to me. It would be to stressful waiting for them to request it. That is why all my direct debits leave my account the day after payday.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 17/05/2023 19:05

They’re a lot cheaper than my local independent.

Katieandthekids · 17/05/2023 19:08

Nah whatever. Take it as a win!

CabbagePatchDole · 17/05/2023 19:33

When I was younger the company I worked for paid us all our salary twice over. One girl said we should all say nothing and keep the "bonus". However the company was onto it within days and most of us just paid them back. However the girl who said keep it was in the doodoo because she'd spent it!

Firstttimemama · 17/05/2023 19:34

Never in a million years would I tell them

That happened to me as well years ago. The company told everyone to pay it back and most people did but a few people quit rather than pay it back and the company never pursued them for the money.

I agree.

I couldn't be bothered phoning Tesco up. It's their mistake.

I'd hardly feel like a criminal. They might ask for the money back. Then I'd just send it back.

I don't think a criminal record would happen.

Inthedarkagain · 17/05/2023 22:24

All of the supermarkets have been fleecing us with so called inflation. They have definitely used it as an excuse. I can also confirm they treat their staff like utter shit.

Keep it and if they email you just say you haven't checked your account and didn't notice.

It if it was a small retailer i'd give it back, but not a large one that has been found to be ripping its customers off.
