Mistake by Tesco - do I tell them

Kedece2410 · 16/05/2023 21:38

So the other day Tesco notified me the van with my order had broken down & my order would probably need rescheduled

2 hours later - it arrived. Replacement driver, very apologetic. All good.

Next morning I receive an email telling me due to an unexpected error my order has been cancelled & they're very sorry & have issued a refund

Today, the full amount has been refunded - £120

My sister is horrified I'm not phoning them to let them know. Everyone else says I'd be mad to

Thoughts??

YABU - Course you should let them know
YANBU - The profits Tesco make, they can afford £120

Although reading the updates it does sound like they have looked at it and closed the order. It will probably be as much hassle for them reopening the case to take the money when there’s no order to go with it.

tattychicken · 16/05/2023 21:45

I'd put the £120 aside for a few weeks in case they want it back. Other than that, keep it.

I second this.

Tg2023 · 17/05/2023 09:54

Their mistake it's not on you to correct it; keep the money.
I'm sure a giant company like Tesco aren't going to miss that! 😁

BleakMostly · 16/05/2023 21:42

I'd leave it for now, it would be a huge hassle to get in touch with them about it. They might notice and get back to you anyway? They balance the books on their end I'm sure.

Hardly a huge hassle

Technically it is theft if you don't return the money. It is a mistake that they sent it to you - you aren't allowed to just keep it.

Are you a lawyer? I'm not but I don't think you're right about that. Doesn't there have to be evidence of an intent to permanently deprive. There is no such evidence here.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 17/05/2023 10:00
  • Amazon groceries I've phoned in such a situation so the driver wouldn't get penalised. Howe er, they did not reverse the refund
  • Have also phoned Ocado - they insisted on refunding for inconvenience AND giving a gift voucher

not sure I'd bother with Tesco if I'm being honest

LadyH846 · 17/05/2023 10:01

Keep it. It's their mistake.

Frabbits · 17/05/2023 10:02

Morally it's no different just because it's Tesco compared to Ma and Pa's corner shop. I would call them because it's the right thing to do.

Daydreamer123456 · 17/05/2023 09:18

Pressed send too early but you obviously got the gist.

Personally, I don’t think it’s a generational thing at all, just online shopping wasn’t a thing so didn’t have these issues.

But didn't you know back in the day everyone was honest even politicians?

Thatladdo · 17/05/2023 10:11

Its theft - a criminal offence - are you happy to take the risk?

If you didnt realise then its an oversight or mistake you can rectify if they raise it.

A coin has two sides! 😆

Dagnabit · 17/05/2023 10:18

They may well realise and take it out anyway but if not, keep it. It doesn’t affect anyone else and won’t push up prices. I suspect most people saying you should tell them, are just jealous that they didn’t get free stuff!

LeoDiCapricorn · 17/05/2023 10:19

@CasperGutman they must not have mirrors these delivery drivers ConfusedHmm

People saying getting in touch with Tesco is simple, have you ever really tried? The hassle my mum had getting through and dealing with them for their mistake (knocking over a wall) was horrendous and took so much time and effort

If you raise an issue with Tesco on Twitter concerning refunds, overpayment, delivery orders etc, they will deal with through DMs.

Yes they are super quick on dms

TheBucketWoman · 17/05/2023 10:40

I wouldn’t spend my own time sorting out another persons mistake. Especially when their mistake has benefitted me. It’s up to them to resolve the issue with as little inconvenience to you as possible.

Ridiculous. For me, I just have a moral compass . Joke.

TheBucketWoman · 17/05/2023 10:42

If it’s that easy to contact Tesco then I’m glad to see they will have no trouble contacting the OP when they identify their mistake.

Completely different issue !!! That would be a nightmare, most probably, and an insurance issue with lots of red tape. Calling them about a delivery is different!!!

funinthesun19 · 17/05/2023 10:45

Something like this happened with me. Just before Christmas, my order from The Entertainer was delayed and it looked like it wasn’t coming. No delivery updates from the courier or anything. So I requested a refund and cancelled my order.

It then arrived later that day. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I then received a refund a few days later which I wasn’t expecting. So I got in touch with them and they said please ring us so we can arrange payment. Tried to ring, no answer. Tried to ring, no answer again. I waited about an hour and then it cut off. Waste of bloody time. No shop close by to us and I wasn’t travelling miles just for that especially when I don’t drive. In the end I thought fuck it I’m keeping the money. They never came at me for it. I’m guessing they went to the courier for the money instead.

OP, it’s their mistake. The will cover mistakes like this. It was company error. Just play dumb and say you never saw it return to your account if they say anything. Some people don’t check internet banking every day. I know my dad doesn’t, so he would have absolutely no idea if an unexpected refund dropped in to his account.

Once after my Tesco order had been delivered, in bags, as was the way back then, I unpacked it to find whole bags of groceries that we hadn't ordered. In fact, it looked suspiciously like an order for a dinner party. I called to tell them and they said keep the lot. They weren't the slightest bothered that someone else was missing out - I was but I couldn't do much about that. They did presumably have to deduct the cost of the items from the intended recipients order.

A few months ago I saw a girl running out of our local Tescos with armloads of clothing, towels etc. The security guard chased her for all of 30 seconds, then gave up when another colleague told him to.

I don't think they would be bothered about your £120 to he honest. It's just theceayvit is with a big company- minor losses are factored in.

I'd probably do the same in your shoes. It's not honest but no one is being actually harmed by it and it's their mistake, not yours.

I worked in a supermarket and was always trained to never chase a shoplifter out of the store. One of the security guards at a different branch chased someone out of the store and ended up getting stabbed in the car park. The security guard didn't give up, he probably thought it wasn't worth risking his life for some towels.

Moonlightdust · 17/05/2023 10:47

She should be horrified at the thought you wouldn’t be honest. Each to their own.

Nordicrain · 17/05/2023 10:52

I wouldn't tell them, but I would keep the money aside for a bit incase they discver the mistake.

Tiddlypomtiddlypom · 17/05/2023 10:54

I literally would not worry about keeping it. Their fuck up. I’d feel absolutely no obligation to notify them of their mistake.

I’d consider it payback for all the times they made insane substitutions, like replacing a dozen eggs with a bag of Reese’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Eggs, or the time they decided cider vinegar was a good substitute for a bottle of Henney’s dry cider, or celery was a perfectly sound replacement for daffodils.

I’m glad I’m not as fretful and earnest as some posters. 🤭

Wilberthepig · 17/05/2023 11:04

I once had this with face flannels from ebay

I ordered 6

A parcel with 6 arrived

Then another a few days later

And another a few days after that

Rinse and repeat until I had 36 of the bloody things

I messaged them via ebay, and I got a snotty message back saying I was to return them

Fair enough-send me a label and I will

Nope-i was to return them at my own
expense-which was more than what I'd paid for the first set

I refused and told them they either paid postage or they could come and pick them up

I still have them-3 years later-i never heard another thing from them

I'd at least try to get hold of them to see what they say

I agree with this. Keep it to one side and if they contact you then you can say, honestly, that you thought there might he an error and had put the money aside. I know they’re thieving, profiteering bastards but that won’t help you if they get angsty about it.
