The post was "is this suitable for a wedding" (classic), but one of the reasons the dress was unsuitable was that it was too 'sparkly'.

I've bought a sparkly outfit to wear as a guest for a wedding, and now I've got The Fear that it's too much.

It's this top, with a similar colour (blush/gold) midi length gauze skirt (ballerina style). And I plan to wear it with a box navy jacket for the service (and navy suede shoes): https://www.phase-eight.com/product/dhara-sequin-blouse-502166453.html#navAjax=true&imageType=model&is=true&sz=60&start=60&q=sequin&isSecondPage=false&pid=502166453&pos=69

The bride will be wearing Ivory, and the bridesmaids are in terracotta. Have I misjudged it?

Dhara Sequin Blouse |

For a more relaxed take on party dressing, our Dhara blouse is the answer. Embellished with sparkling sequins, this piece is a easy, standout separate with plenty of style impact.

Is it an evening 'do'? If so, don't think there'd be an issue. May be unsuitable for a daytime bash.

PieMashLiquor · 15/05/2023 23:19

Ah no you'll look lovely! Got a pic of the skirt?!

NewAnon · 15/05/2023 23:20

I will be going to the daytime bit - but I'd anticipated wearing a boxy navy jacket for the ceremony at least, so you'd only see a sliver of sequins down the front, and around the neckline.

But the old adage "if you have to ask..." probably rings true, I just hadn't even considered it'd be edge-case!

I’m not even into sparkly in the slightest and even I like that!

The skirt is years old, so not online anymore, it's a bit like this, but NO SEQUINS, and a darker more tawny/blush colour.

I wouldn't for a spring/summer day guest

HeidiUpTheMountain · 15/05/2023 23:24

I think the main objection to the other one was that it was sparkles on top of very short length, tight booby bodice and overall clubby look. Your top is elegant and doesn’t fall into those categories. As long as the skirt doesn’t make it look like a child’s princess costume, then I think you’re all good.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 15/05/2023 23:24

I think the skirt with the top makes it look too bridal.

HeidiUpTheMountain · 15/05/2023 23:25

Ah, now I’ve seen the skirt, maybe it does look a bit princess costume, especially if it’s church for the ceremony.

Interesting, why not Spring/Summer particularly (it's an early autumn wedding, but I'm curious)?

I mean, I would like to wear a princess costume, but I realise someone else's wedding is not the day for it 😁

Though my skirt is far more tawny in colour, and heavier fabric, less wafty (but still gauzy) which may make a difference... More this colour: https://www.shein.co.uk/Solid-Paperbag-Waist-Pleated-Skirt-p-13109080-cat-1732.html?skucode=I16aonzejdcr&url_from=ukadplasw2212052272236222M_GPM&cid=19229000832&setid=&adid=&pf=GOOGLE&gclid=Cj0KCQjwsIejBhDOARIsANYqkD1qIfsvuEJ5RQfTqg_tzltwSPRSWtevwYWyih6kjygGZ4Xna069qwoaAoA8EALw_wcB
But longer, and not pleated.

I think that it's too pale, especially as the bride is in Ivory. However if you keep the navy jacket on during the day, it'll be fine. If it's all you've got. The skirt is a colour and style that some would pick for their bridesmaids.

ALittleBitAlexa · 15/05/2023 23:33

I think it's absolutely fine, speaking as a soon-to-be bride. If it was maxi it would be too much but it's a midi skirt, it's making an effort but not OTT

Ponoka7 · 15/05/2023 23:34

How different is it to the shade of terracotta the bridesmaids are in? You're normally told the colours so you can pick a different palette.

Marzipananne · 15/05/2023 23:34

I like it. I wouldn't mind you wearing it to my wedding. I'd be pleased you made a stylish effort and picked something so nice

Aprilrosesews · 15/05/2023 23:34

I think the skirt makes it look bridal IMO. They are nice separately but the skirt material is similar to ballgown wedding dresses and my personal opinion is sequins/sparkle should be reserved for the bride

I would be totally fine if someone wore that to my wedding 🤷‍♀️ maybe it’s bride dependant but I wouldn’t give it a second thought!

The top? To me sparkles says winter/Christmas. I think that's a personal thing though

Entirely fair, I think the only time I've worn sequins in my adult life is at Christmas too.

But I do know other people wear them more liberally.
