A huge (genuinely huge) spider ran over my shoulder tonight. I am not scared of spiders from a distance - as long as I can see them and they're in no danger of touching me. This little f*cker ran over my naked shoulder from some clothes I'd picked up to put away 😭. I've never felt fear like it and could not control my response (screaming, crying, shaking - total terror). DH squished it with a slipper and flushed it then gave me a sugary drink to calm down! DD 8 weeks old just lay in her cot wide eyed and not bothered in the slightest by my screaming.

Honestly just needed to write this all down and for people to know what happened 😂 I am still itching all over after a shower!!

YABU - they are more scared of us
YANBU - he deserved the death sentence

YABU!

I don’t like spiders at all and used to cry whenever I saw one 😬 When my DD was a toddler she was REALLY interested in bugs and wanted to make friends with them all. I didn’t want to pass on my fear to her and for her to see me falling apart whenever I saw a spider. So I worked really hard at keeping calm and being rational when I saw one.

I still don’t like them. I still wouldn’t pick one up. But I don’t kill them, there’s no need. I either ask DH or the kids to remove them (bug-loving DD is now a bug-loving young adult). Or I put a box or cup over it, slide something underneath and then evict it.

Plus, they eat flies and flies, whilst not scary to me, are very good at finding things to lay their eggs on. Maggots are amazing and useful in medicine but I don’t want them in my bin or on my dog’s food. So the spiders can stay and do their job as long as I don’t have to see them very often.

AdoraBell · 15/05/2023 22:33

YANBU the bastard thing with too many legs deserved to meet the slipper.

YABU. I had a massive spider run over my head. It startled me and I brushed it off. I was gutted when someone else in the room stamped on it and killed it. Poor spider.

Jijithecat · 15/05/2023 22:36

You can't help your fears but the spider most definitely did not deserve to die.

waterlego · 15/05/2023 22:37

Other creatures that have been in my house that I was unable to deal with myself include a slowworm and a frog. Amazing creatures again, and I wouldn’t hurt them, but just…<shudder>

YouWonJayne · 15/05/2023 22:38

I’d have killed it too.

SirenSays · 15/05/2023 22:39

I don't know why I clicked I knew it would be about a spider. Now I'm itchy! Is it on me? I feel like its on me!!

StarDolphins · 15/05/2023 22:41

YABU

Fairowing · 15/05/2023 22:46

Too many people kill poor spiders. Ones like this have hard enough time not getting eaten and overcome by those parasite spiders that look like Daddy Long Legs and are almost invisible.
Buy one of those insect hotels and put it in your garden in memory of this poor spider to make amends.

Bk1000 · 15/05/2023 22:47

I used to have an extreme spider phobia and although it’s much better now I would still be completely freaked out by something like this, I wouldn’t kill the spider after it was off but I could understand it accidentally being killed in the panic. I find it strange the way people think it’s okay to kill spiders just because if the way they look, they are completely harmless, killing them is a massive over reaction

FrenchTrellis · 15/05/2023 22:51

YANBU

Fellow arachnophobe here. Had to put my car through the car wash last week when a spider nest hatched on my back windscreen and the back was covered in spiders. I would have been similarly traumatized by your situation!!

PToosher · 15/05/2023 22:51

I'm not particularly scared of spiders, I'd just rather not have them on me.

One night I was in bed alone, partner away, and there was a massive spider on the ceiling. I thought 'yeah whatever, let it be'. I read for a bit, by which time it had disappeared, and I turned out the light.

About 10 minutes later as I was just dozing I felt something pushing into my armpit, and I mean pushing. It was this bloody great spider that had come down from the ceiling. I made some freaked out noises and slapped at it, unfortunately squishing it on myself.

BloodandGlitter · 15/05/2023 22:52

YABU fear isn't an excuse to kill something.

Zofloraqueen27 · 15/05/2023 22:54

If it comes into my space and has more legs than me - it’s dead. No reprieves.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 15/05/2023 22:54

YANBU any spider that comes into
my house is killed on site. Can't sleep if I know there's one in the house. I put conkers in corners of the room to keep them out, which madly does seem to work, but any that dare to come near have to go.

baloosbaloos · 15/05/2023 22:56

@PToosher oh god this is the worst thing I’ve ever read on the internet. Oh god. Oh god. JESUS. JESUS WEPT.

OP YANBU, I generally don’t kill spiders but I always want to, they are physically unbearable to me. I don’t care how nice their personalities are. They are nightmare creatures.

Flowertight · 15/05/2023 22:57

Grow up.

HowToLearnToLoveMyself · 15/05/2023 22:58

Yanbu

All spiders even flies get swatted in this house. Thankfully its rare we see one

OrlandointheWilderness · 15/05/2023 23:02

You didn't kill it, your DH did. I think you are absolved. He, on the other hand....!
I can't cope with them but I don't kill them. I just avoid whatever part of the house they are in until they disappear. Yes, this has resulted in me showering at my parents house for a week. They thought the hot water wasn't working because I was too embarrassed to tell them it was because a spider was using the bathroom...

Similar thing happened to me at school I’ve felt bad about it for 25 years.

Wolfiefan · 15/05/2023 23:05

@Chilledtorybeats I actually walked out of the room I was so upset. Poor thing. It was HUGE and really amazing to look at. Even worse they didn’t kill it at first stamp. I can’t understand why anyone would want to kill spiders.

xabia · 15/05/2023 23:11

There's a great little book called 'Don't Squish Me!'
Read it and you might change your mind.

Mars27 · 15/05/2023 23:14

Of course YANBU!

I don't understand for the life of me this adoration and pity people feel for spiders. Reading some of the replies here you'd think the OP killed a fluffy bunny rabbit .
