A huge (genuinely huge) spider ran over my shoulder tonight. I am not scared of spiders from a distance - as long as I can see them and they're in no danger of touching me. This little f*cker ran over my naked shoulder from some clothes I'd picked up to put away 😭. I've never felt fear like it and could not control my response (screaming, crying, shaking - total terror). DH squished it with a slipper and flushed it then gave me a sugary drink to calm down! DD 8 weeks old just lay in her cot wide eyed and not bothered in the slightest by my screaming.

Honestly just needed to write this all down and for people to know what happened 😂 I am still itching all over after a shower!!

YABU - they are more scared of us
YANBU - he deserved the death sentence

YABU (unless you're going to drip-feed that you're in Australia or something, in which case squash away!).

Seasonofthewitch83 · 17/05/2023 11:45

I disagree that they are scared of us. I had one continue to climb my bed and run towards my head - he wasn't a big ugly house spider so i just kept flicking him away, but he kept trying to come back!

I might as well have been for the size of him!!
No, I joke. He was massive but UK massive. I'm feeling a bit better about it all now but still keep itching at the thought

I'm severely arachnophobic but I couldn't kill one and it really upsets me when others do.

Fortunately we rarely see them in our house, when we do DH puts them out.

Nutterjacks · 17/05/2023 12:47

I completely understand your phobia as I am the same. One morning, I was sitting enjoying my morning coffee when I could feel tickling on my arm, thought it was just an itch so reached inside my dressing gown sleeve to scratch, that's when I freaked out. I immediately disrobed and the biggest bloody spider dropped on the floor. I was traumatised for hours. Then, a few days later, was just drifting off to sleep and felt tickling once again on my arm - disregarded the idea of another spider and fell asleep. When I woke up in the morning, pulled back the duvet and there was a another huge (dead) spider that I'd laid on in the night and squished.
I now shake my dressing gown before putting it on in the mornings and have a mesh screen on the bedroom window.

itsmylife7 · 17/05/2023 12:51

yabu no need to kill it.
you get a glass and put it over the spider then envelope, or similar under the glass....take both outside and spider is free.

Mardiarse · 17/05/2023 12:56

Yabu to kill another living creature needlessly.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 17/05/2023 13:08

Absolutely disgusting to kill an innocent creature for no reason. People like you make me very annoyed. Just put it outside FFS

kingtamponthefurred · 17/05/2023 13:08

Your house is your territory. Anything you did not invite into your house is fair game. I reluctantly tolerate spiders in the garden but not in the house.

Bitteralmond · 17/05/2023 17:07

To all the people, who are claiming to be much better humans than the OP because they catch the spider and put it outside, house spiders die outside (as I said upthread) so you are just giving it a slower death. I usually get my DH to put them outside, but I know I am being totally illogical! I suppose the only thing that can be said for it, is it may give a robin a tasty snack.

Mimilamore · 17/05/2023 17:50

Have the horrors if one actually touches me but can look from a distance. Wouldn't kill one though as I am being a bit of a dick, not the spiders fault. Glass and card and outside for them here...

JulieHoney · 17/05/2023 17:54

Spiders are on our side in the war against flies. I am thoroughly Team Spider, and no, I don’t put them outside, I am glad to have them.

Frustratedwithbadlegaladviceontheinternet · 17/05/2023 17:58

YANBU at all

Not necessarily. They can find a mild, sheltered spot outside and be perfectly fine.

sonjadog · 17/05/2023 19:10

I hate it when people kill animals like this. I find it really upsetting. It was just going about its business and you decided to kill it just because... Capture it and put it out the window next time. Don't end its life.

Oldnproud · 17/05/2023 19:12

YABU

PrincessHoneysuckle · 17/05/2023 19:19

I get my dogs to sort them out.Im terrified of them

Ollifer · 17/05/2023 19:30

Yabu. I'm petrified of spiders but never killed one never will.

The Natural History Museum seems to think differently.

'The natural habitat of the spiders includes caves and hollow trees but, of course, they readily adapt to buildings.'

I generally just leave them be in my house. We just ignore each other.

I have just realised that both of the posts I've replied to are from you. Why did you come back 5 hours later to comment again? Perhaps I actually did amuse you

why did I return to a thread I was on? Why did you? What a bizarre question!

Well because it's my thread, so I came back to see all the replies directed at me. So not sure why you did

Eh? Is there a rule that you can only visit a thread once and to come back is an incredibly weird thing to do? Are you on another planet? It’s a chat forum - clue is in the chat forum bit.

Dotjones · 18/05/2023 13:36

YANBU, you should always kill spiders. If you don't they'll just grow, breed and come back. Better to just kill them and be done with it.

The way I look at it is if they paid rent, say once a week I came home and there was a £50 note on the floor with the spider next to it, I might allow them to stay. Until then they can fuck off.

AnwenDolly · 18/05/2023 14:06

YABVU.

Spiders in the UK will do you no harm and are very beneficial.

They don't like human skin (our normal body temperature feels very hot on their little spider feet). So, if you find one on you, it got there by accident. They will not deliberately crawl on you.

Although there are a small number of spiders that bite, you have to work quite hard to persuade one to do so for two reasons. The first is explained in the paragraph above. The second is that it takes a lot of energy and spider resources to bite and produce enough venom to inject human skin. They have no incentive to do it for fun. In the highly unlikely event that you get bitten, it is unlikely to be more than a mild discomfort.

The big hairy house spiders are little poppets. We had one living in our bathroom for several years. She did absolutely no harm and we felt a bit sad when she eventually died (of natural causes).

Now for the best bit. We had a big problem with clothes moths a few years ago. The little bastards were ruining clothes, carpets, towels and other materials. We tried everything to get rid of them (I'm not sentimental about clothes moths). Someone recommended that we stop putting spiders outside and wait for the occupants of spiders' webs to leave before clearing them away (that was the hardest bit). We took that advice and we are now substantially moth free. Thank you spiders.

Erm... don't you realise it's the house spiders that leave change down the back of sofas for us to find?
