To have killed the beast?

A huge (genuinely huge) spider ran over my shoulder tonight. I am not scared of spiders from a distance - as long as I can see them and they're in no danger of touching me. This little f*cker ran over my naked shoulder from some clothes I'd picked up to put away 😭. I've never felt fear like it and could not control my response (screaming, crying, shaking - total terror). DH squished it with a slipper and flushed it then gave me a sugary drink to calm down! DD 8 weeks old just lay in her cot wide eyed and not bothered in the slightest by my screaming.

Honestly just needed to write this all down and for people to know what happened 😂 I am still itching all over after a shower!!

YABU - they are more scared of us
YANBU - he deserved the death sentence

YANBU
YOU didn't kill it. Something similar happened to me and I have never known fear like it. For the people saying 'grow up', I am in my fifties and in all other ways quite a strong, no-nonsense person. Phobias are very hard to control, when it happened to me I trapped the spider in my teeshirt to stop it roaming and it fell very damaged to the floor so my DH killed it.

I have since had hypnotherapy to get over the phobia but it has not entirely worked. Even if you catch them and take them outside, they die as true house spiders do not survive outside.
Killing something because of the way it looks is horrible, but on the other hand I have rescued screaming bees from the clutches of garden spiders. If the spider was bigger than you, it would do horrible things to you, no doubt about it.

CabbagePatchDole · 15/05/2023 23:22

I like spiders you bladdy murderers.

mainsfed · 15/05/2023 23:28

Death sentence? Are you trying to be funny? Poor spider.

Fairowing · 15/05/2023 22:46

Too many people kill poor spiders. Ones like this have hard enough time not getting eaten and overcome by those parasite spiders that look like Daddy Long Legs and are almost invisible.
Buy one of those insect hotels and put it in your garden in memory of this poor spider to make amends.

What are these horrible fuckers? My house has loads of them and they really disturb me ever since I saw one eat a giant house spider 😭

Mrmojorising71 · 15/05/2023 23:59

You are absolutely not being unreasonable.

MaydinEssex · 16/05/2023 00:06

I have arachnophobia, but I would never want a spider killed just because of my fear

For those saying grow up, congrats on having no phobia that would induce panic like I had last night! Adults have phobias too.

I'm proud to have recently cured my fear of needles through the necessity of daily IVF meds, but spiders are a different ball game. Unfortunately, DH is also scared of them, so neither of us would be brave enough to evict!

@rickandmorts
DF who is more of a spider expert than me (due to phobia!) says they are a parasite breed and that’s why they eat the poor house spiders - apparently they go after the pregnant ones too

Flowertight · 16/05/2023 17:35

You started off by claiming you’re not scared of spiders - this is now apparently a phobia. Ok….

bondsy · 16/05/2023 17:42

I'm scared of spiders but there really was no reason to kill it. Just put it outside. What was it going to do to you?

bondsy · 16/05/2023 17:43

Buy this for next time if you don't want to touch them

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 16/05/2023 17:51

I have arachnophobia, I would have felt the same as you. But I don't kill them, I know it's not their fault I have an irrational fear.

I often freak out and run away and then start yelling 'don't kill it! Put it outside!' - or 'put it in the garage!' in winter - at DP while trying to rub my own skin off to get rid of the feeling of legs.

My experience of the fear you describe was walking into a garden and seeing a massive spider in a web. When I left, the sun was behind me and I forgot and WALKED THROUGH THE WEB! I was running laps of the garden screaming 'getitoffgetitoffgetitoff' while my DP stared at me open mouthed. Then I stop drop and rolled on the lawn. Still screaming. Absolutely no control over any of it.

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 16/05/2023 18:15

I too am afraid but don't like seeing them killed. I send DH in but if it's in a tricky place he'll get the hoover out. We usually make a big song and dance about Daddy "helping Mr.Spider" by taking him back to his house - outside! DD gets to wave goodbye to Mr.Spider in his glass, and we have a chat about how lovely the spiders are. I really don't want her to pick up on my fear.

apart from when she was in school and an Aragog landed in the bath. Even DH was like fuck that shit, hoover. Sorry Aragog

It's a rubbish fear to have. Mice I'm fine, snakes I'm fine. If there was "snake season" and your home got invaded by harmless snakes a few months, or you'd occasionally find a snake in the bath I'd have no trouble at all!

I can handle money spiders, and remove a cellar spider with a glass at an absolute push. Anything else, nope.

During 'the season' we spray the house with natural repellent which helps a bit. Although this year the repellent may end up being the new kitten!

Poor spider.

I don't much like them but I couldn't kill one. I catch them in a pint glass with a coaster on top and let them go outside.

I think you rather wanted everyone to be amused by your little anecdote didn’t you…,

It's hard to explain but if I can see the spider and it cannot touch me, I'm not scared of it and can get quite close to them.
The phobia is them touching me (or me touching them). I know of people who can't even be in the same room as a spider, I'm not like that. I have honestly never felt terror like I did when it ran on me!!

Not really as it wasnt amusing in the slightest, it was truly awful. I spend a lot of time on mumsnet and this was traumatic for me so I wanted to write it down.

This is definitely my way of coping. Along with mumsnet I have told multiple friends and family about my ordeal!
