To not go to the job interview because they accused me of lying

I had a job interview booked recently, the day before my grandma passed away. I was really close to her and i would not have been great in the interview the next day.

I emailed and called prior explaining what had happened and if possible i would like to rearrange, they agreed all was fine. Rearranged for this Wednesday, but I got a call today saying, sorry to hear about your mother in law. I said it wasn’t my mother in law it was my grandma.

5 minutes later i got a call from the woman saying i’m sure you said it was your mother in law, you said you have to support your partner. I said no it’s my grandmother i don’t even had a partner. She replied and said no you said mother in law, we have recorded calls and if we listen back and you said mother in law the interview would be off the table.

At this point i was quite irritated and I felt upset that she would imply i would lie about losing my grandma. She ended the call saying will I actually turn up to the interview if all is okay? I feel like its not a good start to begin with

Sorry about your grandma.

The lady that you spoke to sounds awful, but is she the actual hiring manager, or somebody from HR? If she’s the manager then I can see why you wouldn’t want to go to the interview. If she’s somebody from HR and if it’s a large company then I wouldn’t write the job off. Having worked for a couple of fairly large companies in the past, I’ve had very little interaction with the recruiting team once I’ve started in the job.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do x

I would go to the interview and if they bring it up say you'd be interested in hearing the recording with them
You don't have to accept any job but you don't have to accept being called a liar
I'm sorry for your loss and the added distress this must have caused

This

Whiteroomjoy · 15/05/2023 22:08

Plus, I don’t think they could record calls without informing you they’re recorded first . I think that’s breaking the law to record you without consent.

CabernetSauvignon · 15/05/2023 22:09

It would be a hell of a coincidence, but is it possible they mixed you up with someone else?

greenplantspinkflowers · 15/05/2023 22:10

Got to the interview and smash it - when they ask if you have any questions, ask them why they think it's ok to treat an interviewer like that and cause them of lying.

Conkersinautumn · 15/05/2023 22:10

Don't go. Write an email and do lean in to how distressing be sure to layout what she said even about the recording.

Honestly . I know you won't give two shits if she apologises as clearly her word is trash, but I'd go seeking one just to know she squirmed even a moment. Those who accuse others of lying really hate being caught at it.

Whiteroomjoy · 15/05/2023 22:11

Sorry, ended too soon, so if she also said that I’d put it in the letter to say she has told you your calls and conversation were recorded without your express permission and that’s breaking the law
its only legal, as far as I understand, where it is for “personal use”. If it’s being done for the business it’s not personal and she’s is breaking the law.

Anon133 · 15/05/2023 22:12

I’m really sorry to hear about your loss 😢

There is no way I would attend an interview with them after that, how disrespectful before you’ve even potentially joined the company!

I would go one further and not respond to any future contact they make, you don’t need the added stress.

Soapyspuds · 15/05/2023 22:12

Interviews are a two way process. They have failed big time.

Tell them you are withdrawing your application.

NewbieoneKinewbie · 15/05/2023 22:14

holy cow.
that sounds awful and hugely unprofessional.

I had some iffy conversations with HR in my current job over my offer, to the point that I nearly backed out of the job. Alarm bells were ringing.
I still took the job, and I've found it a horrible working environment to be in.

Sometimes red flags should be taken good notice of. I would absolutely complain about the way their company is being portrayed, too.

SecretSwirrel · 15/05/2023 22:15

Massive red flag OP. Don’t go. What’s this employer going to be like when you need to call in sick etc?

Life is too short for that s#*t. Sorry about your grandma.

Soproudoflionesses · 15/05/2023 22:18

Interviews are a 2 way thing op - do you actually want to work for such a nasty company?

Rabbitsea · 15/05/2023 22:19

Thank you everyone for your condolences. I did email using what @MissBPotter said so thank you for that.

Surprisingly i got an email back stating it was a miscommunication on her part, she is very sorry, although calls are recorded. My initial phone call wasn’t…….She still said she is sure i said it was my mother in law.

The hiring manager is very impressed with my CV and is really keen to meet me….

It has left a bad taste in my mouth and its not a job i am desperate for

There's no way I would want to work for them after that but I'd pretend I did and get them to listen back to the recording and email me to confirm that I most certainly was NOT bloody well lying, and then dump that individual in the biggest pile of shit going.

ThereIbledit · 15/05/2023 22:22

Just seen your update. Oh aye, all calls are recorded eh, oops except for the one that proves you're not lying, , what an absolute crock of shit.

I would also think they are in shit for GDPR reasons if they record calls without telling you, so which is it?

Vitriolinsanity · 15/05/2023 22:25

Talk about a non apology apology. How convenient that that particular call did not get recorded.

Rabbitsea · 15/05/2023 22:25

And she said i think there was some confusion between us. No, I was not confused. I clearly stated my grandma passed away. Ugh anyway I’ve decided i won’t be going. Knowing me I’d probably start blubbering in the interview

Consider it a lucky escape OP, who wants to work somewhere that treats you like that before you've even got the job.

dogsarelife · 15/05/2023 22:26

I wouldn't go

weirdoboelady · 15/05/2023 22:27

Well, I would explain why if you decide not to go. I don't think that PA should get away with that behaviour.

Crushmonsters · 15/05/2023 22:28

I’m very sorry for your loss.

With regards to this exchange, I think they have done you a favour. You have learnt something of enormous intangible value about this organisation - that they are morally dubious and very possibly do not treat their staff well. Why would you ignore that important information and go work for them?

IWantRebeccasConfidence · 15/05/2023 22:38

@Rabbitsea very sorry about your grandma.
In rpsonse to your post about the email reply, I call bullshit on them. They do have the initial recording, of course they do. They have listened to it and seen you we’re correct and then listened to the subsequent phonecall and seen how Shitly you were treated and are trying to save face.
They really are crap.

IWantRebeccasConfidence · 15/05/2023 22:40

Oh and if it was an email back from the person you spoke to, it’s even more dodgy. She has listened and realised she has fucked up and not told anyone. On this case I would email everyone in the company I could find and give the dates and times of teh phoned calls and what has happened, if it’s just her that replied she is fucking lying.

Endlesssummer2022 · 15/05/2023 22:42

What an awful organisation but you dodged a bullet. Sorry for your loss.

iklboo · 15/05/2023 22:52

Yours wasn't recorded my arse. It sounds like she's deleted it to cover up for her massive incompetence.
