Am I ruining the holiday?

DP has not said as much but I just feel bad.

We spent a lot of money on a much needed holiday as we’ve been super stressed - we booked a really remote, hot location with the plan being nothing but sunbathing.
We’ve got here and it’s freezing cold, and it’s expected to be until we leave. I feel gutted because a) we spent a lot of money, b) there’s literally nothing else to do and c) he suggested other locations that I said no to because I have been before, and I should’ve gone for them as they’re really hot right now.

I keep mentioning the weather, DP keeps telling me to “make the most of it”, “it’s done now”, “it’s out of our control” etc but I just hate being cold and there’s literally nothing else to do. He told me off for looking at the weather and told me not to look again. But I just am so annoyed. Also gutted as I packed only dresses.

Also, I really wanted a holiday for us to just get away from everything as we’ve been so stressed. I said let’s just put our phones down for the week, and let’s not talk about anything going on at home that’s stressful, and let’s talk about different stuff, but he keeps scrolling each time I even walk 2 metres away. He said I put too much pressure on the holiday by saying this.
I then got upset during breakfast as he wasn’t really saying much and he said he felt pressured to make conversation. He also said he’d had 3 hours sleep and I wasn’t being understanding.

I just feel like a misery guts but I can’t help but be upset, and I don’t feel like he’s understanding. Am I unreasonable?

Buy a jumper and get a taxi to somewhere to catch a bus. You'll just have to do other things than sunbathe.

We did this last year ended up in a bit of spain that should have been pleasantly warm and was effing freezing. We ended up booking a night in another lovely hotel in a city a train ride away - just to do something different. Best bit of the holiday.

Greece in May is not a hot location to sunbathe. It is spring, the average temperature is 22 and it is variable.

redbrow · 15/05/2023 11:37

Buy a jumper/ leggings/trainers.
Ask at the hotel for bus timetables.
Get a bus to nearest town( museums shops etc)

PaintingTheSky · 15/05/2023 11:40

At the moment as I type... The lowest temp in Greece is 17 degs and cloudy sun, remember it's temp is always recorded in shade temps, rather than in sun temps.
The highest temp is 31 degs and sunny.
17 is cool enough for a cardigan, but not freezing.
Ask the hotel reception about local buses, get some maps and go sightseeing. Greece is wonderful for historical culture. Find some tavernas and cafés along the way for food and drink.
There's no reason to sit inside being miserable.

I had a similar experience with a greek island in September... when it literally rained for the entire week....[well apart from the tornado]. We ended up watching the Ryder Cup in the hotel communal area (I hate watching sport/hubby loves watching all sport, but I got quite into it!) and old episodes of Only Fools and Horses in various bars along the seafront... as that was pretty much all there was to do (apart from a day trip to another island on a ferry, which was cheap as chips and quite good fun - as well as a change of scenery!) We didn't have a lot of cash to splash, but we made the most of it - and still laugh about it.... 20+years later. Please try and enjoy it.

HermioneWeasley · 15/05/2023 11:42

We had this in Tunisia once. We had a LOT of sex and played a lot of table tennis. We also booked a driver and did some day trips.

BirbFriend · 15/05/2023 11:42

We had this in lanzarote a few years ago. Forecast 25, and it was 16 most of the week.

We hired a car, drove around the island, went hiking, went to lots of local places of interest, and drank a lot of beer in bars.

If it's not sunbathing weather then whingeing isn't going to change that, you have to just make the best of the weather you've got.

Are there no tourist tat shops where you can buy a couple of cheap hoodies?

YouveGotAFastCar · 15/05/2023 11:43

Yeah, you are really, aren't you.

It's understandable to be upset, but it's Greece, not Mars, and your problems are solvable.

You know the weather is rubbish, so constantly mentioning it won't help. You don't want to be cold - go find some trousers to buy. Explore a local town. It might not be what you wanted to do, but you didn't want to sit inside looking out of the window either, you could have done that at home. Go find some interesting places to eat. Do something.

Greece has ruins everywhere, they're fun to explore. People watch. Get a car, or a scooter. Take a boat trip, they'll run even in the rain.

newjobnewstartihope · 15/05/2023 11:46

You don't mention whether you have kids but if that was me I'd prob just get pissed

Chypre · 15/05/2023 11:47

Not that it is a competition, but last year I was unlucky enough to be in Greece during lethal scorcher of +43 degrees... It was meant to be hot, but that was BOILING. Sea was like warm piss and absolutely didn't help. Ended up sleeping during the day and moving around after sunset mostly - wasn't the worst! Still had fun.

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/05/2023 11:48

Umm YABU for expecting a hot beach holiday in early May in Greece.

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/05/2023 11:49

Also even the smallest Greek Island have interesting stuff to look at.

Get a local bus timetable, jump on a bus to the main town and go sight seeing - the country is bursting with archaeology and interesting sights.

Bluemuf · 15/05/2023 11:50

There must be something to do, even if it's going for a walk and explore a bit which would be my preference over sunbathing anyway

Read your book indoors, play some games. That's still a holiday to me, things you wouldn't usually have time to do.

You can't change the weather but you can change your response to it

TheChosenTwo · 15/05/2023 11:50

Another vote for a tipsy bar crawl!

Barstools123 · 15/05/2023 11:51

Are you in Crete? Temperature says same as where I am in London right now and it is CHILLY. Sorry op sounds shit, I'd be gutted too.

I would buy a jumper, jeans, trainers and cheap t-shirts and just do what you can to salvage it. Read, board games, cards, drink. Even watch movies!! Wander, drink coffee

river2 · 15/05/2023 11:52

it's 29 degrees and sunshine in Crete today, so you can't be there!

Pipsquiggle · 15/05/2023 11:52

YABVVVVU

Stop moaning about things you can't control. Yes it's disappointing and it would have been better if there was better weather but you cannot do anything about it.
Get it on with it. Eat, read & drink wine - that's what you do. Go for a walk / run / gym. Just stop complaining.

If you wanted guaranteed 'hot' in May you should not have booked Europe.
You should have gone to Africa or the Middle East (Marrakech, Cairo, Abu Dhabi, Dubai - all above 30 today).

I was going to say the same - mid-May isn't the right time of year for a roasting hot beach holiday.

It sounds like maybe OP is pissed off with herself for not doing her research 😬

river2 · 15/05/2023 11:54

not sure why the previous poster thinks it's chilly in Crete today?!

Am I ruining the holiday?
Dishwashersaurous · 15/05/2023 11:56

Agreed that Greece in May is not guaranteed hot beach weather at all

Op needs to accept that she made a mistake and make the best of it

Bellavida99 · 15/05/2023 11:56

Why has he had only 3 hours sleep? Surely one thing you can do is catch up on sleep to feel relaxed and happy. You must be able to hike, visit local restaurants etc. even if you don’t want to hire a car. Or buy some jeans and a hoody and hire scooters.

Sissynova · 15/05/2023 12:01

Also you took a risk and when for a cheap out of season beach holiday. Roll of the dice.

Stravaig · 15/05/2023 12:05

You're a grown woman, OP. Why is it DP's job to manage your disappointment? He's already managing his own feelings, and doing a good job by the sound of it. Especially as his preferred destinations were overruled by you.

If you don't start making the best of it, you're going to have relationship problems to deal with on top of cooler-than-expected weather and lack of imagination. How is it even possible to be bored on a short visit to Greece 🤯

BellaJuno · 15/05/2023 12:07

If it was me, I’d have one last moan to get it all off my chest then not mention it again. You can choose to make the most of it or you can choose to wallow in self-pity.

crackofdoom · 15/05/2023 12:07

I get it OP. Someone once said to me "Greece is horrible when it's crap weather, it's too much like reality" Grin

I'm assuming you're in holiday accommodation set up for the heat, too- tiled floors and no heating, so pretty uncomfortable and chilly?

And, contrary to what some people think, no, if you're on a remote island it's entirely possible there is very, very little to do. And no, there aren't archaeological sites everywhere Hmm.

If you are on a remote island, what about a ferry to the mainland? Splash out on a cheap AirBnB in Athens for a couple of days or something?
