Am I ruining the holiday?

DP has not said as much but I just feel bad.

We spent a lot of money on a much needed holiday as we’ve been super stressed - we booked a really remote, hot location with the plan being nothing but sunbathing.
We’ve got here and it’s freezing cold, and it’s expected to be until we leave. I feel gutted because a) we spent a lot of money, b) there’s literally nothing else to do and c) he suggested other locations that I said no to because I have been before, and I should’ve gone for them as they’re really hot right now.

I keep mentioning the weather, DP keeps telling me to “make the most of it”, “it’s done now”, “it’s out of our control” etc but I just hate being cold and there’s literally nothing else to do. He told me off for looking at the weather and told me not to look again. But I just am so annoyed. Also gutted as I packed only dresses.

Also, I really wanted a holiday for us to just get away from everything as we’ve been so stressed. I said let’s just put our phones down for the week, and let’s not talk about anything going on at home that’s stressful, and let’s talk about different stuff, but he keeps scrolling each time I even walk 2 metres away. He said I put too much pressure on the holiday by saying this.
I then got upset during breakfast as he wasn’t really saying much and he said he felt pressured to make conversation. He also said he’d had 3 hours sleep and I wasn’t being understanding.

I just feel like a misery guts but I can’t help but be upset, and I don’t feel like he’s understanding. Am I unreasonable?

Yes, if you keep complaining about the weather you are ruining the holiday.

Make the best of it. If hiring a car isn’t possible, go for some walks on the beach, play card games, have some delicious food and drink… whatever you enjoy (and if you can’t do that, at least stop bringing up the weather so your DH can make the best of his holiday).

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/05/2023 15:46

And learn the lesson never to book a purely beach holiday in Europe in early May.

Geography. On the holiday threads there are always people planning holidays in the med in the last week of October half term and there is always someone who comes along and swears it will be scorching.
I have absolutely been freezing on a beach in the Algarve in July, rained on in Greece in September and had a whole week of rain and cloud in Majorca in early October.

Yeah it’s like people have forgotten what the European climate is actually like. There’s a reason May and October are out of season! You obviously can get lucky and get a random heatwave - like last October. We normally go to Canaries for a lovely 23/24 at Oct half term, would never risk Spain/Greece (I don’t expect this but it’s been usual for a few years) last year it was 28 with higher temperatures than normal across Europe too.

This doesn’t mean it’s usual though!

I do feel for the OP but I don’t know why they thought Greece in May would be guaranteed hot.

Catspyjamas17 · 15/05/2023 15:56

Looks absolutely perfect , clear, warm and cloudless in the area, to me! Unlike the 13C and hazy sunshine we have in London.

Am I ruining the holiday?
Ginmonkeyagain · 15/05/2023 15:58

Indeed. If we go away in May or October/November in Europe we tend to go on city breaks, which is better as it is usally nice enough to walk around and eat outside but cool enough to enjoy walking around sighseeing.

We went to Madrid a few year ago in early May - it was nice enough to walk around in shorts and sandals during the day but it as definitely cardigan and ;ight jacket weather in the evening and we had a few crazily rainy days.

WonderingWanda · 15/05/2023 16:00

Get on a bus, go and see some sights, buy a jumper, some books and some wine. Eat nice food. Hire a bike. Boring is as boring does goes the expression.

Well that's confusing....looks lovely.

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/05/2023 16:06

Low twenties celsius looks perfect for a sight seeing holiday, a little chilly for a lazy beach holiday but then again .... early May!

She’s taken clothes for the wrong climate though - she thought it would be hot so she’s only got dresses that’s why she’s cold.

24° IS summer dress weather for me!

SleepingStandingUp · 15/05/2023 16:16

How long have you been there / got left?

Why did he get 3 hrs sleep?

Can't you find a store that sells clothes and get yourself a wrap or similar if you've nothing but sun dresses?

Are you in an apartment or hotel? Surely you can still sit around and read and relax, eat nice food, have lots of sex, etc?

mindutopia · 15/05/2023 16:17

You can absolutely do beaches and books even if no sun. Dh and I just got back from Cornwall. It was a bit sunny and a bit cloudy, but not 'hot'. We did plenty of reading, lounging about (even outside), went to the beach at least twice a day for a swim. Just enjoy relaxing, resting and being together. Have some nice meals. Get a taxi somewhere or a local bus and do something. You just have to make the most of it. At least it's not pissing it down.

PrinceHaz · 15/05/2023 16:17

We had a freezing cold holiday to Crete at Easter. Needed coats all the time. We had a hire car and drove all over: did gorge walk, historic sites sat in cafes, even went to a garden centre! There was the occasional burst of warmth.
I’d recommend you hire a care just for a few days if it’s expensive. Go and get a few warm clothes. Explore a bit and eat some nice meals in the hotel. Maybe get busses if there are any.

Tbf if you pulled that up for England you might get 13 in London whilst it's 9 in the Midlands. That doesn't mean it isn't cold where op is

Identifyingasadolphin · 15/05/2023 16:24

Just confirming also in Greece OP, and yes it’s been unseasonably cold, so cold infact I have been confined to room for 4 days…unheard of…..turning the corner now

TorviShieldMaiden · 15/05/2023 16:30

How can you be confined to a room for cold? We go away in this country in January and spend most of time outside!

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/05/2023 16:30

Confined to your room? Surely it's not that cold?

LuckySantangelo35 · 15/05/2023 16:33

Cocktails OP??

StillWantingADog · 15/05/2023 16:33

Where in Greece is freezing? I have just googled lots of Greek places and it’s low twenties.
sounds very pleasant to me.

They don’t account for wind chill

Willhewonkher · 15/05/2023 16:41

I was in Crete last week, it was pretty cold - but I just chucked a hoody on and got on with it. I was thankful for the blankets in the hotel room!

tatteddear · 15/05/2023 16:43

This happened to me. Trip of a lifetime to the Maldives. We had two weeks of unseasonably bad rain and storms and in the Maldives on a very small island there was literally nothing to do but the intended sunbathing/swimming/diving-none of which were then available to us. We spent the whole time shrouded in beach towels over our holiday clothes, getting drunk and playing cards. (And to be fair having lovely afternoon bunk ups Grin). It was y what we thought but ended up having fun anyway.

I'd suggest you get a few drinks down you and make your own fun op Smile

Artic weather's in Greece? Missed that on the news

potniatheron · 15/05/2023 16:47

LOL why are some posters trying to 'catch' OP out by googling the weather? Greece is windy as hell especially on the islands. When Homeric epic poetry has about 6 different formulae for 'wind swept plains of Achaea' then you know you're talking about a very windy place 😂

randomchap · 15/05/2023 16:49

I don't know why people are responding, OP isn't going to come back.

HappiDaze · 15/05/2023 16:49

Yes you're ruining the holiday and probably to such an extent you may well find yourself holidaying alone next year
