To think this DOESN'T need the hospital?

My daughter hit her shin on the trampoline metal part really hard. She is screaming saying it burns. Have put ice on it but she's screaming in pain.

AIBU to think this is one of those things that will go on their own? You can't break anything by hitting it can you?

She can't straighten her leg or move it. She's screaming in agony saying it burns

Yes of course you can break a bone by hitting it on a metal bar.

Luckymummytoone · 14/05/2023 13:27

I’d imagine she’s hit it with some force so very much could be fractured! 😬

PinkFootstool · 14/05/2023 13:28

Unless she's prone to this level of hysteria over v minor things, I'd probably say A&E for that level of pain. Have you given her painkillers?

How old is she? Can you post another view from the side to show the bump?

Dontlistitonfacebook · 14/05/2023 13:29

This happened to my daughter - was hit on shin by a hard object. X ray showed a chip out of the tibia.

neverbeenskiing · 14/05/2023 13:29

Is this level of distress unusual for her when she hurts herself? I ask because I have one child who is remarkably stoic, and one who reacts to a papercut like she's having a limb sawn off so my response might differ depending which one it was!

Smartiepants79 · 14/05/2023 13:30

Can’t really tell which hit of her leg is injured but I would be giving it a little while to settle and see.
Ice it, keep her still, give her some calpol and dry and distract her.
If she’s still claiming it is that painful in an hour i’d call 111 and see what they advise. They can usually book you in to the appropriate a&e/urgent care centre.

RampantIvy · 14/05/2023 13:30

I agree that this needs an xray

TheOrigRights · 14/05/2023 13:31

Op, how DO you think bones break if not by impact from a very hard object?
I hope your DD is ok.
Hitting your shin really hurts.

Cakeorchocolate · 14/05/2023 13:33

"You can't break anything by hitting it can you?"

How exactly do you think things get broken?

It sounds like a visit to A+E would be appropriate.

Hugasauras · 14/05/2023 13:34

Are you really asking if a child who is screaming in agony and can't move her leg after hitting it very hard on metal shouldn't be taken to get medical attention Confused? Get off MN and at least call 111.

Wishiwasatailor · 14/05/2023 13:34

how is she normally with pain?
I would paracetamol and ibuprofen ice and elevate on the sofa with fave tv and a snack and reassess after an hour or so.

TheShellBeach · 14/05/2023 13:36

Don't bother with 111 as they'll only tell you to go to A and E, so you might as well just go there.

gimmeme · 14/05/2023 13:36

Phoning 111. She can be a bit dramatic. She has just tried to walk on it. Can manage three steps but I just don't know whether to believe as she has done this before with ankle and then been fine.

Even if there turns out to be nothing, the hospital won’t mind, she’s a child. I feel like it’s ok to be a little paranoid when it comes to kids 😂

TheShellBeach · 14/05/2023 13:36

That looks like it's near the ankle and could well be fractured.

Movingtodevon · 14/05/2023 13:37

I fractured my shin by slipping whilst getting on a minibus and whacking it on the metal step- so yes could be fractured. Needs an X-ray.

BreviloquentBastard · 14/05/2023 13:39

My nephew fractured his proximal tibia growth plate by whacking his shin off the edge of a trampoline, he's needed multiple surgeries to correct it and prevent him having one leg shorter than the other. If she's in that much pain it wants X-Raying. If she's damaged the growth plate it can literally cause lifelong disability if not treated and dealt with. If it's just a really bad bruise at least you'll know, and they can give her some good strong pain relief so she's not suffering.

Wishiwasatailor · 14/05/2023 13:39

If you think it needs a&e/MIU then take her but for love of god make sure she has adequate pain relief which probably means paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Grimchmas · 14/05/2023 13:41

Of course you can break a bone by hitting it on a metal bar! There are different types of fractures too, a hairline fracture or a chip wouldn't leave a leg sticking out at a funny angle, but both can and likely will get worse if not recognised and treated appropriately.

gimmeme · 14/05/2023 13:44

I've given paracetamol. She has calmed down now and is sitting watching tv. Tried to put ice on it but she says it hurts too much. She's saying it 'stings'.

I broke my ankle a few years ago and I KNEW immediately it was broken. She sitting calmly now so surely can't be broken?

DemelzaandRoss · 14/05/2023 13:45

This is a bit like Monty Python… ‘Tis but a scratch’…. Of course take her for an X Ray. It’s always best to be on the safe side. You would be very negligent if she has cracked the bone.
Hopefully she will not have to wait too long to be seen.

Doesn't hurt to get it checked out just incase it's fractured though

lailamaria · 14/05/2023 13:46

i think you're being needlessly cruel with your attitude towards your daughter, of course you can break a bone by hitting it against metal, and as for the walking i broke my leg and drove to a&e it killed and i cried the entire way but there was nobody else to take me and it would have been a waste of an ambulance, i'm glad you're actually talking to 111 though that seems to be an improvement to just leaving her on the sofa for an hour sobbing

RampantIvy · 14/05/2023 13:46

How do you know without an xray?

lailamaria · 14/05/2023 13:46

just take her to get an x-ray idk why you're being so blasé about this
