To think this DOESN'T need the hospital?

My daughter hit her shin on the trampoline metal part really hard. She is screaming saying it burns. Have put ice on it but she's screaming in pain.

AIBU to think this is one of those things that will go on their own? You can't break anything by hitting it can you?

She can't straighten her leg or move it. She's screaming in agony saying it burns

I've given paracetamol. She has calmed down now and is sitting watching tv. Tried to put ice on it but she says it hurts too much. She's saying it 'stings'.

I broke my ankle a few years ago and I KNEW immediately it was broken. She sitting calmly now so surely can't be broken?

I walked on a broken foot for several weeks. Don’t assume just because she’s mobile nothing is broken.

Zee1345 · 14/05/2023 13:57

If she's in a lot of pain you should definetly get her checked out at least to be on the safe side.
Don't leave her pain.
When my daughter was 3 she just " fell" on the trampoline whilst bouncing with her older cousin, she just fell and didn't hit it or anything. She was screaming and wouldn't put weight on it, their was absolutely no swelling or brusing to indicate she had broken anything or even injured herself, because of no swelling and brusing me and my husband decided to leave her till the next day as we thought it wasn't anything serious, but the next day she still was in pain and wouldn't put weight on her leg so we decided to take her to the hospital, the doctor at a and e checked her over and he didn't think it was broken either as no swelling or bruising, he thought it was just a pulled muscle but decided to do an x ray just to be on the safe side and turns out she had a fracture above her knee and was in a plaster cast for 6 weeks! I felt awful expecially for leaving her so long when she was in pain, I wish I would have got her checked out sooner even if it turned out to be nothing, but it did turn out to be something and I left her because I didn't think it was serious because she didn't have the normal symptoms of a break.
Please don't take any chances with things like this, it's always better to be safe than sorry expecially if your daughter is in a lot of pain. I'd rather to be told its nothing and just a normal injury than leaving it and it turning out to be something more.

Wife2b · 14/05/2023 13:58

Of course you should take her to get it checked out, given she’s only been able to walk 3 steps. I suspect you are minimising as you don’t want to spend your Sunday in an A&E waiting room…

The sooner you go, the sooner you get back and enjoy what’s left of your evening. Better safe than sorry.

Thebabysitter25 · 14/05/2023 13:59

If it was me I would give pain killers and see how it gos.

AtlasSeven · 14/05/2023 14:00

I’d take her to get it checked out.

Her sitting calmly now doesn’t mean it’s not broken.

CustardySergeant · 14/05/2023 14:02

She's obviously keeping it very still , so that's why she's stopped screaming in pain. That doesn't mean she hasn't broken a bone. She needs an x-ray.

Erised21 · 14/05/2023 14:02

I think you can get an X-Ray at some minor injury units, rather than going to A&E.

I fell over and broke my ankle when I was younger and neither of my parents believed me for a few days. Something I talked about in therapy recently!

I'm fairly sure that nowadays you might end up with a safeguarding referral if you seek medical attention for a child days after an injury.

Take her to minor injuries or A&E. To not do this is neglect.

Motherofalittledragon · 14/05/2023 14:04

My ds ran in to a bench when he was younger and fractured his tibia so it can be done unfortunately

Quartz2208 · 14/05/2023 14:04

DS broke his leg and his reaction was such you just knew.

2 years later he slipped onto his wrist and his reaction wasn’t like the leg - we were on holiday and he managed the final full day.

on the plane home his reaction was such it was clear it was broken and yes a minor fracture

the likelihood is that it isn’t fractured but it could be so needs checking

gimmeme · 14/05/2023 14:08

Still on to 111, she's now saying it's not as sore

When I broke my ankle I knew straight away because my foot was facing the wrong direction.

When I broke my collar bone I literally got back on the horse and carried on. It wasn't until I bruised it 6 months later and it was unbelievably painful that an xray showed a previous break that had been healing.

You don't know for sure. If u was your first aider, I would be telling you to go to A&E. But I'm not, and I'm also not telling you that if i knew my own child well and if they were prone to dramatics and the pain they reported was stinging and burning pain that has since subsided, and if my child had since calmed down and the pain is slightly less now I might well adopt a watch and wait attitude.

ItchycooParkCult · 14/05/2023 14:10

Ffs go to minor injuries!

my sister broke her arm and dislocated her elbow. My mother is a qualified nurse and didn’t believe it was broken because my sister was fine with pain meds.

it required surgery, casts, physio etc t get back to normal.

Broke my foot and knew it was broken. Sound was loud. The pain was intense for an hour but I drugged myself up, iced it and waited until the morning (fuck sat night A&E) 5 breaks. And I could hobble about and didn’t need pain meds. After the first hour.

WisherWood · 14/05/2023 14:13

It could well be. Obviously not all breaks are the same and so the signs are very different. I've known people walk on broken ankles. Get it x-rayed. FFS.

Houseupdate · 14/05/2023 14:13

Just go and get her checked.

Okay medical expert, she's sitting calmly so it can't be broken?

As a child, my parents took me to A&E with a suspected broken wrist. They were overwhelmed with emergencies that night and had someone literally take a quick glance at it (no x ray) they said I seemed okay by manner and they didn't think it was broken. They advised my parents to take me home and said to bring me back the next day 'if they really wanted to, but I should be fine'. By the next day it became obvious something wasn't right. I was taken back to A&E who confirmed it had in fact been very badly fractured. Maybe I'd have been taken more seriously if I hadn't tried to sit there calmly. She's probably only sitting quietly because you are making her out to be dramatic and she's given up asking for help.

Can’t really tell which hit of her leg is injured but I would be giving it a little while to settle and see.
Ice it, keep her still, give her some calpol and dry and distract her.
If she’s still claiming it is that painful in an hour i’d call 111 and see what they advise. They can usually book you in to the appropriate a&e/urgent care centre.

This.

Alleycat1 · 14/05/2023 14:18

I fell off my bicycle last year and broke my leg. I had to be dragged to the hospital by my friend's husband ( an ex-paramedic) as it didn't hurt much. I wouldn't believe it was broken until Dr showed me the X-ray.

Dreamgirls · 14/05/2023 14:19

Please take her to get an X-ray. I know plenty of people (including myself) who have had broken bones without realising it. If it is broken, and you don't get it treated, it could "heal" in the wrong way and leave your daughter with lifelong difficulties, or at least restrict her options. That might sound dramatic, but a friend of mine who walked on a broken ankle for weeks before realising it was broken can now only wear certain types of shoes, and can't play sports that she used to enjoy. Don't take that risk.

Smartiepants79 · 14/05/2023 14:20

Is there any sort of bruising forming.
Can she bare weight.
Sore to the touch is not the same as unable to stand on it.
I would suspect that a hematoma is most likely but just keep an eye on her and if you’re still concerned take her along for an x-ray.

rainbowstardrops · 14/05/2023 14:21

I know of people where their children have had accidents and they left it because it seemed fine and turns out they had broken bones!
I'd get it checked out. It's probably not as sore now because you've given her pain relief.

Greengold123 · 14/05/2023 14:22

Just go to a walk in centre / urgent care. You'll be seen much quicker than A&E and they'll have all the necessary equipment.

DailyMailHater · 14/05/2023 14:23

I did something similar messing around with beige and nephew on trampoline…everyone wanted me to get is checked but my pride (and stubbornness ) made me so it’s just a bruise…hobbled around for 2 days and the eventually went (after much nagging) and have cracked my shin bone down the middle vertically Dr said he thought it had got wider and wider over the two days and they had to pin it back together…now have a lovely scar from the survey and a couple of pins in my leg 😬 didn’t even think I hit it that hard 🫣

Crikeyalmighty · 14/05/2023 14:26

I did something similar with an elbow , wasn't sure whether to do A&E and had actually got a hairline fracture- and had to be plaster casted up - very bloody painful.

NoMoreCoffeePlease · 14/05/2023 14:29

Go to Minor Injuries at your local hospital.

shockthemonkey · 14/05/2023 14:30

Have you tried frozen peas instead of ice? You need something that can take the form of her leg.

I have walked around on a broken ankle... twice. So better safe than sorry - take her to A&E or equivalent.
