To think this DOESN'T need the hospital?

My daughter hit her shin on the trampoline metal part really hard. She is screaming saying it burns. Have put ice on it but she's screaming in pain.

AIBU to think this is one of those things that will go on their own? You can't break anything by hitting it can you?

She can't straighten her leg or move it. She's screaming in agony saying it burns

I'm so Uk lad be surprised if it is broken tbh. It isn't swelling and she can weight bare. That is a bugger of a bone to break, you'd definitely notice that one.

OrlandointheWilderness · 14/05/2023 21:52

What happened there!! 😂
I'd be surprised if it was broken is what it was meant to say... 😂

newjobnewstartihope · 14/05/2023 21:59

@gimmeme true though. Your daughter is in pain and limping yet you are piss arsing about on social media despite people giving to the advice you asked for

strawpumpkin · 14/05/2023 22:04

As someone who sat in a&e for a couple of hours the other day after a phone call from school to say DS had fallen badly on his arm and was in pain
Just go you'll only keep questioning yourself if not.
In ds case no break, a&e didn't think it was broken but x-rayed it anyway because they couldn't be sure and he was in pain when they were touching it
Without an x-Ray you just can't know

A doctor advised me to keep her home, give medication, and rest her leg and see how she does overnight. I am following instructions from a doctor yes, rather than people on Mumsnet.

Okay off you pop then if people on Mumsnets advice isn't valuable

newjobnewstartihope · 14/05/2023 22:10

As an aside I worked for 111 for many years and any injury that left a child in increasing pain and unable to weight bear would have automatically been a 'attend a&e or minor injuries' . I've never in my days heard of a doctor phoning and assessing such an injury over the phone

I wouldn't brag about listening to a doctor who can allegedly tell if a bone is broken by telephone 🙄

Erised21 · 14/05/2023 22:23

What a pointless thread.

My son broke a bone in his wrist. The doctor told me I could have it x-rayed because they couldn't be sure - you know looking at the actual wrist rather than having a telephone call - and it was Friday and fewer services over the weekend. My son was in a much better state than your daughter in terms of pain and mobility and he was in plaster by late afternoon.

caringcarer · 14/05/2023 22:55

Better to be safe than sorry. I'd get her to A&E for an X-ray.

User63847484848 · 14/05/2023 23:12

OP you are not going mad, you’ve taken medical advice and you can see what state your daughter is in after she bumped her shin. People are piling on in a weird way. See how she is tomorrow.

She really cannot compare wrist and leg.

JustDanceAddict · 15/05/2023 07:04

My DS broke his wrist when it stopped a football! We didn’t think it could be broken as not really bruised, but after a few hours I wasn’t happy with the way he was holding it & said it still hurt etc so we went to minor injuries to get x-rayed - was a small fracture & he was in plaster for 3 weeks!
I had worse bruises w sprained ankles so you never know.

gimmeme · 15/05/2023 07:34

I'm taking her to hospital as she can't flatten her foot

I've currently got a properly broken arm with no visible bruising or swelling. Hope she's OK OP

Jifmicroliquid · 15/05/2023 07:43

Depends on the break to be honest. I’ve broken both ankles and one was obviously broken but the other I got up and walked on and was quit shocked to discover it was fractured. I only got taken to hospital as it was a bad fall and I couldn’t move my neck very well so my mum thought that warranted a check. When the nurse saw me slightly limping, she sent me down for an X-ray and my ankle was broken.
Both times the pain was totally bearable, even the time that my foot was twisted the wrong way and snapped in several places, requiring extensive surgery.
It’s worth remembering that not everyone finds pain unmanageable. I declined pain relief in the ambulance, saying it didn’t feel too bad, to the bewilderment of the paramedic who was looking down at my very deformed limb.

Cazelet · 15/05/2023 07:46

I also broke my foot in three places once. Limped around on it, drove home and walked around all afternoon. Only realised the following day.

lljkk · 15/05/2023 07:47

Hope the hospital trip goes quickly & that she feels better soon, gimmeme.

gimmeme · 15/05/2023 07:55

I broke my ankle in 2 places and dislocated it. There was no walking on it. It basically just flopped there. Understand that's not everyone's experience though.

I can understand reluctance to go to a and e with it being in such turmoil right now, and wait times so long, but I also think you have to.

scrivette · 15/05/2023 07:59

Hope she is okay OP.

Well yes it would just flop there if dislocated, wouldn't necessarily do that if just broken.

Hope your dd is okay, glad you're finally taking her to a&e.

I think you’d only know it’s broken with that kind of feeeling if the bone has broken in half. This is far more likely to be a hairline fracture if broken.

user1471517095 · 15/05/2023 08:10

My DD came off her pony when she was 10. She said her arm ached a bit, but wasn't complaining about it, she was just a bit quiet. It was only the next morning, when she refused a Bacon Sandwich complaining her arm still ached, that we decided to go to A&E. Even the Dr on call said it wasn't broken, but he'd do an X-Ray just to check. We were all surprised when a "Green Stick" fracture showed up.
