To think this DOESN'T need the hospital?

My daughter hit her shin on the trampoline metal part really hard. She is screaming saying it burns. Have put ice on it but she's screaming in pain.

AIBU to think this is one of those things that will go on their own? You can't break anything by hitting it can you?

She can't straighten her leg or move it. She's screaming in agony saying it burns

When you dislocate it aswell, you tend to rupture the main ligaments and that’s what causes the flop and the inability to weight bear, rather than the bones. Ligaments are fairly decent at providing enough support to limp along if you just have more minor fracture. My first break was just bone involved, with some minor stretching of the soft tissue whereas my second break was a full on rupture of all the major supportive structures, which is why I couldn’t have stood on it even if I’d wanted to.

@gimmeme hope your dd is okay and the wait isn’t too long. Let us know how you get on.

OP just an insight, I've had medical emergencies before and in A&E my pain not taken seriously because I've been branded "dramatic" and "unable to cope with a normal amount of pain". It's a common harmful rhetoric that's pushed on girls and women by even medical professionals. Has caused a lot of harm to me and women I know. I can understand the wanting to wait a few hours to see how it goes first but for the complete dismissal of her, YABU. I'm glad you're taken her to be seen now. I hope she's ok

Unfortunately fractures of the shin bone (tibia) are common with trampoline use.
The authors, In the 5th paragraph of the discussion part of this paper, state they are often missed initially and thought to be bruises.

I do not think @gimmeme has done anything wrong by waiting and seeing how her DD is today. She has sought medical attention and has reassessed the injury appropriately.
IMO Monday mornings are often a better time to go to A&E than late on a Sunday evening

Trampoline-related fractures of the proximal tibia in children - Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research

Background Trampoline-related fractures of the proximal tibial metaphysis are common in children and have been linked to subsequent valgus deformity of the tibia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of trampoline-related pr...

Okay. So I personally would've taken my child to minor injuries yesterday rather than waiting about.
However, there is a silver lining in you waiting. Fractures are missed sometimes because of swelling so by waiting a day hopefully the X-ray images will be clear and leave no doubt.
Hope your little one is ok and no lasting damage. And please tell us you were more empathetic with your child IRL than it seemed from some of your posts.

Burning pain can be a good indicator of a break.

Glad she's being seen. You've had some stick on here, hope you're ok too.

Fingers crossed it's nothing serious and she'll be right as rain soon enough.

TiptoeThroughTheToadstools · 15/05/2023 09:56

Hope your DD is OK OP, I am one of those who would always err on the side of caution, but everyone is different! One of my kids would limp over the tiniest scratch and another is completely stoic and has tried to walk about and act normally on a broken hip and on a broken toe and metatarsal, my 3rd is somewhere in between the other 2. Please let us know how you get on!

elliesmummy19 · 15/05/2023 11:51

How did you get on at the hospital?

gimmeme · 15/05/2023 11:52

Not broken just badly bruised

Glad you took her and glad it's not broken. What have they told you to do now?

gimmeme · 15/05/2023 07:34

I'm taking her to hospital as she can't flatten her foot

Poor thing. She could have been sorted last night but you couldn't be bothered to take her.

That so a relief for her but next time do the right thing.

That's brilliant OP. Ignore the ridiculous posters making you look like a child abuser. You did the right thing and frankly if you didn't care, you wouldn't have posted on here for advice. It's a shame this site is turning into such a toxic place.

Jifmicroliquid · 15/05/2023 12:59

Great news OP. Bruising from a direct blow can be very painful so no doubt that she is very sore still. Ignore the drama queens on here who are trying to paint you as a child abuser.

DS1 nearly had me going to bloody A&E with him not long ago - got dropped off from a trip to a playground with my mum and dad with a slightly swollen on the surface grazed knee from "running into something made of wood".

He was hobbling round the house going "uuuuh" with (I suspect) a rather hammed up limp, so I made him lie on the loveseat with it up, put ice on it and rang mum and dad. Who informed me that after his "broken knee" he had continued to play and mooch around happily with no limping.

I figured that while he was probably being dramatic, the knee likely felt sorer to him now all the excitement had gone and kept an eye on him.

The next day, the slight swelling had turned into an unimpressive bruise, and the limping stopped...

Did they do an X-ray?

My son slipped down a fireman’s pole wearing gloves once and landed funny on his foot. In a lot of pain. Got seen at minor injuries and sent off. Told to come back In a few days if not better. He has still not right and when we went back the nurse said- it’s not broken , he’s just walked in. Funnily enough they did an X-ray and he had fractured a bone in his foot. He was actually walking on his heel. He had a boot for 6 weeks. Felt so bad if sent him into school after being told he was ‘fine’.

Yes X-ray done and no break or chip thankfully.

Having posted on this thread the other day, my DS broke his foot on Monday night playing football. I knew it was bad, but he insisted on playing on and I was further away than usual in an actual stand so couldn't speak to him. I took him to Minor Injuries yesterday and it is broken, even though the nurse guessed it was only bruised. He had played an extra 45 minutes of football and hadn't cried at all. He did have the sensation of it being cut though, which is why I took him to be checked, and because I know he has a stupidly high pain threshold. It just shows you can't really tell. He hasn't even had paracetamol yesterday or today.
