To think this DOESN'T need the hospital?

My daughter hit her shin on the trampoline metal part really hard. She is screaming saying it burns. Have put ice on it but she's screaming in pain.

AIBU to think this is one of those things that will go on their own? You can't break anything by hitting it can you?

She can't straighten her leg or move it. She's screaming in agony saying it burns

Still on to 111, she's now saying it's not as sore

But you've given her painkillers so of course it won't be as sore.

IWantRebeccasConfidence · 14/05/2023 14:31

Isn’t the whole point of minor injuries letting a medical professional assess if an X-ray is needed? They’d rather see and review and X-ray children than miss a broken bone?

All of this

Houseupdate · 14/05/2023 14:33

Some minor injury units have x ray facilitates and others don’t.

monsteramunch · 14/05/2023 14:34

It's silly not to get this looked at, it's nit worth the risk.

It's also a myth that if you can walk on your leg / ankle then it can't be broken. It absolutely can.

If she has fractured it then leaving it will mean it gets worse and worse.

Go to minor injuries / walk in if you really don't want to go to A&E, but do get it looked at as soon as possible just in case.

Grimchmas · 14/05/2023 14:35

Some minor injury units have x ray facilitates and others don’t.

and you can ring them in advance to check

SunnySaturdayMorning · 14/05/2023 14:35

Christ, stop neglecting your child’s medical needs and go to A&E.

newjobnewstartihope · 14/05/2023 14:37

Do you have a minor injuries department near you? May be a quicker option than a&e

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/05/2023 14:38

Broke my ankle turning it over sideways off a kerb.

Did not know, walked on it for two more days til the dull irritating ache got too much. Xray showed a clear break but not displaced. Plastered for 6 weeks.

Fell downstairs, I was facing up the stairs, twisted to turn on the stairs, ankle and knee failed and all my weight went through the side of my knee. Tore a lot of muscle/tendon in both knee and ankle, huge swelling, massive black bruising that slid down to my ankle, fat foot, agony for over 8 weeks.

Fell across the back door threshold coming in, both shins hit the sharp metal lip of the door frame, my full weight on them (and I am extremely overweight) - hurt almost as bad as the above torn tendons, a burning horrific pain. Xray showed hairline fracture in one and there was significant bone bruising in both. Took well over six months to stop hurting all the time and even now if something touches either shin in those places, it hurts like hell (over 2 years later!).

Do not underestimate how much other people hurt, or assume that a fracture always = screaming unending agony. The body does not work like that.

lucya66 · 14/05/2023 14:39

I chipped my tibia on a metal bunk bed when I was 15 and it was the worst pain I’d ever had. Still have a chunk / scar missing. It’s a little indent where the bone has gone. I screamed and cried a lot.

didn’t go to a and e though.

ittakes2 · 14/05/2023 14:40

My son has broken or chipped bones playing football at least 5 times and it’s often been the view of who he is with things are not broken as he does not seem to be in pain enough or swelling should be worse etc. Even when he broke his arm at 6 in the school playground teacher were he’s not crying enough for it to be broken. Personally the odd angle of his hand made me suspicious and it was broken. If she can’t walk then I would ask for an X-ray.

Cornettoninja · 14/05/2023 14:41

If you’re unsure and can’t come to a satisfactory answer yourself then you need to seek a medical opinion, 111, A&E, urgent care, loads of options.

It’s impossible to tell whether anything has been broken from an external picture. People were chuffed when the x-ray was invented for a reason…

Kyse23 · 14/05/2023 14:42

I broke my ankle getting out of bed and walked on it for a week. Even wore heels and went out dancing
A&E said it wasn't broken but sent me for an X-ray anyway. Broken in numerous places, foot and ankle Blush

Farmgirl12 · 14/05/2023 14:42

Sadly the thing with a broken/fracture we can’t always see it. Unless obviously it’s an open fracture.

my daughter fell on her wrist at the trampoline park. And honestly made the biggest fuss: after about half an hour she had calmed down. Still took her to the hospital and she had indeed fractured her wrist.

Always worth a check up

I've given paracetamol. She has calmed down now and is sitting watching tv. Tried to put ice on it but she says it hurts too much. She's saying it 'stings'.

I broke my ankle a few years ago and I KNEW immediately it was broken. She sitting calmly now so surely can't be broken?

I broke my ankle last year and walked on it (limped on it) for days before going to a&e. Could have done lasting damage by being brave and assuming it wasn't broken.

Has 2 relatives discover they had broken bones in the past when xrayed in later life. Both remember it hurting but being encouraged to get in with things.

Keep an eye and if swelling, excessive bruising and or pain don't miss something you'll regret later

Wouldn't she be in agonising pain and still crying?

I went to work for 3 days with what I thought was a sprained wrist. On the 4th day, when it was still really painful, I went to A&E.

It was broken in 3 places, and they had to operate and put a metal plate in.

MrsDoylesDoily · 14/05/2023 14:50

I broke my ankle last year and hobbled around for 3 days before getting an X-Ray. It didn't particularly hurt much and I was shocked to find it was broken.

Either way, make sure she stays off of it and keeps it elevated.

noctu · 14/05/2023 14:51

I fully appreciate A&E / minor injuries unit isn't the nicest place to spend your Sunday afternoon - but I'm baffled that you're not there already. Your poor child needs an x-ray. If this happened to an adult you wouldn't be doubting their pain would you?

Irisheyesareshining · 14/05/2023 14:53

Why are you second guessing ? If she’s in that much pain surely a visit to AE is necessary .

gimmeme · 14/05/2023 13:47

Wouldn't she be in agonising pain and still crying?

My daughter has fractured her wrist, elbow and lower arm (all separately, all skateboarding) and has plodded on for days just saying they ached.

The first one was the lower arm, I noticed it looked a little swollen 24 hours after the initial injury while helping her take off a wetsuit (she was only 5 or 6) and it was a greenstick fracture that needed a cast.

Second was the wrist, took her to a&e after a week, just needed a wrist splint.

Third was elbow, 111 fobbed us off for a bit so took her after a week and again, chipped but didn't need a cast.

She is spectacularly stoical however, but in each of those instances there were no tears, she carried on with sports, school etc with the odd moan that it ached.

MrsDoylesDoily · 14/05/2023 14:56

I think (looking at the latest photo) if this was my child and she'd calmed down, I'd keep it elevated and if it's still sore in the morning, I'd go to a walk-in centre first thing for an x-ray.

Do you have a local walk-in OP?

Ontheflipside_ · 14/05/2023 14:57

Get her checked out for goodness sake. My parents didn't believe I'd injured myself that badly when I was 9 and fell off a climbing frame. They didn't take me to hospital for 2 days, turns out I'd broken both wrists! They still feel awful 20 years later (as they should!)

Tiddlypomtiddlypom · 14/05/2023 14:58

Sorry, but this is one of the daftest things I’ve read on here:

AIBU to think this is one of those things that will go on their own? You can't break anything by hitting it can you?
