Would DH be unreasonable to wear a short suit to a wedding?

We have a few weddings coming up this July and August. Given the very hot weather last year and that DH runs warm, he’s considering wearing a short suit if the weather is hot. We’re young, and the weddings we’ve been invited to are relaxed and casual, rather than a traditional occasion. We’re not part of the wedding party, and as DH is tall he tends to be at the back of photos. Here are some examples for styles he’s looking at. I know some of these are styled casually, but DH will be in a shirt and smart shoes. I know it’s bit left field but would be interested to see what the view is as DH is considered about sweltering in a traditional suit but also doesn’t want to go totally rogue.

Short suits are fine, they look better than standard or linen suits like they wear in the UK for summer weather. I've been to weddings in the USA where they've been commonly worn for years, no one bats an eyelid, and they look smarter than the men in suits because they're not sweating and looking uncomfortable.

But it's the UK, they're weirdly sniffy about things like that!

Let him lead the revolution - some people may be channeling Mrs Bucket style disapproval, but most will either not care, or they'll admire the good common sense!

I quite like a short suit

But only on men under 35 with the body of a Premier League footballer

Therefore my darling husband will never be in a short suit

PurelyBelter · 13/05/2023 20:35

I'm getting married in June and I wouldn't mind. I think they look horrible personally, but if it would make someone more comfortable, I couldn't care less what they looked like.

Blancmangemouse · 13/05/2023 20:40

Sorry, it’s a no from me.
No objection in principle, if they became a widely seen thing then fine, but I have never seen a suit like that in my life, let alone at a wedding and I’m afraid he will stick out and look silly.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/05/2023 20:41

The only time a fully grown man should wear a shorts suit is if he's standing in as the lead guitarist for AC/DC.

maryberryslayers · 13/05/2023 20:44

Suit 'shorts' aren't acceptable on anyone over 3 years old.
Even my 4yo has started wearing long trousers to formal events!

Agree with this.
Like a PP said the short suit still looks smarter than some of the dresses some women wear to weddings.

Have to say, it's pretty gross and disappointing that there have been SO many comments on it only being suitable if the man is slim/muscular. Can you imagine the backlash had similar comments been made that a woman should only wear a certain style of dress if she was below a size 8...

Agreed!

FWIW, DH and friends range from 29-36 and a good majority of them wore this kind of outfit to a beach wedding and a "posh" barn wedding last summer.

Timeforchangeithink · 13/05/2023 21:20

Only if he's in early to mid 20's. Light trousers and a short sleeved shirt would be better

Throwncrumbs · 13/05/2023 21:23

If my husband turned up in one of them, I would divorce him, they’re hideous!

Kablea · 13/05/2023 21:29

I think it looks great. The groom at a wedding last year wore a short suit and looked fantastic. My brother is wearing one to his wedding this year and so is my husband. I’m thinking of wearing one too!

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 13/05/2023 21:33

Absolutely ridiculous, attention-seeking and uncouth.

Astrak · 13/05/2023 21:44

No. Ghastly.

LetsPlayShadowlands · 13/05/2023 21:45

Weird shift in societal expectations with this issue. 95-100% of the women will have their legs on show, but this guy can't? Madness.

Chickenkeev · 13/05/2023 21:56

You's are complete dicks. Why do you think are that you can dictate mens clothes? We wouldn't do it for women. I really am shocked. They're not harming anyone. Cop yourselves on.

TMess · 13/05/2023 22:01

I think you can tell what the main demographic is here by all the suggestions of a short sleeved dress shirt and linen trousers. 😅
At every summer wedding we attended last year there were men wearing similar. If you aren’t completely sure about it then I wouldn’t but I can’t imagine anyone batting an eye.

AprilLovesTV · 13/05/2023 22:02

Embarrassing

This.

The only way this can work is if your DH is amazing looking & with a great body

It's just not a forgiving style.

😂

As long as you're OK with him divorcing you if he doesn't like you're dress

If they where them alit in the US, what shoes do they wear? Perhaps @toastofthetown can guide him in some decent footwear

HowToLearnToLoveMyself · 13/05/2023 22:10

Its fine.
I had 1 person wear it tracksuit bottoms and converse to ours. Did it affect my day? No!
Thats who they are and how they feel comfortable. Im happy they took time out if their lives to celebrate with us

Elvis1956 · 13/05/2023 22:19

As a man with traditional values, dress sense. Yes. I think he'd look like a cock. "Oh look at me, I'm soon I wacccy" twat. Don't let him do it. Suits now are light weigh...actually too light weigh..make him look like a man not a 7 year old

Elvis1956 · 13/05/2023 22:22

SleepingStandingUp · 13/05/2023 20:11

Yes, the whole time she's walking down the aisle, people will be canning for a view of his legs. During the cutting of the cake, the first dance, people will just be agog at male legs.

🙄

But he will just look like an attention seeking prick...I'm male and so say no, Fuck, no

Pencilsaremylife · 13/05/2023 22:22

Have any you having the vapours about men legs being on show and the sight of a man’s shapely calf drawing all the attention away from the bride ever been to a Scottish wedding? Or even a family wedding elsewhere with Scottish ancestry. There’s acres of manly flesh on display you’d faint clean away especially if they are “true” Scot’s. Brides still manage to be the centre of attention though. OP could he wear a kilt no need for a jacket.
