She asked for a refund when she was being asked to leave. Basically saying if you’re chucking me out without my drinks, then you should give me a refund. Why should she pay for drinks they wouldn’t give her ?

Why did they refuse to serve her the drinks? The video starts after it.

you wouldn’t like such biased reporting if it was the other way round.

ClairDeLaLune · 13/05/2023 14:53

Oy! Stop taking my (almost) name in vain!

This story has been blown out of all proportion. It’s a total over-reaction.

I was once called Sir in Costa. Did I throw a hissy fit, threaten anyone, call the police or go to the papers? No, I just said “haha time for a makeover then” and went about my day.

SillyMe101 · 13/05/2023 14:54

ladygindiva · 13/05/2023 13:31

Yes I agree with this. The situation has been resolved , what's to gain from publicising her identity? GC here as well but this feels nasty.

So much this. The person involved really doesn’t sound very nice but what amounts to doxxing in the Daily Mail is shockingly inappropriate. Someone behaves very badly in public and is named in the paper, so far so normal. But giving full details of their education, parents’ names, what their neighbours think of them, description of the parents’ house… this is insane. And I’m hardcore GC, but everyone has a right to privacy. There hasn’t even been a conviction!

The Mail article is as usual a pile of shit. Luna's neighbours are actually saying Luna is lovely, but they are now afraid of offending Luna because of what they've seen in the media. There is no evidence of Luna being aggressive before.

There is evidence of Luna being someone who stands up for what they believe in - which is what they think they are doing here. I actually think it's important that their motivation is to defend a co-worker.

At the point the video starts, we have no idea what the customer has already done, but she, not Luna, is the one shouting loudest.

Luna's behaviour does then escalate to an unnacceptable level of aggression, and the behaviour towards the camera person is totally unacceptable.

But I wouldn't take the Daily Mail's contribution as adding anything useful to the way we understand what happened and not for the first time, think some Mumsnet users are happily getting into bed with some very dodgy forces.

There's no evidence of the woman being transphobic at all. There is clear evidence of Luna being violent. Why do you assume the woman must have don't something bad?

It doesn't matter if they haven't been thus violent before. Doesn't make this OK.

Why would standing up for a couple worker require violence in this situation? Or shouting? Or denying a refund after tell the person they want to leave?

that's a lot of words to say you think it's ok for taller bigger person to behave in an aggressive way (clapping in my face would have me shouting at you too) towards an older woman is fine.

it is not fine and you are excusing appalling behaviour

Sevenbells · 13/05/2023 14:55

The article is in the public interest.

Many women have felt threatened in a not dissimilar situation to this one, or felt similarly compelled to silence themselves to avoid such a scene, and I think it's important to show what happens when women (and really only women, men mostly get a free pass, funny that) talk back.

And for that abuse and those threats of violence to be visible to the general public through the media.

Especially when we are constantly fed the idea that only trans women are at risk of violence.

Although of course I would prefer it didn't happen at all, because it's so ugly and disturbing.

There is an ongoing debate about the conflict of rights and the inherent misogyny of this movement.

This video captures it.

And is a very clear retort to the gaslighting that usually gets shoved down our throats about these "incredibly vulnerable" people.

High five - I was called ‘Sir’ in a Co-Op once. That was awkward 😂

Its in the story.

cakeorwine · 13/05/2023 14:56

The article is in the public interest

Which article?

The article about the video and the incident OR the article naming and shaming the person, trying to speak to friend's, neighbours, Dad etc

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 13/05/2023 14:57

QueenoftheNimbleFlyingCat · 13/05/2023 13:11

People behave poorly all the time, the disproportionate response to this 1 incident actually does stink of transphobia. Like I said, I'm GC, but this is a witch hunt and irresponsible of the daily mail.

1000%

Brefugee · 13/05/2023 14:58

i do think it's dangerous that as a result of the video, and possibly this article, that some people are saying "well we don't know what the customer did to provoke this"

The customer did absolutely nothing to provoke this - because there are no words a customer can use that would possibly provoke this aggressive clapping in your face and all the rest.

I'm quite easy going, so were i to misgender someone - all that would be required is "I'm 'they/them" or whatever, and then i say sorry and we all get on with our day. We need to get companies to train their staff not to overreact like this.

Also i want to know that Starbucks have given the women her tenner back.

cakeorwine · 13/05/2023 15:00

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 13/05/2023 14:57

1000%

Of course the Daily Mail seem to run a lot of articles that show trans people in a negative light, they rarely show positive stories about trans people.

For some reason. Anyone would think they want to create an impression about trans people to help reinforce the impression some people have about trans people - and to reinforce stereotypes about their behaviour.

All this does is to help reinforce stereotypes and to fuel people's cognitive biases.

fuckthemail · 13/05/2023 15:00

HRTQueen · 13/05/2023 13:29

This has been blown completely out of proportion

There are incidents every day of people kicking off and being unreasonable

this incident should not be bought into the debate around self id it’s just people arguing and then others saying well you see what they are like

its like a witch hunt I’ve reported it to mn

This.

Yabu for promoting transphobia

Yabu for sharing anything by the daily fail

Trans people aren't making a scene. Transphobes like loads here sharing fucking daily mail articles are the ones who are making transphobia even worse. These are human beings

Sevenbells · 13/05/2023 15:00

cakeorwine Both. This person appears dangerous to women. I can't get too upset about that being exposed. OK it's the DM so it's hardly quality journalism but it's still important that this side of the movement is shown, whereever possible.

@BishyBarnyBee firstly, I doubt the woman’s husband would have started filming if it was his wife who started the row and was kicking off without provocation. I expect he filmed it because his wife was being treated in a threatening manner.
And secondly, from what we’ve heard, Luna stepped in when the co-worker was being moaned at for not accepting cash - fair enough. But then jumped down the woman’s throat for referring to the co worker as “her” when apparently she’s “non binary”. Then Luna accused the woman of being transphobic! How the hell was she supposed to know that the woman was “non binary”. Luna was just looking for a fight, like a typical aggressive bloke.

Is it important to name and shame them, to try to interview their family, friends etc?

How far should the media go in these stories?

Sevenbells · 13/05/2023 15:02

All this does is to help reinforce stereotypes and to fuel people's cognitive biases.

I think Luna did a pretty good job of that themselves.

Nothing the daily fail do is in the public interest. It's a shit rag.

Since when did anyone say only trans women experience violence? No one ever says that.

And yes they are incredibly vulnerable. Because of vultures like you

Sevenbells · 13/05/2023 15:04

cakeorwine If your behaviour is bad enough to be clickbait for the DM then really, you need to reflect. Luna could reflect. Luna could apologise. Luna could not clap in women's faces and shout at them when all they want is a coffee.

Did you watch the video to see who was making a scene? To see who stormed over to who and demanded the phone?

I, like many other became aware of the video before it was picked up by many media outlets.

Why did they refuse to serve her the drinks? The video starts after it.

@AnonyMenOhPee OK so the customer ordered the drinks, and when she was paying she wanted to pay cash, but was told that wasn’t allowed, so she paid with her card. She had a moan about it to the staff member at the counter, and Luna stepped in. The customer said “I wasn’t talking to you, I was talking to her”, meaning the staff member at the counter. Luna then started ranting and calling her transphobic and telling her to leave. The customer said she wanted a refund, because at that point it was clear that she wasn’t going to be given her drinks, and was being thrown out.
