@DuncinToffee I hate to say it but that optic is so bad it may actually help the cause.

Roussette · 11/05/2023 14:24

I'm hesitant to say but if it might make just one fervent royalist realise that this public order law and arresting anyone around, including peaceful protesters, is very wrong... I will be delighted.

Whaeanui · 11/05/2023 14:28

That poor woman! Just standing there!

countrygirl99 · 11/05/2023 14:56

Now be fair to the police. I bet she was planning on cheering and waving flags and that sort of thing can really frighten horses. What if all the cheering and flags had caused a horse to bolt into the crowd and killed an oap or even a kiddy.

Roussette · 11/05/2023 15:34

The thing is... I don't mean to be provocative but I wish some of the posters who are insisting that those arrested were going to intimidate them, block their view, frighten horses, they weren't monarchy but they were stop oil, they were glad they were arrested, they deserved it.... I wish they would come back on this thread.
And I could say... what about this woman then, is that OK???

Whaeanui · 11/05/2023 15:47

Yes @Roussette I hate the thought of an arrest and search, which is why I’m you know, law abiding! This woman was just there to see the King!?

cakeorwine · 11/05/2023 18:52

From that"

It wasn't until two senior officers interviewed her at 7pm, more than 10 hours after she was arrested, that police acknowledged they'd made a mistake

"They asked 'have you ever heard of Just Stop Oil? I said 'up until today no'"

What if she had said yes? I have heard of them.

Whaeanui · 11/05/2023 19:12

That’s a good question. I mean this is ridiculous, how can they just do this without cause.

vera99 · 11/05/2023 19:42

DuncinToffee · 11/05/2023 14:15

Just standing near protesters can get you arrested as well

A royal superfan was arrested and held by police for 13 hours because she happened to be stood next to a group of Just Stop Oil protesters ahead of the King’s coronation
During a 13-hour ordeal, Chambers said she was repeatedly questioned, subjected to physical searches, held in a cell and had her DNA, fingerprints and mugshot photo taken before the Met Police finally realised she was an innocent bystander
twitter.com/theipaper/status/1656634581859147776?s=20

If we all wore Just Stop Oil t-shirts whether we agreed with them or not it would confuse the hell out of the police!

Interesting /depressing read about the new laws that have been recently introduced

The coronation arrests are just the start. Police can do what they want to us now | George Monbiot | The Guardian

Protest and dissent is being cracked down . Will the police be arresting people and giving them orders to report to the police station instead of attending a protest? That's legal now.

Draconian new powers allow the police to shut down every form of effective protest, writes Guardian columnist George Monbiot

The Royalist who was arrested, DNA'd, handcuffed and kept in a cell for 12 hours has just been interviewed on Breakfast News. Will it strike home with some? Doubtful

cakeorwine · 12/05/2023 08:23

This is yet another example of the "First they came for the " poem

People who are happy to see this enacted will be unhappy if they want to protest and the police come to them.

Yes but those who tend to be Tory loving and possibly Royalist really aren't the type of people to go on a March, hold a placard, hold their MP to account, be interested in social justice etc.
I'll probably get flamed for this, but I am not talking about everyone. Just some.

Crustsamongus · 12/05/2023 16:28

I get the impression, rightly or wrongly, that a royalist being mistaken for a JSO protester and being arrested is considered far worse than Republic demonstrators being nicked. I don't see much difference tbh

cakeorwine · 12/05/2023 18:34

I was disappointed that this wasn't on Question Time last night. There was discussion of the Channel crossings again.

I hope it's on HIGNFY tonight.

I agree. It's probably pre-recorded but still...

My DD went to a BBCQT and it was interesting to hear her take on it

Aintshesweet · 12/05/2023 21:09

Bloody love HIGNFY! Top item

NeverMyKing · 12/05/2023 22:56

@cakeorwine absolutely stunned it wasn’t on QT! It was on of the top news stories for days 😳

I wonder if that was deliberate ?

I don't listen to Any Questions - but I guess the momentum of this has finished now

Until the next time. It will be interesting to see what happens if the Met Police are at a Parliamentary Committee

rattymol · 13/05/2023 11:23

A bit gobsmacked at the suggestion people should be arrested if they are in danger of being attacked..

Interesting

Membership of anti-monarchy group Republic almost doubles in wake of coronation arrests | Republicanism | The Guardian

The anti-monarchy group Republic’s membership has almost doubled in a week, following the high-profile arrest of its chief executive, Graham Smith, during last weekend’s coronation.

Scotland Yard has expressed “regret” over the arrest of a group of protesters from Republic on the morning of the coronation on 6 May. Smith said the group had benefited from more than £80,000 in donations over the last week and attracted thousands of new paying members.

Only 12% of Britons polled pledged allegiance to the king in a ‘homage of the people’

Republic’s membership has almost doubled over just a few days, rising from about 5,000 to about 9,000.
An anti-monarchy coronation appeal saw its funds increase from £47,000 on the day of the coronation to more than £91,000. The group also separately received about £20,000 in donations, including one single donation of £10,000.

Proud to be a member.

And probably on a list somewhere.

Yep! I had an email from Graham personally (no, not really!) thanking me! I have joined before but not on a rolling membership, as a one off. Joined again since this. Great email from him

Crustsamongus · 13/05/2023 22:50

DH has just told me that being against the monarchy without having a fully thought through alternative that is compatible with British political culture (i.e. just being against the monarchy) is akin to voting for brexit as a protest vote. Funnily enough I am now vvvv pissed off with him. I am perfectly allowed to be against something on the grounds that it is fundamentally wrong and indefensible. That is not the same as an uninformed protest vote based on strawman arguments with disastrous political and economic consequences. I don't need to provide the alternative!
