Honest answers please

would you give a woman (maybe Muslim maybe Jewish) a wide berth if you saw them wearing a burkini or modest (Ie fully covered) swimsuit at a pool?

if you see a woman wearing one do you give it a second thought or is it just a meh, who cares?

tia

I wouldn't but I would make sure my son did to try and respect their wishes of not having contact with unrelated males. Same as a I do around women wearing religious clothing like this in shops.

cpphelp · 08/05/2023 07:21

I'd probably double take as I've never seen one before, but honestly not in a nasty way. I'd just think "oh, that's a good idea".

I've learned something new today @Mvslimah, so thank you.

I really like this one actually from Lyra!

Would notice, as would be attire I'm not used to, but it would not bother me. Would wonder if the woman was wearing it through choice or being told she has to.

IrregularChoiceFan · 08/05/2023 07:22

Make sure my sone gave them a wide berth that should say sorry.

Bloopsie · 08/05/2023 07:28

So not France then, so what can men wear in Belgium? Every man at the pool was in some form of trunks

Those little speedo banana pants. My dp (not muslim) refused to go when we used to travel there a lot. I don't blame him tbh.

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/05/2023 07:53

I have no views on Burkinis but what is this about British people not showering before they go in tne pool? I always do and a lot of pools have signs requesting people do just that.

Maireas · 08/05/2023 07:57

Oh dear, that brown and orange looks just awful! I've seen some streamlined navy ones which look more chic. That's not a great example.

Sad news. You may be shocked to find noone else does. Worse - they go straight from the sauna or gym into the pool. All that sweat. Mmmmmm.

Fgfgfg · 08/05/2023 08:00

@ fairywhale
You are suggesting woman's body is offensive. This would be a new and alien concept in the UK.

Really? What planet do you live on? Body shaming, ageism, you name it, all alive and well every day in Britain.

LolaSmiles · 08/05/2023 08:04

Wouldn't care at all and find it really sad that some people only consider women empowered if she chooses to remove clothing.

Fgfgfg · 08/05/2023 08:05

Nigella in a burkini.

Would wear one myself much more flattering

Each to their own 🙂

Indexed @cpphelp - they have some quite nice ones on the Next website.

Maireas · 08/05/2023 08:18

I think we should campaign for men to wear burkinis.

But modest in this context is the closest translation of haya حياء but Arabic is a complex language so the English doenst quite map so it’s not as straight forward as modest / immodest or decent/ indecent

حياء covers everything speech, mannerism, behaviour, inflection, bashfulness, dress, tone, gait etc. I’m using modesty here because it is the most accessible when talking to majority non Muslim people because the assumption is they won’t know Islamic terms.

hijab is more used (again wrongly) to refer to covering the woman’s body in a more dichotomous sense ie a hijabi or non hijabi.

ive also never ever encountered a Muslim triggered by the term modesty. I myself would argue it’s used sometimes as a beating stick against women by some very misogynistic cultures/ scholars/ individuals but it’s bSed on a very superficial and oversimplification of the concept of haya

You post asked about swimwear . You had a clear, measured historically informed response why non-Islamaphobic people may be resistant to your cultural practice.

i don’t know if you have acknowledged this? I have seen cherry picking sections from people’s answers that you wish to educate people on - Interesting details about Arabic practises, your own life , your husband’s family attitudes and more.
I condemn the rudeness and bigotry that made you feel judged at the pool.
When answering on the thread , in my reading you don’t show empathy for the importance to many of rights won by 19th and 20th century feminists in which the right to reveal stomach, thighs, non genital and breast area clothing while swimming is a legacy.
would this be included in how you would answer questions from your kids? Ie respectful dialogue that appreciates why some people connote the topic of adult female body covering to issues of freedom in own fairly recent history in non-Islamaphobic terms. Might it help with the French thing upthread. In our experience, the men were turned away and had to go and buy tiny speedos to get let in for hygiene reasons.

2I can’t accept that you can assert boss/beach experience to be the same until you have spent a day on the beach and in a spa with a bikini on, as well as in a full length suit m.

As sauna process is partly about the skin releasing toxins through sweat which are scraped off mid sauna any clothing greets in The way, hence nude sauna preferable with a towel or small suit suit a co ncession. Polyester, Lycra covering not beneficial to the rovers
how do you discuss and debate cultural norms towards nudity for example in Scandinavia with your family and Muslim community ?

Bresia · 08/05/2023 08:35

I would wonder if it was the woman's choice. I'm not keen on getting semi-naked at the pool or the beach either.

Agree. Who's pandering to men more ... 🤔

Bagsundermyeyestoday · 08/05/2023 08:49

I always thought the burqua was a great invention, some days I'd love to roll out of bed and chuck one of those over my PJs for the morning run. Burquini equally great if you haven't shaved your legs and any other areas

Maireas · 08/05/2023 08:54

Although it is good for your skin to be uncovered at times, and nice to feel the sun, the breeze, the water on your face and arms and legs, whatever. Vit D, etc. Not frying yourself, but sun exposure is good for you. Maybe women only areas?.

If you are in the UK, there's nothing stopping you- or, if not going to that extreme, wearing a long and long sleeved dress- I've got several which would do the job of covering up unshaved legs.

No one is forcing women in the UK to wear skimpy clothes or shave their legs. It's nonsense to pretend it is and frankly shows a huge lack of understanding and empathy for women who don't have our choices.

That's a gross misinterpretation of what has been said. No one thinks that.

Maireas · 08/05/2023 09:05

@NatashaDancing , good point

Bumfluffs · 08/05/2023 09:07

Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.
