I got into trouble at a meeting of people with a common interest. In the beginning, I explained that I had ADHD and asked that if I said anything inappropriate, please tell me, and I'll apologise and stop.
Guess what happened?. I did say something, and instead of telling me to stop, someone challenged my statement, and it went downhill after that.
A lady sitting next to me said that she also had ADHD, but that I should have recognised a line that I should not have crossed.
I told her that I didn't have that ability, I only knew if I got it wrong by the reaction it produced, good or bad.
She told me that wasn't true. She was also prone to inappropriate speech and behaviour but knew what boundaries she shouldn't cross.
Anyway, I was banned from the group, which was hurtful but not unusual. ADHD has cost me friends, jobs, and strained family relationships all my life.

Natural tan?? What does that even mean? Many people have asked if you are black mixed race and you still haven't answered. Are either of your parents black? 15 pages in and it's still not clear if OP has a black parent or not.

She doesn't need a black parent to be African

GoodChat · 07/05/2023 19:26

Mentioning pronouns and gender in the same sentence again implies that it's a choice or a fad. It belittles trans people.

They kicked her out for being racist, not transphobic

If you are white without any African relatives you are absolutely not racially African. Being born there doesn’t make you that race. Beyond offensive.

There are millions of non black Africans. Like Egyptians, Algerians, Moroccans, many other countries. Or should they not describe themselves as African either? And the OP says she is mixed race, not white.

LateAF · 07/05/2023 19:40

GoodChat · 07/05/2023 19:25

No but the form she was discussing with her group was about ethnicity and you do need to be black or have a black parent to legitimately identify as ethnically black African. That's why OP's ambiguity about her racial heritage is incredibly frustrating - I would guess she's mixed race but does not have a black parent since she keeps on mentioning having a tan and not identifying as black.

GoodChat · 07/05/2023 19:42

@LateAF ah sorry, I understand. So, on that basis, she'd be a white African?

I apologise for not differentiating between Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. Before I came to the UK, I thought the whole map was England. 😃

There is an island called Ireland, consisting of 32 counties.

There is a country called Ireland (the Republic of Ireland) made up of 26 counties.

The remaining 6 counties constitute Northern Ireland.

There is no "Southern Ireland"

Papernotplastic · 07/05/2023 19:45

No, she’d be mixed race or white.

MedievalMadness · 07/05/2023 19:48

I honestly don’t do my head in trying to fill these forms in as often ethnicity doesn’t fall into neat little boxes. I go with white other and have done with it.

Id choose whatever is the nearest match and not give it any more headspace.

Id definitely not expect to be confronted over what I’d selected though. You can be fair skinned and light haired and be mixed race like Harry and Meghans two kids. Their complexion doesn’t make them any less mixed. I’m no fan of the Sussexes but absolutely no one has the right to challenge Meghan about her race, how dark her skin is, how she chooses to wear her hair etc. There’s a lot of racism in this country. Some very subtle some overt. No one has the right to tell you what your heritage is .

I think the back and forth and 'Read the OP' from you @MobilityCat just shows how convoluted communication can be, rather than straightforward, leading to many people trying to fill in the blanks.

I agree with @Kanaloa who suggests you go back to your psych and ask for support and strategies to use. If that is problematic (I guess waiting times are currently long!) try looking at this link and emailing them detailing your issues re communication and asking to be signposted to support in your area.

Thank you. I'll try that.

I get you op I’m also mixed race I’m as much the non white part of me as the white part but people can get real weird about mixed race people because they like a nice neat box, we don’t really have a box always.Barrack Obama is mixed and is described as the first black president of the USA. His Mother is white also Meghan Markle is mixed and very much volts forward her non white side.

People cannot choose their sexuality.

That notion leads to conversion therapy. And that's abhorrent.

Is it South Africa you come from OP? Some people are very ready to assume racism will be forthcoming when they hear that accent and it may have meant they felt slightly prejudiced against you already if you're also light skinned. If they believed they were listening to a white person with a SA accent claiming to be African because they were born there it will have triggered a strong knee-jerk reaction.
That's not okay, but people do make these snap judgements. If you do want a way to mention your race and nationality in future, maybe saying 'As I'm half Kenyan and Zimbabwean and was born in Africa, I am African.' I'm not saying you should explain, but that would be one way to do so if you wanted to.

MobilityCat · 07/05/2023 20:22

ChrisPPancake · 07/05/2023 16:45

So you'd have not felt the need to explain if the person had just said "stop"? You wouldn't have wanted to put your view across any more?

Is that actually what you need? A hand up gesture and a "stop now"? Because if you and I were conversing, unless you'd explained that to me exactly like that as what you needed, there's absolutely no way I'd do it because I would find that rude and inappropriate.

They didn't say stop. They said, "That's rascist," and more or less ganged up on me.

OP posts:

What did you say, specifically? What was the sentence or comment that they said was racist?

Basically, I was born in Africa and described myself as African on an ethnicity form at work. I shared this in the group and was called a racist, and banned from the group.

I was trying to answer people, but the thread ran away, so I told people to look at my OP to find their answer. It's tedious repeating myself.

They had a new book to read each month, then come together to discuss our takeaway on it.

I’m really confused. What does natural tan mean? Surely everyone has a natural tan?
