To think William should have made more effort

To learn that one line pledge to his father? He read from a card looking sideways most of the way through it, and he looked like he was bored and rushing through it. Looked terrible on screen.

I know he's lazy but it wasn't too much to ask for, was it - to memorise that line and at least fake a bit of sincerity?

When did you last undertake a reading in a historic ceremony in front of millions OP. Oh thought so 🤦🏻‍♀️

CheshireCat1 · 06/05/2023 18:37

Oh dear.

pilates · 06/05/2023 18:38

My thoughts exactly!

Probably had the card because his mum got his dad's name wrong at their wedding. Safes is best and all that wink

Ha yes. Why not complain about that OP? She could have learnt the name of the man she was marrying 😁

The little lad at the beginning managed without a card

Yes, I noticed that. His parents must be proud.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 06/05/2023 18:39

They all read off cards, probably as a precaution.

It's a pledge, it's meant to be from the heart. I think William could have made more effort, it was just a few words FFS.

It's a pantomime with prompts.

PollyThePixie · 06/05/2023 18:44

OP, It was very disappointing. It’s all well and good reading off cue cards if there’s a lot to be said but what William had to say was very short and he should have been looking directly at his father, talking to him, given he was directly in front of him.

the80sweregreat · 06/05/2023 18:45

The little boy did a great job.
His parents must be so chuffed

I'm surprised that you watched it, op. Wouldn't have thought it was your thing at all.

I’m a Royalist and had a lovely day today with my daughters watching the Coronation and having some lovely food and Champagne but I agree that William reading off the cue card was disappointing.

Iwasafool · 06/05/2023 18:49

Do you remember when Charles and Diana got married? She couldn't even get his name right.

Yawn. It must be hard work being so offended by something like this.

Comedycook · 06/05/2023 17:44

Agree. Why were they all reading off cards?! Lazy, privileged useless lot.

So they get it right and it all goes smoothly????
Vicars at weddings don't memorise the whole service. It's really not an issue.

How sad to be picking faults at something so trivial.

It's just another GOADY post

Yes. And didn’t she also get the bit about worldly goods wrong also so that what she said was ‘what’s yours is mine and what’s mine is mine’. It was something along those lines. It was funny.

MayBeeJuneSoon · 06/05/2023 18:52

If they hadn't used cards and were word perfect then the mumsnet fools would be saying 'too much time on their hands, it was word perfect'

Can't win either way

The op Posted just to be goady

Agree it's not like he has anything else to do!

How do you account for the Royalists who felt disappointed by it. Are they being goody?

ferntwist · 06/05/2023 18:56

Yes! I thought exactly the same OP. He looked like he was giving side eye because he had to look at the script while he was speaking and it made the pledge of allegiance feel less genuine. But then I learned my wedding vows by heart so I could say them without the priest saying each line first.

Sunraes · 06/05/2023 18:56

It seems neither do you.

DancingWithTheMoonlitKnight · 06/05/2023 18:57

Anyone who is not forelock tugging at King Chaz and his offspring are deemed goady on MN.

MayBeeJuneSoon · 06/05/2023 18:59

@PollyThePixie not sure who the royalists are, how can I tell?

What he had to say was given to him, not chosen, and I expect under that much pressure he just wanted to get it right/over with and there wasn't a great deal of freedom/time/opportunity for soppy looks.

Real life isn't Disney, I think you've got a completely unrealistic viewpoint.

William didn't have to memorise a whole service, just a few words!

Dressing up in cloaks and crowns and wearing priceless jewels is hardly real life.
