To think William should have made more effort

To learn that one line pledge to his father? He read from a card looking sideways most of the way through it, and he looked like he was bored and rushing through it. Looked terrible on screen.

I know he's lazy but it wasn't too much to ask for, was it - to memorise that line and at least fake a bit of sincerity?

It's OK to have cue cards, of course they don't want anything to go wrong at any moment. But W literally just read off them, rather than look the king in the eye and say his pledge with sincerity, keeping the cards as a back up. He's had months to learn one simple line! Lazy.

W & K are known for being lazy though, even the Queen (QE2) said it.

So now you're changing your tune, it's okay to have cue cards but he should have been more puss-in-boots about it?

Today could mumsnet get any lower?

Or more ridiculous and nit-picky.

Comedycook · 06/05/2023 18:09

He had plenty of time to learn the one sentence off by heart.

Hi Megan😂

no, i'm saying the cue cards are there as a backup. W should not have looked sideways and read off them completely, they're supposed to be just there as a prompt. He looked stupid doing so.

He had plenty of time to learn the one sentence off by heart.

Why should he have an added layer of stress when cue cards exist?!

You're being just as goady on other threads.

GoodChat · 06/05/2023 18:12

They have to recite it word-perfectly. If they don't, it's wrong, in front of the world. Then what do you do?

It's his job. He could have had cue cards as a back up. But he looked at them throughout.

What threads am I being goady on? Who made you the thread police. It's not quite North Korea just yet...I am allowed an opinion

PollyPeptide · 06/05/2023 18:14

I'm sure he did learn it off by heart. But clearly he was very nervous and wanted to make sure he got it right. If you ever have to say a line in front of 100s of millions of people, we'll cut you some slack too.
You don't like him. Nothing he did would be good enough in your eyes.

I disagree, I thought it was quite a sweet moment.

Sounds like you think that everyone except William should have had cue cards.

Ridiculous.

Then he will be carted off to the tower.

Deadpalm · 06/05/2023 18:17

If you google cue cards coronation it tells you easily what newspaper OP is reading 😁

Considering everyone read from them I would simply assume protocol to ensure all wording was correct under the pressure.

InSpainTheRain · 06/05/2023 18:17

In something that will go down in history forever and was being televised to millions I'd read from a card too given the option!

Greywhippet · 06/05/2023 18:18

People have a very very weird concept of what constitutes ‘stress’ and ‘pressure’

KingSatsuma · 06/05/2023 18:18

F*ck me.

They all looked terrified, and emotional. Charles looked overwhelmed with it. He’s a very sensitive man and probably feels the full force of what he was becoming, and William there in the middle of it, getting a taste of what’s coming his way, whilst his son looked on.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

I’m not really that much of a royalist but honestly, some of you are embarrassingly unpatriotic. Such self National loathing must be so tiresome.

summerpoolandsun · 06/05/2023 18:18

They all looked really nervous

GreenWheat · 06/05/2023 18:18

michaelmacrae · 06/05/2023 17:46

It's a pledge, it's meant to be from the heart. I think William could have made more effort, it was just a few words FFS.

Don't be ridiculous. It isn't "from the heart", it's very specific official wording. William didn't write it himself you know.

GreenWheat · 06/05/2023 18:19

Given the number of people on MN today picking apart every tiny detail, I'm not surprised they used cards.

Mrsjayy · 06/05/2023 18:19

The king also had cards the late queen always read from cardz They don't want it going wrong so prince William read from a card. Meh

Not sure if you understand what cue cards are for, for they are intended to be looked at 😂

Mrsjayy · 06/05/2023 18:19

Cards*

Comedycook · 06/05/2023 18:19

If they're nervous then they're in the wrong job

I thought exactly the same. Ditto the shorter bits that the archbishop was saying.

When you @michaelmacrae are on TV watched by hundreds of millions of people, you can feel free to make more effort. 👍🏼
