To think William should have made more effort

To learn that one line pledge to his father? He read from a card looking sideways most of the way through it, and he looked like he was bored and rushing through it. Looked terrible on screen.

I know he's lazy but it wasn't too much to ask for, was it - to memorise that line and at least fake a bit of sincerity?

They're there by birth right, what makes you think that making an effort would be a part of it.

Yes, I noticed that. His parents must be proud.

He was a child so took the preparation seriously.

GoodChat · 06/05/2023 19:03

William didn't have to memorise a whole service, just a few words!

Well he didn't have to do that either, or you'd have no thread Wink

WeAreTheHeroes · 06/05/2023 19:05

Oh get a life OP. Fwiw it was a touching moment between father and son when he kissed him.

You'll be saying Penny Mordaunt should have done a tap dance instead of just standing there stock still next.

I felt so sorry for her having to hold that massive sword for so long. Think she had the hardest job of the day!

This is very true.

It's a pledge, it's meant to be from the heart. I think William could have made more effort, it was just a few words FFS.

People don’t even memorise their wedding vows. They repeat them.

True. Why do I expect more from these people, that we pay for? Silly me!

I'm sure that's a very reliable, unbiased report. 😂😂😂

Of course it’s reliable. Their job is to make the case for a republic, using lies would go against them, they can’t get away with making things up like the UK MSM do. But you just stay on your knees believing and doing what you’re told.

Lazy? Are you serious? He is one of the hardest working Royals.

Oh god how much work do regular "toffs" do in their gap years. Christ almighty he is 40 years old!

Regular toffs earn their own money, they don’t scrounge.

Dressing up in cloaks and crowns and wearing priceless jewels is hardly real life.

You forgot “stolen” in between priceless and jewels.

I think it’s fairly standard practice, priest read things that they say multiple times every week. It makes sure the wording is exactly right.

I don’t think he looked bored at all, I could feel and see the emotion between father and son, king and prince. I found it incredibly moving, to think the centuries that had seen this ceremony played out repeatedly with the same words I think is incredibly powerful. Loved it and made me so proud to be British,

putalidonit · 06/05/2023 19:19

GeraltsBathtub · 06/05/2023 17:40

Looked fine to me. I’d want to have it there too regardless of how much I had practiced - imagine getting it wrong or stumbling from nerves! If there’s anyone who was reading something they should have had memorised, it was the Archbishop reading holy communion!

Yet the little chorister at the beginning managed to learn his part of by heart. Yeah OP. Will was rubbish.

michaelmacrae · 06/05/2023 19:21

GreenWheat · 06/05/2023 18:18

Don't be ridiculous. It isn't "from the heart", it's very specific official wording. William didn't write it himself you know.

So the pledge of allegiance does not need to be "from the heart" or show any sincerity, it should just be a bland reading of official words in a bored voice written yonks ago? Therefore a "pledge" is meaningless. Seriously?

OP posts:
DancingWithTheMoonlitKnight · 06/05/2023 19:22

None of it was sincere really. Just a big show of wealth and privilege.

If you don’t understand the point of all the ritual you’re probably better off watching cats falling off sofas on tik tok, might be more your thing.

Great post and totally agree@OMG12
So fed up of the negativity and hate from some posters.

Ah so you're looking for a Disney-esque spectacle? Completely unrealistic.

It’s clear that there has been a concerted (prob organised) effort by Republicans to flood Mumsnet today with negativity, they get pissed off every time millions show how much they love the pageantry, ritual and tradition. I just assume that they don’t understand what it’s all about. If it’s not for them - fine, but they are not going to affects the constitution lol. They’re just a bunch of people who’s thought processes never left the 6th form common room. I say good luck to them being miserable.,they’re pretty powerless in the great scheme of things. It’s like they think the president of the United States is really cheap to sustain😂

Ireolu · 06/05/2023 19:29

I'm with you OP, it looked off to be and like he couldn't be arsed but that's just my very unimportant personal opinion.

mostlysunnywithshowers · 06/05/2023 19:30

Oh my. Of all the things to remember from today and you are focused on whether someone read an important line from a card? How was your oath? Did you say it correcty? And how is your bunting? Is it ironed and hung at the right angle? And what about your quiche? Is it browned and set but not hard in the middle? Perhaps focus on the bigger picture a little and have some fun once in a while?
