To think Camilla should not have been crowned Queen

Viviennemary · 06/05/2023 16:38

She should have been Princess Consort as we were told she would be. Instead the usual airbrushing of history to try and make her acceptable by clever spinning. And positive press. Bit sickening since Edward VIII had to abdicate over marrying a divorced woman.

She should have remained Camilla Queen Consort.

That is what The Queen EII specifically requested latterly. Not princess consort, or Queen.

Camilla and Queen in 2014

Queen backs Camilla to be Queen Consort on Jubilee

Marking 70 years as monarch, the Queen says Camilla should have the title when Charles becomes King.

Charles is a widower so is free to marry in the eyes of the church. Camilla isn't.

You're religious too are you OP?! 😂

ScribblingPixie · 06/05/2023 17:25

In the 1930s the Church of England didn't allow remarriage for divorcees so marriage to Wallis Simson would have been incompatible with the king's role as defender of the faith.

Rooroobear · 06/05/2023 17:25

He’s not a widower…..Diana died after they were divorced! Fgs she’s the queen end of….get over it

whumpthereitis · 06/05/2023 17:26

Brumbies · 06/05/2023 17:23

She's not my queen that's for sure. And I think it was wrong to make her such a thing.

If you’re a British citizen she is though, whether you consent to that or not. That’s how monarchy works.

IncompleteSenten · 06/05/2023 17:27

Royal families throughout history have all been rabid shaggers with illegitimate children all over the place. I don't think there's any point getting all pearl clutchy about it. It's a different world and they don't give a shit what us plebs think anyway.

BarelyLiterate · 06/05/2023 17:27

The level of historical ignorance on MN is baffling.
Camilla is the Queen because she is the wife of the King, in exactly the same way that Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother), or Queen Mary or Anne Boleyn were in their day. There is literally nothing unusual about this. It’s how it has always been in Britain since the Middle Ages. Why do some people apparently find this difficult to understand?

Shhhquirrel · 06/05/2023 17:27

Thankfully times have changed OP. The 1930’s are calling, they want you back 🙄

Mariposa123 · 06/05/2023 17:28

So if anything happened to the waleses and Harry was crowned king, you’d presumably have the same complaint about Meghan being queen too, right?

BeReet · 06/05/2023 17:28

Sloop89 · 06/05/2023 17:09

She's great. They clearly love each other support each other. It was lovely to see their blended family on the balcony.

This. I think Camilla is fabulous

DdraigGoch · 06/05/2023 17:28

For goodness sake, it's been more than 25 years and the St Diana Fanclub are still complaining. Move on!

itsgettingweird · 06/05/2023 17:28

Viviennemary · 06/05/2023 16:45

Its not only the fact she is divorced. She was Charles's mistress for many years. Never gave his marriage a chance. Lets whotewash all that.

Unless you are 1 of the 3 people involved in that you have no idea what actually went on.

You've just chosen to believe the narrative you want to.

loislovesstewie · 06/05/2023 17:29

The wife of a king is a queen. She is queen consort to differentiate queen consort from queen regnant in other words a queen in her own right. Men who marry a queen regnant do not become king as that takes precedence over a queen. Unless we have the situation of William and Mary who reigned together.
So, that is the situation, now can we just get on with it.

Irritateandunreasonable · 06/05/2023 17:29

@Inkpotlover I didn’t read this as her worth as a woman.

I read this as the start of a debate about if it is time or not to start breaking with traditions and a discussion about the corrupt family who break the rules when it suits them and not when it doesn’t.

FancyFanny · 06/05/2023 17:29

I think Camilla is great- she obviously makes Charles happy and she really has played the long game here to be queen and thoroughly deserves the title.

Charles is a widower so is free to marry in the eyes of the church. Camilla isn't.

A) No he isn't. Diana was not his wife when she died.

B) Are you aware of how the Church of England came about? And you think it's incompatible with remarrying while your ex still lives?

C) If the Archbishop of Canterbury doesn't see the problem, I think you can assume it's fine by the Church.

DustyLee123 · 06/05/2023 17:30

I seem to remember that it said on Charles’ website that she wouldn’t be, then that was removed.
‘I seem to remember him saying there wouldn’t be a bank holiday either.

He was a divorcee first 🙄

I find it so interesting that instead of an interesting discussion, PPs immediately resorted to unintelligent, angry insults.

This site can be so boring. Where are the people with a brain?

Hang on, how do you manage to claim to be "so interested" and "so bored" with the same thing in the same post?

Seems to me there is plenty of interesting, intelligent discussion in this thread, though OP doesn't really seem to be that keen to come back to explain her views.

Callixte · 06/05/2023 17:32

Now that the succession is chronological and no longer discriminates based on sex, the titles for the monarch's spouse should be equalised: either (e.g.) Prince Philip > Princess Camilla or King Philip > Queen Camilla. But you can't pick and choose among individuals and change the rules each time. Just as it's not possible to say Charles: no, Andrew: no, Anne or Edward: hmmm... yes we also can't say Philip OK, Diana OK, Camilla not OK, Kate OK, Meghan not OK, etc. The monarch's the monarch, the monarch's spouse is the monarch's spouse. If you want to pick people, don't have a monarchy.

chocolateandvanillaicecream · 06/05/2023 17:32

It's got absolutely nothing to do with you

Sunnysunbun · 06/05/2023 17:33

It’s not the 1930’s

AnnesObstructiveFeather · 06/05/2023 17:35

She is queen consort to differentiate queen consort from queen regnant in other words a queen in her own right.

She is. But the Queen specifically asked that Camilla’s title remain ‘Queen Consort’ rather than Queen. A typically diplomatic and wise suggestion.

CabernetSauvignon · 06/05/2023 17:36

AnnesObstructiveFeather · 06/05/2023 17:25

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-60274816

The Queen Consort is the Queen. Always has been. Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother were all Queen Consort. A fact that Queen Elizabeth II obviously knew perfectly well - she was simply saying that she wanted Camilla to be Queen Consort (and therefore Queen) rather than Princess Consort.

Mamansparkles · 06/05/2023 17:36

'In the eyes of the church'.
Wrong church OP. It's the Catholics that don't allow divorce and remarriage.
Monarch is (literally the Head of) Church of England.
