To not understand why anyone would not watch the Coronation?

OK, I get that you are an edgy republican, but are you not a little bit nosy?
And if you really don't care, why are you on every Coronation thread telling everyone you don't care? Why would you not just ignore them, as you don't care?
I personally have no time for the Royal family and think they should be abolished completely, but I can't imagine not watching such a big thing for the whole country, in the same way I watched the euro Cup final even though I could not name any of the players as I have no interest in football.
Why wouldn't you?

I watched but my dh was not remotely interested. He has as a long list of diy jobs so got on with them instead

Anskl · 06/05/2023 15:18

Have I missed it? I thought it was on Monday.

Lorrymum · 06/05/2023 15:18

Each to their own.
I watched because I enjoy the pageantry, sense of history and the sheer enjoyment of the crowds.
If it's a badge if honour not to have watched then I won't be wearing one.

MacarenaMacarena · 06/05/2023 15:20

We've had no choice regarding having to pay for it, it's monopolising my beloved radio 4, definitely not interested in wasting my time having to watch it on TV or join forelock-tugging, deferential monarchists have a silly tea party.
You do what you like, but for many of us, in a cost of living crisis with rampant poverty and homelessness, this is all a step too far.

pigsDOfly · 06/05/2023 15:22

What's to understand about some people not wanting to watch it?

I'm sure all the participants are having a lovely time but watching all that puffed up vanity is not for me. I'm not interested.

That doesn't make me ignorant, as a pp claims. The historical aspect of the whole thing is the fact that he is now the king; I don't need to see all the boring details to be aware that history has been made.

Politically, I'm pretty clued up, but the royals have no impact on my life, apart from having to pay towards their luxurious lifestyle that is, and that's enough input from me. I don't want to have to watch them on television as well.

And no I don't watch football matches either for the same reason, I'm not interested.

Duhduhdub · 06/05/2023 15:27

Couldn’t be any less interested. Didn’t watch the Jubliee or the Queens funeral either.
Same as I don’t watch other things on the tv that don’t interest me.

daisymoonlight · 06/05/2023 15:28

I only saw 3 minutes of it and thought it was ridiculously silly. Touch this bejewelled sword, then give it back, touch these gold bracelets, then give them back, put this gold coat on, touch this, touch that etc It was honestly like watching a satirical comedy sketch.

I went to Marks and Spencers and did some food shopping instead- it was gloriously quiet with no queues at all so no, I am not sad I missed it.

SocksAndTheCity · 06/05/2023 15:29

I've been to the beach and had fish and chips instead 😀

Which is the same as saying I’ve no interest in history. Plenty of historical things occur I don’t agree with, but I listen watch and learn. Because it’s not about it I’m interested or not, it’s about watching history in the making.

Not really. There’s a lot of history, and not being interested in particular aspects does not preclude one from having an interest in history.

I personally don’t see it as an event of particular historical importance (‘monarch gets crowned in 21st century UK’. Okay), and…I don’t care. That’s it, really. I don’t consider it an edgy statement to make, and I don’t expect anyone to care that I’m not watching it, any more than I care that people are.

ineedalifetbh · 06/05/2023 15:32

I don’t care for it and I have a baby to look after instead of watching TV 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes, I find the ritualistic elements really fucking weird. The stone of destiny and all that. A friend said it was like something out of Game of Thrones and I think that’s why I struggle to take any of it seriously. It sort of reminds me of small children making up their own fairy story game.

DanceMonster · 06/05/2023 15:34

Ginnybaby · 06/05/2023 14:42

It’s really not. It’s been seven decades from the last coronation. Most people have not seen one on their life time, it’s not like rangers playing Celtic. The fact you think it is, says everything about you that you don’t want said.

What have you learned from watching the coronation today @Ginnybaby ?

Londre · 06/05/2023 15:34

I’m currently on holiday and woke up after it finished. I planned this trip to avoid watching! I saw a few stories about it but was more interested in the local election results in my area tbf.

RampantIvy · 06/05/2023 15:35

And if you really don't care, why are you on every Coronation thread telling everyone you don't care?

It doesnt make sense.

However, I can understand why people aren't interested.

Upallnightfeeding · 06/05/2023 15:35

I was at work/ don’t care. Plus it will be repeated on news etc to death so I’m sure I will be aware of what happens whether I like it or not!

JassyRadlett · 06/05/2023 15:35

And he's been king since last September; the coronation has no legal significance (though it has one legal requirement in the Coronation Oath). It's a religious/ceremonial (hard to separate the two with our monarchy) event, not a constitutional one.

I wonder whether the posters like @Ginnybaby who feel it's ignorant not to witness 'history in the making' stay up to watch election and referendum results and the like?

MrsMontyD · 06/05/2023 15:37

Major Johnny Thompson in a kilt.

Hummusanddipdip · 06/05/2023 13:56

I don't have a TV licence, so can't legally watch it.

I mean we might've chosen to watch it if we had a licence, but I won't pay for one, so we can't...

I don’t have a TV licence either, because there are maybe one or two times a year when I’d actually make use of it so no point.

Sausagis · 06/05/2023 15:40

I'll catch the next one...

Begsthequestion · 06/05/2023 15:40

I'm watching bits of it like Attenborough might watch animals, because I'm trying to understand the rituals of these strange creatures and their archaic ways.

I mostly find it revolting and so can only manage in small doses.

Mojoj · 06/05/2023 15:41

Because you don't give a flying fuck???

Mytholmroyd · 06/05/2023 15:41

Yes - he's been quite the hit today! 😍

Yes! This exactly. Society was so different 70 years ago but now, the whole pomp and ritual just seems really incongruous and out of touch with how life actually is today. I feel like they could have added literally anything into that ceremony as a joke (eg. a gold pantomime horse running up the aisle) and people would have just nodded sagely along as if it was completely expected. The whole thing was weird AF.

0021andabit · 06/05/2023 15:44

I guess the main reason to not watch it, is it’s boring. And the commentary is sycophantic and patronising. History happens all around us & not just to Kings & Queens. I also don’t know how much it’s really history, not really, Charles being king won’t change the course of the world the way other events unfurling around us all the time might…

Modaboutyou · 06/05/2023 15:44

I'm not an 'edgy' republican, I'm just a republican. Absolutely no interest, I'm not even remotely curious. I hear people saying it's historic but I don't fully get why. I know this is most people's first coronation but realistically there will be another one soon (within most people's lifetime) another king. Then another king.
