To not understand why anyone would not watch the Coronation?

OK, I get that you are an edgy republican, but are you not a little bit nosy?
And if you really don't care, why are you on every Coronation thread telling everyone you don't care? Why would you not just ignore them, as you don't care?
I personally have no time for the Royal family and think they should be abolished completely, but I can't imagine not watching such a big thing for the whole country, in the same way I watched the euro Cup final even though I could not name any of the players as I have no interest in football.
Why wouldn't you?

Pottered round the garden, read the Yorkshire Post, made pancakes - too busy to watch it.

But seriously, I was very proud of the immaculate servicemen and women at the Queens funeral but my interest in the monarchy is entirely historical and ended with her. No interest in Charles or any of the others. I MIGHT have watched it if it had been Anne.

Annonymousse22 · 06/05/2023 14:50

We were at my child’s gymnastics class and food shopping. I honestly had no idea what time it was even happening and we don’t have TV anyways just streaming services 🤷‍♀️

There is a level of ignorance here, there is no arguing with, if you think Charles being coronated isn’t of historical significance then you do you.

*crowned.

Hope that helps with the ignorance.

Can you explain the historical significance of the coronation? What changes as a result of it?

Bonus points if you can do it civilly and without resorting to insults. It's usually more convincing if arguments are meant with other reasoned arguments rather than ad hom attacks.

RedVanYellowVan · 06/05/2023 14:52

I wasn't expecting to have so little to do today that I needed to buy a TV and TV licence to keep boredom at bay.

This week's Private Eye front cover says all I need to know about Mr Windsor's big day out:

MAN IN HAT SITS ON CHAIR

ModestMoon · 06/05/2023 14:52

Being a republication isn't edgy, it's a normal and pretty mainstream political opinion. It's the standard opinion of many people outside of the UK. I'm not watching because I'm not interested. I don't watch things I don't care about. It's the same reason I don't want the rugby, the cricket or the great British bake off. Why is this confusing to you?

I can't help but imagine an alternate reality where Anne or perhaps Charlotte were in line for the throne. I feel like people might have a bit more interest!

Which is the same as saying I’ve no interest in history. Plenty of historical things occur I don’t agree with, but I listen watch and learn. Because it’s not about it I’m interested or not, it’s about watching history in the making.

Really?! I have no interest in the Royal Family. They perform no function apart from opening a hospital or a figurehead for a charity. So you watch your history and I'll do my own thing.

I'm an edgy republican😁 I'm a citizen not a subject.

And this citizen had piles of washing and gardening to do. Much more important.

As for being historic, don't worry there will be another one along in about 10 years time. Although we might not have finished paying for this one by then, so Wills may have to do with the Methodist Church and a bouncy castle

soberfabulous · 06/05/2023 14:54

Genuinely zero interest. I played tennis during!

Elphame · 06/05/2023 14:55

Utterly no interest in them.

They are totally irrelevant to my life other than I'm paying for them of course

Exhausteddog · 06/05/2023 14:55

I put it on, Coincidentally as they were about to put the crown on his head. Watched about 10 min, then turned off because i didn't find it very interesting. In the modern era all this will be available to watch later if I had a moment of regret and decided I wanted to sit through hours of it at a later date! It will be on the news anyway.

KimberleyClark · 06/05/2023 14:55

I watched it even though I am not a royalist. Tbh I quite enjoyed it.

There are plenty of things I don’t have an interest in. I don’t click on threads, read them. And announce I’ve no interest, why would I, I’ve no interest.

and yet, here you are…

electriclight · 06/05/2023 14:56

I'm glad we have a royal family and quite like Charles, William and Kate. But I had no interest in watching the coronation. I knew it would be long and tedious, and that the highlights would be on the news. I had it on for a random ten minutes and enjoyed the singing. I went shopping because I thought the shops would be quiet but they weren't really.

tothelefttotheleft · 06/05/2023 14:57

@Ginnybaby

Someone asked the question. Why do you think people shouldn't answer it?

LlynTegid · 06/05/2023 14:57

Highlights on the news programmes later today. Youtube and other streaming services with highlights. Sunday papers if you get one.

You could satisfy your nosiness in many other ways, and do other things.

electriclight · 06/05/2023 14:57

But I haven't announced my apathy to anyone!

Juiceboxxy · 06/05/2023 14:57

Don't hate him, in fact grew to respect his mother, but whilst I'm using a food bank, he's riding around in a gold carriage. Not his fault. But id rather sleep. He has.hos coronation regardless of whether I watched it, makes zero impact on me.

ColdHandsHotHead · 06/05/2023 14:57

I started watching because I thought it would be interesting. It wasn't. I was bored stiff and wandered off to make toast.

The protocols around the Queen's death were far more interesting.

User6280654 · 06/05/2023 14:58

I'm on a round the world trip at the moment so haven't time

electriclight · 06/05/2023 14:59

"There are plenty of things I don’t have an interest in. I don’t click on threads, read them. And announce I’ve no interest, why would I, I’ve no interest.

Hang on, op's thread title invites answers from both camps.

ActDottie · 06/05/2023 14:59

You’re pretty narrow minded to not understand why someone doesn’t want to watch it. We went out for lunch and it was lovely and quiet!

No, my lovely, that's not how this works. You've made an assertion - the coronation has historical significance, and anyone who thinks otherwise is ignorant. It's up to you to back that argument up.

What is the historical significance of the coronation, as separate from the accession? How is today's event, and the way it was conducted, likely to alter the future?

I've done you the courtesy of laying out my thinking, including that there may be perspectives of what's 'historic' - such as things that happen rarely - that may allow this to qualify (though I still think 'history in the making' is drawing quite a long bow; I wonder how many can recount details of Edward VII's coronation, or the impacts it had? Similar historical context.)

If you can't mount an argument to back your own assertion, it's likely that people will draw their own conclusions about where the ignorance lies.
