@polkadotdalmation the people arrested were republicans.

Viviennemary · 09/05/2023 13:07

I think protest **posters and booing are fine. But not egg throwing and setting off alarms.

Which is something the protestors from the organised Republican movement have never done.

Now... you can have a member of the public sympathetic to 'Not my King chucking an egg (which happened to Charles) but that is not someone who is signed up to an organised protest by 'republic'.

NeverMyKing · 09/05/2023 13:08

@polkadotdalmation the people arrested were republicans.

Many were from Just Stop Oil.

NeverMyKing · 09/05/2023 13:19

@Viviennemary the official republic protests have always been very clear that their protests will not involve locking on, getting in the way of people or throwing anything. They can’t be held liable for others’ behaviour.

NeverMyKing · 09/05/2023 13:20

@polkadotdalmation not the 6 arrested at 7am on Saturday before they’d even unloaded their van. They were all Republic protestors.

DuncinToffee · 09/05/2023 13:20

So being part of Stop Oil warrants arrest without charge?

Fladdermus · 09/05/2023 13:21

I went back to work today (not UK) and this is what everyone wanted to ask me about. How could something like this be allowed to happen in Great Britain? People were really shocked by it.

Yes, some ignorant people don't seem to realise throwing eggs is an assault. If someone said to me, I don't like the fact you support the labour party and wanted to start a discussion, fine. If they threw an egg at me, not fine and I'd call the police. You can't break the law because you feel you have a right to. The laws are for the greater good, not just the individual.

I'd regard a van load of heavy wooden signs as potentially offensive weapons! I'd also be pissed off if I had some dickhead screaming through a megaphone and blocking my view in front of me.

We live in a democracy. Fuck off and vote. Set up a republican party. Don't intimidate other people. I would find a bunch of screaming fanatics intimidating.

Nobody was throwing eggs. The guy who did throw an egg on a previous occassiion was picked up and searched and the let go again.

If we take the logic of intelligence based policing and maybe a desire to frustrate the demo at face value to prevent embarrassment to the King, well then it spectacularly failed. They surely must have had an idea of how many would be coming to protest (thousands) but couldn't arrest them all without mass disorder. So they arrest the leaders to deter the others without any grounds to do so which it palpably failed to do, and a leaderless protest is more dangerous than a controlled one which had agreed in advance.

LBC has talked about little else ever since and Republic has grown wings and flies. When I was goaded into donating on hearing about the arrests the crowdfunding was around £51,000 - just checked it now nearly £76k. Twitter followers at the same time in the low 50s now nearly 90k. With support coming from many quarters expressing outrage over the arrests not just those with a traditional Republican bent.

Sigh.

It was agreed by the Police Liaison Committe over months where they would stand, not blocking anyone's view. They aren't screaming fanatics despite some trying to say that. If they were, they would've been charged as opposed to the Met having to do a huge climb down and send the Chief Inspector plus two high ranking officers to the home of the CEO of Republic to apologise.

They aren't fucking off any time soon, sorry to disappoint.

I agree with you.

I have joined before but just for a year (I don't like rolling over memberships as I forget about them!). And I have just joined again in the interests of free speech for all.
And because the Police literally imprisoned them under false arrest and have had to apologise.
And because it's 'Republic'. Not that I agree with everything they say but pressure on the Monarchy to slim down and be answerable is a very good thing.

NeverMyKing · 09/05/2023 13:51

@polkadotdalmation ”we live in a democracy”! Fuck me you don’t even see the irony of that statement.

The POLICE approved the placards. Just fyi.

I've had 2 conference calls so far today with people in Portugal and the US.

At the beginning of each I was asked about the draconian, unwarranted arrests.

I really didn't think anyone would even notice. It's certainly created a lot of interest and concern.

You could be describing the royal supporters

As for democracy, the irony Confused

countrygirl99 · 09/05/2023 14:18

It's quite clear that some people think democracy is only for people who they agree with. People like that scare me a lot more than someone gluing themselves to a road.

Roussette · 09/05/2023 14:22

Yes! Everyone has the right to freedom of expression and hold opinions and share them with others, without the State interfering... unless it's on Coronation Day. Or Royal walkabout Day. Or a Royal wedding day. Or, in fact, anything to do with the Monarchy.

Rowley defends Met officers

On the Republic 6 arrests
Having now reviewed the evidence and potential lines of enquiry we do not judge that we will be able to prove criminal intent beyond all reasonable doubt.

And this
“I am immensely grateful to them {his officers} that I am not currently trying to explain why we failed to prevent the perfect Coronation celebration being significantly disrupted or injury or harm to people witnessed on the world stage.”

Sir Mark Rowley defends Met officers who protected King’s historic Coronation

Protest is an important right in any democracy, but it is limited and has to be carefully balanced

NeverMyKing · 09/05/2023 15:08

Republic make a very deliberate point of not protesting weddings as they’re an irrelevant event as far as they’re concerned. The crowning of a new head of state with no election is a VERY political event!

NeverMyKing · 09/05/2023 15:09

“Beyond all reasonable doubt” disgraceful - they can’t prove it at all 🤬
