That will annoy the Daily Mail

Wow, this thread has reminded me that a scarily large % of Mumsnetters would probably welcome a slide down the slippery slope of fascism.

I can only hope that the Met's latest disgusting actions will contribute to more anti-monarchist feeling and turn yet more people against the police as well.

IClaudine · 08/05/2023 09:07

Now they are arresting journalists. Scary, scary stuff.

Does the right to protest include men carrying rape alarms ready to sound them off when military are around with horses and thousands of people? Sounding rape alarms would spook the horses who bolt and run, people get hurt - perhaps the police want to prevent people getting hurt? The military had mentioned to police their concerns.

Are thousands of people not allowed to enjoy what they want to enjoy without a couple hundred people shouting and some about the sound rape alarms. I mean let the few spoil things for the ones enjoying themselves.

I tend to let people enjoy themselves and went I don't wish to go to something I don't rather than spoil for others. Toddlers stamping feet, and sounding rape alarms?

LadyWithLapdog · 08/05/2023 09:43

@changednametorespond what are you on about rape alarms? When has this “don’t frighten the horses” become such a thing? I mean, have you seen the supporters attending? If that didn’t frighten the horses, I doubt a couple of yellow tabards will.

IClaudine · 08/05/2023 09:43

Those arrested for having rape alarms were part of Westminster Council’s night life safety team.

The Met arrest people for having rape alarms. What a shame they aren't as diligent when it comes to arresting actual rapists.

Anyone who thinks any of this is OK is lacking in intelligence.

cakeorwine · 08/05/2023 09:53

Imagine if that when there was a country when someone was unelected to become Head of State, the supporters of this person all lined the streets as the new Head of State drove down to have an official ceremony to make them Head of State - and people who disagreed with this process was arrested before they got to the spot under a new law that had been rushed through a few days before - and signed by the unelected Head of State.

I wonder how people would react to that?

So rape alarms startle horses but hundreds of bugles, trombones, trumpets, drums and symbols are all fine? How's that then?

What you mentioned actually happened, the horses were spooked by the loud military music, other horses and the cheering of the crowds. The most logical argument in these circumstances is to replace the horses and some horse lovers on other threads said that many exhibit sign of distress and have a metal bit in their mouth which is pulled tight to control them.

While beating a horse with a whip is considered animal abuse by those with common sense, it’s the other obligate tool of the racing industry, the bit, that delivers the most harmful blows of all.

What is the bit?

Designed to control horses by applying pressure in the mouth, the bit is a metal device held in place in a horse’s mouth via a bridle then attached to the reins or a lead. The bit is forced against areas of the horse’s mouth that are known to have an extremely high density of sensory receptors, via a rider’s pressure through the rein. The only possible experience for a horse of this pressure from the bit in its mouth is pain.

Each horse is trained for between eight to 10 months at the Household Cavalry Training Wing in Windsor and Hyde Park Barracks in London, which involves the horses being regularly ridden on the streets of the capital to desensitize them to loud noises and heavy traffic.

In addition, special training is given for the horses to be used to noises, like the gun salutes and regimental bands, and they need to be comfortable in a procession, with noises coming from behind them.

They really do think we are all thick, don't they? The queen was fired at six times during the trooping of the colour. None of the horses became uncontrollable.

Precisely. The brainstorming session at the Met when they said what spurious grounds can we aim at the reasonable protestors to justify our actions.

Well Sarge - rape alarms ....
What !!!?
Hear me out - they could frighten the horses.
Nice one son, you will go far.

At some point this rape alarm trope was seeded into the national conversation and seems to have quickly become fact, seeded as ever by the Daily Mail into a 'vile plot'.

Extremists' vile plot to spook King's horses with rape alarms

Concerns have been raised at the highest level of Government that the stunt could lead to serious injuries or even deaths if spooked horses bolt into the crowds lining the route.

Don't attempt to bring common sense into it, Fladdermus Wink

Apparently it's the same with placards, which seem to be okay if they carry a ruddy great image of Charles, but not if they say "Not my king"
Who knew horses could read now?? Confused

My god there are so many sheep...

The whole thing is an archaic embarrassment, an inappropriate, extravagant farce when there are 14 million people in this country who cannot afford to fucking live a fucking normal life.

Wake up. And if we draw attention to this, we are arrested?!!

Joining Republic, now.

Not just MN - loads of people dismiss any criticism of the State or Police and tin foil hat territory. Because they never stop to properly consider it.

Yesterday I got arrested whilst filming a @JustStop_Oil
supporter holding a banner on the pavement near the coronation route. I'm a filmmaker and had my@BECTU press accreditation visible around my neck. Police deemed this to be "conspiracy to commit a public nuisance".

See this is what I hate, the assumption that people who don't mind the RF are sheep, ignorant or not enlightened when that's not the case. Its also not a radical view that people dislike them, plenty do, some people can't hack that people are entitled to form their own opinions. Its become really prevalent the past couple of years- people are not permitted to have different views, that's just a scary precedent to me as the restrictions on protest.

Really? Plenty of people are (rightly) critical of the police and the state, i don't recognise this at all that everyone thinks they're all fine and dandy. I do know people who find the extreme hyperbole ridiculous though, can't blame them for that.
